Wow! Thank you all so much for the support and constructive criticism! I’m still new to all of this, so I’m definitely in the learning process, but I look forward to producing more content with all of this advice in mind. To answer a common question, Paris Junior College is in Paris, Texas… not France haha. I’ve gotten so used to saying Paris and the people around me knowing what I mean that I didn’t even consider it, sorry about that. Onward and Upward!
Great Video Garrin, You definitely made the right choice. Time to move on and learn something new to expand your knowledge. I'm an independent watchmaker as a self-employed, I enjoy working on my own and with two colleagues of mine, it is more of a freedom and it's good for your mindset at the same time, not to mention, better wages as well. I can't just work for one company forever; it gets tedious over time and I feel trapped, doing the same calibre repeatedly, worrying and stressing about targets and deadlines and letting your boss down. I do watch service and watchmaking for many years and yet, I still have so much to learn especially making the parts, things like that keep me going and excited for new things to learn. I wish you all the best Garrin.
Great to hear you are at PJC! I went through the program there right before Poye transitioned out. A limitation of the program there was that there was only one instructor which extremely limited both the program at PJC and the potential for actually learning Watchmaking. You were for the most part left to work things out on your own. Very frustrating, since there were many things that I struggled greatly with where some proactive mentoring would have been so meaningful (looking at you KIF springs!)
Hey, a watchmaking channel I wasn’t subbed to. 😮 I just fixed that and liked the video. 😄 Best of luck on the career change and FWIW I think you made the right call! We desperately need more watchmaking educators in this country, very happy you chose that path and will help be teaching others. I don’t live anywhere close to PJC, but I’d love to do some traveling and attend workshops etc. Anyway, can’t wait to hear more about the new job - I’m sure you’ll love it! 👍
well, can you spill the beans with the 32,xx series movements and their issues since you're not working on them anymore..would be great to finally have someone be vocal about it, especially someone with your background, feel like it should be spoken about besides the chatter on the forums..
Wow good on you. Happy to hear that you are looking to expand your knowledge and expertise. No doubt leaving a position like that is not an easy one. Very happy for you and I hope you continue to grow your channel
I assume you are referring to Paris, TX? I lived in Plano for 35+ years and knew of the program there. The program in OK ST I believe shutdown, but not sure. Good luck on your new adventure. Pocket watches...Hmmm...Not sure that is a direction I would take, but whatever makes you happy.
Hey Garrin, something for next time, it would be worth explainning what Halton's is, where they are etc. Not everyone is from the US. Likewise you keep saying Paris, now I assume there is a place is the US called Paris? Again, something to clarify for your audience. Always worth erring on the side of caution and assuming your audience is blissfully ignorant and hungry for knowledge than assuming they already know exactly what you're talking about all the time. Just my two cents. Great video and all the best in this new journey!
I quit as a watchmaker many years ago. It's nice watching tubes where watchmakers spend days working on jobs. The truth is it's about speed. You are often paid on a bonus scheme where your pay is based on the number of jobs you complete and this means cutting corners and racing work to make a living wage.
I am at the same crossroads in my career. This is the nth time for me. I have opted for early retirement from a well known accounting firm and now looking for something different.
I had my Rolex day date 18238 serviced but it didn’t pass water tester and ask if I want a new case but would be very expensive I ask is my watch in good working order they said yes but do not merge in water, question to is this something to be concerned I do not plan on swimming/beach ocean
I would like to be a watchmaker but economic realities being what they are, I'd want to do it out of my own shop, also selling watches, clocks, and similar products.
Depending on what kind of perks Rolex was offering you as far as health Insurance Vacation semi annual raises and or Bonuses + with always having work and the company not being slow in the department in your area of expertise I personally would have stayed with Rolex because at the end of the day a watch is still a watch and it’s very very hard to make a super comfortable secure living branching out on your own with only getting business here and there, but I am only going on what you just told us so that’s my two cents please don’t take offense to my comment I wish you the best and I hope it truly works out for you. A+ videos…
Yeah I couldn’t imagine doing anything more boring long term than working for a Rolex accredited place because that is all you’ll ever do and Rolex are just such an insanely easy watch to work on
How a learning and growth life philosophy settles on vintage pocket watches is almost as quirky as it gets, man. Why not go all the way, and focus on extinct musical instrument restorations? lol
The real fact I am also a watchmaker but problem is even you can repair tourbillion or other complication but in the end of the day how much can you bring back home to feed the family. Passion the time amount you spend end up suffer still the family.
Pretty trolling tittle, lame manipulation. But yeah, working on mostly replicas and restorations is a lot more interesting, but good luck in accordion repair! 😊
Hey! Some constructive criticism. You need to figure out how to balance audio levels. Your mic audio is really soft, and your starting intro was really loud. Great content though.
So you have been working/servicing Rolex products at an independent (but presumably Rolex Authorised Dealer?) jeweller in America. Forgive me, but that's not a 'Rolex Watchmaker'. A Rolex Watchmaker makes Rolex watches for Rolex. That said, it sounds like you're taking a sensible step - broadening your expertise so that you can understand and work with timepieces of all manufactures and periods is the mark of the true horologist. The very best of luck to you.
So… with that thinking, a “real” Rolex Watchmaker working at Rolex is the guy who pushes the button to turn on the machine. (just having a bit of fun here) Garrin, good luck in your new persuits. 👍
Respectfully, the definition of watchmaker encompasses both of those who make and/or those who service watches. It’s a pretty all encompassing term, and I’m curious as to why you’d try to correct someone who’s worked in the industry for years on that.
I see no way to get in touch with you so I am hoping this will work. It sounds like you may be in my area, which is McKinney Texas. I realize Paris is a little ways away. I am looking for someone to service a watch, I just inherited 1980s oyster perpetual that still keeps good time but is a mess. If you can give me a contact number I would appreciate it.

Can't wait to see more content here on RUclips and Instagram as well, I'm enjoying your videos of servicing watches, and good luck with your new job.
Good for you man. Taking these kind of risks always lead to great things. I look forward to seeing where your journey takes you 🙏
Love your attitude about constantly learning. As a leatherwork hobbyist, I learn new things every time I touch the tools. Respect, and good luck!
Good luck Garrin. It sounds you have a number of exciting prospects and plans. All the best.

What do you think it is?
Loving that Seiko world time clock in the background!!
Wow good on you. Happy to hear that you are looking to expand your knowledge and expertise. No doubt leaving a position like that is not an easy one. Very happy for you and I hope you continue to grow your channel
Great things are ahead. Thank you for helping to train American watchmakers. I look forward to your content.
Sounds fantastic! Best of Luck in your new endeavors!
Go be amazing dude! Enjoy the ride!
Good luck with your new job. I'd bet that you will be very successful at it.
Seems like a logical decision to expand your horizons on other brands. I wish you luck in your watch making journey!
Congrats man!! Excited to hear you’ll be at PJC!!
Thanks Brian! What a treat to find you in the comment section! Hope you’re well!
Congrats and best of luck as you being your teaching profession.

Guessing he is traveling between Paris and Fort Worth - both are in Texas
Are you in Paris France ? Or Paris Texas ?.i'm a parisien...love to get in touch, Frédéric.

I just found your channel. I’m looking forward to where you go with it!

Looking forward to future content that you have in store for us.
I am at the same crossroads in my career. This is the nth time for me. I have opted for early retirement from a well known accounting firm and now looking for something different.
Well Haltom’s is looking for a new Rolex watchmaker…
Good luck with your career change as a watchmaker at Rolex.
I bought a Pagani and here I am it’s sort of spooky isn’t it? Somethings definitely watching.
Godspeed to you! Looking forward to your future content.
So is rolex discontinuing the GMT Master II Pepsi? Need answers.
How ok are you Garrin? Thank You
I had my Rolex day date 18238 serviced but it didn’t pass water tester and ask if I want a new case but would be very expensive I ask is my watch in good working order they said yes but do not merge in water, question to is this something to be concerned I do not plan on swimming/beach ocean
Congrats on your decision and good luck on your journey
That's great man, congrats!
Can't wait to see Stan on video brother!
Did your jeweler ever make you a counter offer to match PJC? If not, they just considered you ‘a pawn’.
Is a watchmaker someone who doesn't "make" watches. I have always thought that making watches must be a special thing.
Don’t worry about money. Do what makes you happy and follow your passion. I subscribed as a way of being nice. 👍🙂👍
I don't know too much about this but quitting Rolex seems like a bad decision
Awful. He will regret it soon enough.
Seems to me mechanical watch making has run it's course - it's been around for a long time and has been surpassed by new technology. Am I wrong?
The money was good but dealing with the sort of people that own them.......
Just as bad as customers who bring you a Guess watch expecting it to be a Rolex. They’re my favourite.😂
Can you shed some light on what you saw with low amplitude 32xx movements?
Great movement
I would like to be a watchmaker but economic realities being what they are, I'd want to do it out of my own shop, also selling watches, clocks, and similar products.
Glad that you are living your values man. Subscribed)
It's about time!
You’re great. Thank you for sharing.
idk who you are or why you're video was recommended to me, but here I am. Hello. I like watches.
Looking forward to your future content
Respectfully Paul
Now the store has no watchmaker. That’s going to destroy their business.
Good luck, man!
Subscribed…good luck in your endeavors…l’ll be “ watching “.
Glad you got out on parole. It must have been terrible to work at Rolex. I won't hold it against you though. ;)
It’s actually great to work at Rolex in Switzerland
Good luck in your new endeavours!
Start fry the very beginning for future amateur watch makers like me. They’re are hard if not impossible to find a good one. They always cut corners.
Good luck!
good luck mate!
Hope you got a goody bag filled with Rolex parts before left😂 best of luck in your path! If you’re ever in the U.K. let me know.
Wishing you all the best.
i don't understand how everybody has that book a man and his watch. Is an absolute zero book. everybody has it. Why?
Can’t wait to see more content after you gain experience on other brands.
Sometimes you gotta shake things up to keep growing
Heart on sleeve, thank you for keeping it real. T)
Yeah I couldn’t imagine doing anything more boring long term than working for a Rolex accredited place because that is all you’ll ever do and Rolex are just such an insanely easy watch to work on
Hi! just curious about your thoughts on Orient Watches. How the build quality is and long term use etc.
How a learning and growth life philosophy settles on vintage pocket watches is almost as quirky as it gets, man. Why not go all the way, and focus on extinct musical instrument restorations? lol
What are you doing with your life that's so great? Doing your wagie job and playing video games?
Rolex watchmaker ? Or Rolex servicing specialist ?
Yeah. I think he mostly services watches. But he can probably build them too.
You mean he can assemble them. I doubt he could make a watch.
Good for you !!!
It's good to quit rolex due to all big brands' underpaid watchmaker and overpaid their higher management but use watchmaker as advertising. Be

He probably does take them completely apart and build them up again. I would like to have his knowledge regardless.
Rolex makes their watches in a factory. A "rolex watchmaker" is a dude on an assembly line pushing buttons.
👎👎
Nobody cares. Make your own brand, keep 💯 quality, then we'll listen.
