  • Aerial images show what remains of a section of roadway that was once part of the Baltimore Beltway as it ran across the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The road lays damaged, but unbroken, across the Dali, with even the concrete lane dividers still upright. The container ship caused the deadly collapse of the bridge nearly two months ago.

      Depends on the type of the ship on whether or not the ship has more than one bridge. That said the Dali is special because its second bridge currently located on the bow was self installed while the Dali was destroying the FSK bridge. Jokes aside I bet they will be finding bits and pieces of the FSK bridge on the bow of the Dali when it is being cut up into scrap metal at ship breakers in India or Pakistan a few years from now

    It would have been a completely different story If this ship breaks up during impact. It's a miracle (and an amazing feat of engineering) that they were able to re-float it and move it away. Kudos to all involved. RIP for the six workers that died in such a horrible way.

    Just the weight of the roadbed laying across the bow of the Dali - I would estimate that approximately 6000 ft.² of roadbed. Given the average concrete or blacktop roadbed for a span the width of the bridge would be roughly 64 pounds per square foot. So just that section of roadbed weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 190 tons! (384,000 lbs!). Boggles the mind and slightly amazed it didn't simply tear off the bow entirely! I believe they will repair the ship and my guess is they might very well section off the entire damaged bow and replace it. Might be the cleanest possible way to fix it.

    People in the comments are funny. It's unbroken because the piece as a whole has not broken off into small chunks. It's an unbroken section if you ask me. Obviously it's fractured but the way the bridge is built that section remains held together since it's laying on the deck. I'm sure if they lift it then it'll start falling apart. Then it will be a broken up section.

    • @Fadamor
      @Fadamor 13 дней назад +2

      In no way, shape, or form is this bridge section "unbroken". I see at least five separate sections of roadway where the only thing that kept it from falling away was the rebar support in the concrete bed. That's the dictionary definition of "broken".

    our they gonna just let them sit there for while? Our they gonna wait into they begin reconstruction of the new bridge?
    Those too empty road ways just sitting there is not a good look. I’m pretty sure there not gonna reuse them.

      As they will be building an entirely new bridge I'd imagine all of the old bridge will be removed, including the remaining ramps. The new one will be radically different enough (taller, supports further from the shipping channel) that it's unlikely they'd use any of the existing structure.

      The one that would had been in time was in 2018 when Repubs canceled it and subsequent years after. Yes a bill was passed a few months ago, but you just want to make it their fault. It takes months for engineers to draw up plans to build out any idea and put it into place, get bids and actually do it. Had it been done 6 years ago, or even 3, this would not been as bad. The fault lies with the crew not asking for help from the dock master when their engines cut out the first time. Put blame where it belongs.
