  • I visited "Autumn at Oz" in the fall of 2014. The Land of Oz is an "abandoned" theme park perched in Beech Mountain, North Carolina, and it opens every October to welcome guests and returning cast and crew members. This film consists of my own clips and photographs and archival footage from the State Archives of North Carolina. I recommend visiting if you're interested. It was a great experience.
    UPDATE: Thank you all for the overwhelming response, and I hope you enjoyed this peek into what I felt like was another world. To clarify, the theme park is not "abandoned" in the urbex sense of the word. I initially filmed this location with a team as a part of an academic project, and we explored the duality of the park: what you see now vs. the one you see in the archival footage. In many ways, the park is "abandoned," as we perceived it as a shadow of its former self. It fell from national prominence to a mere side note, but it has gained more attention in recent years from internet exposure. We were interested in the sudden uptick of interest in the park, interest that had not existed to the same extent in previous years. I did state and explain in the video and description that the park is still maintained and opened yearly (as of now, it opens twice a year and private tours are offered), and I will repeat: no one should visit the premises without permission. "Abandoned" is not simply a click-bait term, but one that I felt properly captured the essence of the site. The park has significantly transformed from what it once was, but I do recommend a visit if you're up for it. You can book at www.landofoznc..... Thanks again for watching, and stay tuned for some more spooky exploration in the coming months. -AS 8/11/17

      Well, it was actually a political statement with the backing of our American paper money in silver rather than gold. The ruby slippers were not originally ruby either - they just translated better onto the big screen in this color. Lots of fabulous books and articles online about the real background of L. Frank Baum's 'story' to his children, that ended up as a book and then a series ^_^.

    Hello! Being a life-long Oz fan, and thanks to the good graces of the property owners, I was fortunate enough to visit the Land of Oz theme park by myself (with not another soul around except my Doberman dog) in the summer of 2010. It was quite an experience and I felt like I was walking on hallowed ground. Knowing what had transpired throughout the park's history made it a very humbling experience and one which I shall never forget. I have a number of "then and now" pictures of the grounds and I hope to get back again someday. Too many people forget that The Land of Oz is based on a book (a series of books actually) which predates the popular movie by four decades. It's a shame that more of its origins are not paid homage with this wonderful place. But it IS still wonderful! I wish that more of the 1970 layout still existed there.

      I'maCrazy they are one of the real pairs. There was one pair of "close up" slippers which had a normal sole, the other pairs were for Judy to walk and dance in and those pairs had the orange felt on the bottom which is clearly visible in the video here. I've seen one of the "dancing pairs" at the 'Hollywood Costume' exhibition at the V&A in London and it was amazing. They also had Judy's costume there. It was actually incredible to stand in front of them both.

      It's not just a motion picture Judy garland the star was getting used and abused on set having to smoke 80 cigarettes a day at only 16 she had to take pills to make her work longer hours and the men in the film thought she was stealing the lime light and hated it. Her mum made sure she stuck to her diet of a bowl of soup because as long as she's skinny the money's coming in,her only friend was the woman who played the witch they became best friends ... things are so much different too when it was filmed in WWII so it's not just a kids film it's timeless and won't be forgotten

      It's open for certain events throughout the year. It's 100% monitored and maintained when not open! Every year there's an event called Autumn in Oz where you can meet the characters and follow their journey. My friends play the Scarecrow, Lion and Miss Gulch, so I can definitely confirm that it's not abandoned. Videos like this unfortunately perpetuate the myth that it is, which has lead to a lot of vandalism in the past few years. (Not to say the video isn't well made... but calling it "Land of Oz Abandoned Theme Park Visit" really doesn't help the park at all.)

      cat lover meow meow on the surface it’s not really “scary” but the behind the scenes stuff that was going on caused the entire film to have a darker tone to it that is apparent in the film. It’s almost as if the whole energy of the project was affected. I find the movie creepy and disturbing. It always unnerved me, even before I knew about what was going on behind the scenes.

    I vaguely remember a subsequent book called "Ozma of Oz" which was definitely scary. She had a closet of heads (all belonging to her, I think) and she switched heads like people switch wigs, depending on how she wanted to look. Judy Garland, ;years later, had some really funny stories about the Munchkins; some of whom were children and some of whom were little people.

      Ozma of Oz was the 3rd book in the 14 book series! And you're thinking of Princess Langwidere, who had 31 heads that she could indeed swap like wigs. She was a suuuuper minor villain (not so much villain as she was a set-back).

      SoCal Hillbilly Judy garland the star was getting used and abused on set having to smoke 80 cigarettes a day at only 16 she had to take pills to make her work longer hours and the men in the film thought she was stealing the lime light and hated it. Her mum made sure she stuck to her diet of a bowl of soup because as long as she's skinny the money's coming in,her only friend was the woman who played the witch they became best friends ... things are so much different too when it was filmed in WWII

  • @wigwmg77
    @wigwmg77 8 лет назад +41

    It wasn't a munchkin hanged. The story is that someone working on the set slipped and was hanged and his wife was paid so that they could leave the shot and not have to do a retake. I have heard that since childhood...and, at a particular place in the movie you CAN actually see something in the back ground. Never know lol

    • @nightmaretomb5294
      @nightmaretomb5294 8 лет назад +7

      Judy Garland probably started that story. Her daughter said she told her a lot of stories about the making of that movie that she later learned were all made up.

    • @SeanMcGuire92
      @SeanMcGuire92 8 лет назад +9

      I know, I don't know why. They believe that a body is hanging in A MAJOR HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, PLAIN AS DAY, yet refuse to believe that it's actually a bird? Ok. then. XD (I mean, to be fair, on the VHS tapes it was really blurry and it wasn't until the DVDs came out that you could see it flap it's wings, but still. A body? C'mon, guys.)

The park was in good condition and I really did deal like I was in the movie. I will be posting my video in the coming months. I did manage to snags a rare piece of the original yellow brick road they had a few they were selling. I’ll never forget this place and will be visiting next year from Ohio.

    Hate to be "that" gal, but...nobody here has ever heard of Wizard of oz programming via the Project MKUltra? Everytime I see one these W.O.Z. or Disney related theme parks that are "abandoned" I cant help but think of all the stuff Ive read on TBMC and how Disney, Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland are very prominent types of programming/triggers. This video was amazingly done and only helps to support these theories(IMHO). Nevertheless, you've got a new subscriber.
