"30MnB5 is a boric steel for tempering and quenching, suitable for items and components that are strong, durable and able to withstand high mechanical loads"
pretty commonly used in Europe, for cutting tools, sharp tools used in agriculture, etc. It's a good steel.

An important note for anyone considering these knives: The blade stock is thick and the grind is low. It is also mildly convex and severely convex at the apex. This is why they don't cut so well as delivered from the factory. If you re-grind the bevel flat to an apex they will cut much better. If you re-grind the bevel higher they will cut better still. If you are willing to put in a couple of hours work these can be great knives. If taking a knife to a stone scares you, spend the extra $$$ for a Flexcut or OCC knife.

That's exactly what I done to a Beavercraft . It turned it into a whole different knife. It went from so so to a definite keeper.

Just ordered it, should arrive tomorrow. Should be a nice upgrade from the knive my father fished out of a canal once and which I used for my first project yesterday. XP

Got mine today. So far they seem to work quite nicely. Now they only need a whittler who doesn't constantly breaks the whittled stuff before it's done. XP

I love my Beavercraft tools, I am going to purchase this set on the first of march. So far I have sk1, sk2 hook and spoon knife C1 whittling knife. k8a /14 compact short bent gouge, C17/p universal detail knife, I like this knife allot but a little difficult to learn to sharpen but sharpens well with practice. Coming in the mail today is much anticipated SC05 palm tool set of 6,. I think what is truly important is understanding that quality & skill comes from the carver through practice, not the tool a true master can turn out the same quality of work no matter what brand of tool is used . My Grandpa played a mean Harmonica, he taught me one lesson about skill and instrument . when he put down his expensive professional Harmonica and picked up my toy harmonica and made it sound just as good as his. Carving tools are no different i would suspect. personal preference has it's say because we have so many choices to choose from. Good video needed to see this. Thankyou

While Beavercraft aren't the "professional" level of tools they can still be used to create some amazing pieces of work!

In your opinion are these as good as the 3 piece flex cut kit? This kit is 54 canadian dollars and the flex cut are 74 (doesn't come with a case or strop) the extra 20 is fine to spend for me as long as the long term quality are the same

I would personally buy the Flexcut knives over Beavercraft 100% of the time if they fit in the budget. Also, check the paper backer in the Flexcut packaging when it comes in as they may have rebates or a mail in for a free storage bag (not sure how it works for you in Canada but was free for me)
If you are trying to save some money, Beavercraft will get the job done but there is a noticable difference in cut quality between the two.

Hi. Thought I’d offer up my 5pennies worth. I was gifted the bird carving kit for Christmas. The knife handle is very slender/uncomfortable. The blade is thick and not too sharp. Hence nothing like the blades you are reviewing. I offer this up just do that you know.

Good to know! Maybe they have fluctuations in materials.

That carving kit comes with C1m variant of their knife. It has thick blade for whittling, and slim handle for delicate work. They probably chose it to save space in that little box, but the wood included is HARD, and that's what makes that combination wacky

Beginners, Just make sure you learn how to strop them. Do not get too high on the angle, you will do more harm than good.
