Ah how funny; I’m putting together something like this for borzoi vs silkens! My only small addition is that Silkens also can compete in ISWS and IABCA conformation, not just UKC :)
I like both but my favorite is Silkens because they are the most beautiful dogs who have that Borzoi vibe and charm with the addition of added affection and trainability
We have had two Silken Windhounds, thus far, and they are the best dogs we have ever had. Awesome disposition, very kind, rarely bark, get along with all people of all shapes and sizes, and get along with other dogs. Highly recommended.
For the longest of time I have had a strange attraction to sight hounds, especially the borzoi, so discovering the silken windhound has been an eye-opener. Thank you for this quick but informative video. Your dogs are beautiful creatures.
This is likely the best youtube breakdown I've seen of these breeds, especially as compared to each other. You clearly know your stuff and I really appreciate that I have something to pull from when I want to recommend a good advisement for people who are into these breeds! Tbh, I feel like you get the silkens and their very...methodic but also shyly-social way of thinking and I so, so appreciate that you love them all!
I'm far from being blessed with this type of decision making but your dogs are gorgeous and you have a very clear and pleasant voice. Excellently formatted video!
This is a great video highlighting the difference in the breeds. As an owner of both a whippet and silken it was interesting to see how closely my dogs personalities matched with the descriptions.
I love sighthounds but for me whippets are the best. I didn’t understand people consider whippets as easy first dogs since dogs are dogs and every dogs have different personalities TILL I got my girl. She is hands down the easiest dog I’ve ever trained. Loves to please you and loves to just do nothing and be lazy with me but also at the same time she can do absolutely nuts on empty fields lol makes me feel like I would not have any problems if I get another one and another one
I love sighthounds, and I am looking at different breeds to get one day as I am technically a first time dog owner. Thanks for the video, I'm greatly considering a silken or a whippet!
A whippet mix was my 3rd rescue choice and I ended up adopting a 40lb “whippet/pointer.” Fast forward a year, 20lbs and a breed test - I have a Staffy mix. hahaha. However, I couldn’t have dreamed up a cooler dog. 😊 Moral of the story is that the gut knows. Hope you had/have luck finding your perfect doggo!!
I totally agree. We had 4 at one time but now down to 1. I just love them to bits except I don't agree about hair loss. That was the one thing that bothered me having light coloured tile floors- I am always vacuuming up fur but I am not complaining. The other issue I have is how much space 1 smallish Whippet takes up on the bed!!! he demands more than 1/3rd of the bed all to himself. As the house is his and we are just his guests we put up with it. 😂
Silkens have special fur though. It never matts unless food gets stuck in it. I don't even have to brush her, but I do anyway to keep fur from getting everywhere. She does shed a lot, I admit. I've been told not to use topical flea/tick treatments on sighthounds, so I use Bravecto.
I agree but mine sheds a lot! Maybe she is still a pup but god these short hairs are everywhere. But I love that it’s so easy to maintain their hygiene✨
I think it could be a Silken Windhound for me. I have had experience with both breeds but before I knew about Silkens we focused on getting a Whippet as we had looked after one for months at a time and she was an awesome dog. We really wanted a puppy and could not wait any longer so my husband went ahead and put a deposit on a Saluki puppy. I love our Saluki to bits but she is not the easiest dog to deal with. Since the age of 2, although very well socialized she has become a bit fearful of other dogs. She was also extremely hard to house train. I have to be very selective as to where to let her off leash as she can get spooked and will run. There are two Wind hounds in our town and I agree with everything you have said about them. They seem more trustworthy off leash, calmer, not as easily spooked and very attached to they owners. I would love to take a dog into care homes or school but she is just not that social with people she does not know. I do know that her sister has a different personality so maybe it is just the way she is and that is ok as she is my heart dog and I could not love her more. A great video.
I love sighthounds. I recently lost my beloved greyhound and have been in mourning his loss, he was my loyal companion but I could not trust him off leash unless in a fenced area. One thing I have learned, my life is not the same without a dog. Sighthounds have the best temperaments. I just came across the Silken Windhounds today and their versatility and size are making me lean towards a Silken when my heart feels ready to get another dog. This video was very helpful.
Both are beautiful, wonderful dogs! I have to say, though, that my heart belongs to Greyhounds. I lost my retired racer early last month, and I so miss having a Grey in the house! I live in Canada, though, so it's really hard to adopt a Grey, right now, with the border closed. I'm hoping by summer I'll be able to welcome another Grey or two into my home!
We lost our retired greyhound June 2021 and we are still broken hearted. Hopefully you will find a new love, we are thinking of trying a smaller breed as we are getting older but suspect, sadly, part of the reason our Grey was so lovely was her racing days. Maybe just time for a pound dog.. Definitely have a hole in my heart.
@@FiveFlavors We actually ended up adopting a dog that my friend had to rehome. She was an 8 month old Shiloh Shepherd, now 3 years old. We adore her, and she helped me heal so much from Gears' passing!

Och, that's was a lovely video. I was telling my my about a Silken Windhound, golden all over, that my Papillion Mario used to run with in Leith links park, Edinburgh..14 years ago. Mario is still doing well, but pants a little when he runs flat out. Used to go as fast as the Windhound. He is on the big side for a Papillon, 6kg or so. He is still a wonderdog. Your video and dogs were terrific. Thanks Kirsteen

I decided to go with a german shorthair for my service dog but I wanted a silken. Thank you for showing thier trainability!!! When I retire my gsp- I'm going silken!!!!
I love your comparison. But I was really surprised due to the silken windsprite being quite a new dog breed there seems to be quite some variation in them. Over here in europe they tend to have less coat and look more like a long haired version of a whippet. Yours also seem to have some difference in body structure than the ones breeders offer in germany.
Ok but like they’re both so cute omg!!!! I think a silken would fit my preferences better tho I love to hike and explore! And from this video I learned a lot! Thank you for providing this info about silkens and whippets!

Ha ha!! Why not both! Right! I have the visual weakness for seeing multiples of anything. How about a "basket" of puppies? I wish!!! But... Not. I'm not that crazy, but almost. Two is fine. The black & white whippet is extremely beautiful. The black & white brindle is also STUPENDOUS!. I also love greyhounds, borzoids, salukies and.... now... silken windhounds. What is an old nearly retired single man to do? My scottie is the love of my life at age 7 and I was accustomed to having two. So many options!!! But the dogs in THIS video knocked my socks off!
Thanks so much Roy! I will say, not to try to sway you of course but I think a Silken is pretty ideal for people getting closer to the point of retirement, a lot of my friends have moved from larger breeds like Borzoi to the Silkens!
I got a silken pup specifically as a hiking companion. He definitely does not have a mommy minimum distance 💀 very independent and has no problem ditching me. Actively working on it with him. He's only 9 months so I'm hoping it's more of a bull headed teenager phase right now. He's also SO dog happy and will bolt for any dog he sees immediately 🤦🤦 training training training with him

Would you say that a Whippet and a Silken Windhound are good dogs for a first time dog owner? So I went with a labrador for my 3rd service dog. But I don't think I will get another one. I was thinking about a whippet for my next dog (years from now) but I think you really just sold me on a Silken! Thanks
@@airbenderdogs Thank you! I would MUCH prefer the coat of a whippet as I am a long time IG and retired racing greyhound owner (I think I have had about 10 of them) I really liked what you mentioned about a Silken being better off leash. It's one thing that I really don't like about my lab. She is so distracted with smells that her ears literally stop working. So despite 4 years of working hard on recall, she doesn't have a great one AT ALL. My first IG was fantastic off leash (which is rare I'm sure) as were most of my full greyhounds. Likely because they lived off leash on huge fenced acreage... They were just used to it... I'm sure I could get used to a silken coat. I got used to a labrador!! hehe
They are more rare in Europe than in the US, for sure. There are breeders in Europe but I’m not sure about Italy specifically. I only know of breeders in Norway and Sweden.
I lost my 15-year-old whippet in February. Not ready for another, but my next dog will definitely be a whippet. Who did you get your whippet from? Gorgeous. I love the black and white ones. I will choose a puppy for personality and temperament, but my dream is that it will be a black and white.
Any chance you know anything about windsprites and how they compare to silken windhounds? I know windsprites have a thinner coat but I’m trying to find personality differences. Great video!!
I don’t know as much about windsprites, and what I’ve heard about their differences has honestly varied a lot. If you’re trying to decide between them, I would look at what specific breeders you have access to and what temperaments they are producing. Also, look at what events you want to participate in and whether the breed is accepted there.
This was very helpful, thank you! Would you say that whippets would be suitable for service work? I have adhd and social anxiety and am looking for a calm, playful, medium sized breed.
Have you noticed more of a tendency towards anxiety, timidness, or sensitivity to new things or environments in one breed than the other? My current dog (a shelter mutt) is incredibly quick to form negative associations and difficult to desensitize, and he is generally very hesitant to step onto new textures, touch new things like kayaks, etc. Obviously early socialization plays a big role in that, but is that anxiety or timidness a common trait in either breed?
I don’t think either breed as a whole tends more towards anxiousness, more so it’s key to find a breeder that both breeds dogs with non-anxious temperaments and has a solid puppy-raising program.
They actually don’t exist in Australia- many people have been interested in bringing them over but the cost has been prohibitive. Anyone in Australia claiming to breed them unfortunately is scamming :(
For me the difference is the hair. The silkens leave hair everywhere, piles in the corners, all over my pillow, everywhere. With our greys you pretty much never even notice hair.
Thank you for the video! I’m wondering how they do with the rain. Is one better about it than the other? I had an IG once that ran for the door to get inside at the first drop of rain 😂
I’m interested in silken Windhound do you know any breeds I live in the USA but I can’t seem to find any not sketchy ones and yours looks lovely If you don’t mind me ask which Breeder is she from
This video is very good! I really want a Silken Windhound but I've noticed some of them have ears that stand erect. I think this takes away from their elegance. Is there a way to get one that the ears will stay down?
I think this varies. Some want to be touching you, some want to just be in the room and don’t need to be “on you”. I don’t find them as clingy as my whippet.
Wow, LOVED this video! I am considering adopting a sweet Silken in the future! May I ask if you adopted your from a specific breeder? Thank you for this informative video :)
Hey there! Sega, the silken in the video is from a breeder called Solo Silkens but she is not breeding right now. Tell me, are you in the “Facebook Silken Windhound Community” group?
How long do you go out with each dog per day? And how long is the minimum for these breeds to go out each day, to be so calm indoor? And how much do the breeds need to run free?
Not all of our dogs do outings each day but we live on some land so they get to run a lot each day. The amount of exercise needed will vary by dog but young puppies pretty much need free access to running in a safely enclosed area.
@@chrismartineson461 They are originally from Texas, ha. And they are in the same family as greyhounds, but they are more related to Borzoi and Whippet so you were on the right track there. They just aren’t a direct mix of the two.
They are only 30+ years old so yes they are pretty new- and they do look a lot like Borzoi, but smaller! They look quite different from a Saluki and Saluki are also larger.
@@airbenderdogs There is a fascinating [If very sad} 100 yr Pathe News film of Borzois hunting Wolves in Russia in the snow. Borzois were popular more in the late 20th C in UK than they are now...I haven't seen a Borzoi in about 20 years...The film is worth looking for for an historical perspective. Cool
This was very helpful, thank you! Would you say that whippets would be suitable for service work? I have adhd and social anxiety and am looking for a calm, playful, medium sized breed.
How do I find a great silken wind hound breeder? I’m in Texas.
@@airbenderdogs Thanks!
What a lovely video :-)
Awwww silkens are so sweet 🥺🥺🥺
I want a silken but in Australia they are super rare as they are only a handful of breeders
This is def true 😅
Site hounds.. definitely a jack of all trades.
Yes thanks for posting this
Thank you for the video! I’m wondering how they do with the rain. Is one better about it than the other? I had an IG once that ran for the door to get inside at the first drop of rain 😂
I think my Silkens are a bit better than my whippet but they’re all not as bad as my smaller dog 🐶
@@airbenderdogs Thank you!
I’m interested in silken Windhound do you know any breeds
I live in the USA but I can’t seem to find any not sketchy ones and yours looks lovely
If you don’t mind me ask which Breeder is she from
This video is very good! I really want a Silken Windhound but I've noticed some of them have ears that stand erect. I think this takes away from their elegance. Is there a way to get one that the ears will stay down?
Salukis are good dogs as well but aren’t as easy to find (any good breeders).
That isn’t even a question really lol. I have Silkens and have met quite a few whippets, I would say defo Silkens
How are these dogs bred please sorry I'm new to running sighthound 🙏☘️🇮🇪
I’m not sure I understand your question about how they are bred :) can you be more specific?
Whippets shed twice a year! The first half and the last half. 😁
What is the toy in the yard that they are chasing?
Hi, love the video :). How cuddly are the silkens compared to other breeds? Where would you place them?
I think this varies. Some want to be touching you, some want to just be in the room and don’t need to be “on you”. I don’t find them as clingy as my whippet.
Is there a reason they need a muzzle?
love your video!!!
Thanks for your help :)
Is a Silken a Longdog between Borzoi y Whippet?
No, they aren’t. There is more than just whippet and borzoi in there, and they have bred true for many generations :) that’s a good question though!
What is the mix for the silken hound! Borzoi/Whippet mix?
They are a purebred dog :)
@@airbenderdogs where are they from originally? Greyhound cousins?
@@chrismartineson461 They are originally from Texas, ha. And they are in the same family as greyhounds, but they are more related to Borzoi and Whippet so you were on the right track there. They just aren’t a direct mix of the two.
Thank you!
With all due respect, every single dog is a blend! Very similar to most of us! European muts! Beautiful sighthound however!
Who's the dog at 5:00? Is more videos agility videos of them? 😊
That is Summerspirit Secretariat! He belongs to the kennel Oak Creek Silken Windhounds and Mudik, so you can look him up there :)
I've never heard of a 'Silken Windhound'.... {UK} ...To me they look a bit like Borzoi /Saluki ..Are they a new breed?
They are only 30+ years old so yes they are pretty new- and they do look a lot like Borzoi, but smaller! They look quite different from a Saluki and Saluki are also larger.
@@airbenderdogs Thanks for replying...30 ish yrs in the scene of things is very recent . :)
Wolves were so common in Siberia &c then.
