      not as fast as a sherman, not as much frontal protection as a sherman, 3-inch howitzer matilda would be needed for any fortifications, and the 2pdr is only good for some armor. while sherman 75mm can deal a wider variety of armored targets and fortification. matilda mk2 extremely outdated by 1942

    As a WoT player. The Matilda is one of the most savage heavy tanks in the game. Despite its small size, that thing just refuses to die at times.

      Its better than the B1 tier 4 heavy, although it is classed as a Medium.

      Probably the best tier 4 tank, especially city maps. Apart from its speed, everything else is good.

      Engie... they were tough little cans. It's worth bearing in mind, because everything the Germans fired at them bounced (apart from the ubiquitous 88mm flak guns), the Matilda was the reason Hitler pressed for the development of the Tiger 1.

    Quite sprightly for an 80-year-old. That is some of the smoothest driving of a military tracked vehicle by a private owner that I have seen on RUclips , perhaps he has some armour or cavalry background?

      @@jakubukleja2553 No but maintaining it is, and that's the point of the comment. Keeping specialized old school military equipment in functional condition 80 years later isn't easy. Especially equipment like this with complex mechanisms to maintain and repair.

      @@PaulRedeemed Considering the fact they drive it 10 miles a year maintaining it is probably not that big a deal. Bulldozers and other heavy equipment can run for thousands of hours and all they ever need is and oil change an tightening of the threads.

      I have been operating this vehicle since I was a teenager. Approximately 40 years. Before that it had a cable blade fitted and my dad cleared around 600 acres of scrub and dug 50 dams with me riding shotgun

    This video gives an idea of the noise and power of what I thought was a small tank but it’s actually quite a size. A unit of the SS Totenkopf division faced a number of these in France in 1940. When they engaged them, the shells of their anti tank guns simply bounced off the Matildas! The SS panicked and abandoned their positions as the tanks simply rolled through them.

      in my mind, the matilda was first real "heavy" tank. even if some folks consider it a medium
      its armor was designed to negate everything of the day, and speed wasn't a priority. it did both those things when it was first produced

    I thought these things were supposed to be slow. Moving along at a right smart clip, if you ask me. Matilda is one of my favorites,

    My both grandpa's served in the Afrikakorps and got captured, when it surrenders in 1943.
    Like most veterans hey didn't talk much about the war, only one photobook was left, with pictures behind the front, the desert etc.
    Just imagine to lie in the desert sand with a dry throat and see this thing rolling to you...

    Got somewhere between 8 and 11 kills in a Matilda one bloody day. Such a ridiculously tough tank. Ran out of ammo and got the final kill by ramming.

    The Matilda tank, in the 40's its armour was the equivalent of the tiger tank but armed with a peashooter.
    It was an counter-attack by Matilda's at Arras May 1940 that was said to have led to the German's using the 88 flak guns to stop them,
    as everything else that the German's fielded couldn't stop them!

    Australias own Tank used in 42 in Africa. Even had the Airfix model as a kid and painted it all up in the correct Camouflage paint in 1972. Great to see a survivor.Didnt know of any. I remember a Centurion tank came into a scrap yard and they bought it and put it out the front as an icon. It was there for years. To a little kid it was a big scary menacing thing.

    I remember the first time I came across it while looking for information on British tanks of World War II: I thought: at least it looks like a modern tank. The armoured tracks give it a robust appearance. In addition to its insufficient speed, its gun became obsolete shortly after entering service.

      @@yesterdayschunda1760 very original. Missing most of the internal turret fittings as they were mostly brass and were scrapped...full sets of internal turret fittings are available but my pockets are not deep enough !

    I presume it is your daughter sitting on top? From a distance I thought it was a spotter with a radio to give hints on where to go. Lo and behold, it was a bored teenager on their phone and it very much cracked me up. Lovely video! It also shows quite well how much noise there is involved in a moving tank.

    If the BEF had even a few hundred of these in France in 1940, history of ww2 would have gone very differently .. The handful that my did have threw Rommel's " ghost division" into full blown panic mode.

      There is an old fiction novel called A Tramp In Armor that I read as a little kid in the 1980s. It's about a Matilda crew in France. Again, pure fiction, but it's not something you see as a subject matter very often.
