    Thank you for mentioning greyhounds in a positive way! Jess (the whippet, not the human), reminds me so much of one of our adopted greys. Tippi is a *tiny* black greyhound who came to us nine years ago, straight off the racetrack. She was so terrified of everything, we had to enter any room on our hands and knees and speak in whispers. Nearly a decade later, she's the funniest, bossiest, most affectionate little girl!

      @Worriedwhippet  2 года назад +1

      Aw Tippi 🥺. Sounds like you did such a good job with her! We’re hoping one day they invent a bed big enough for us, Jess and a greyhound to spread out in 😂

    100% accurate video! My girls are the exact same way. I get the question all the time "Are they hyper?" because people often confuse their initial anxiety with hyper energy. If they could only see how much they sleep! :D

    I got a beautiful little 8 week old whippet 3 days ago and named her Jess....then I found this channel! :-) Even in the time I have had her, my little girl is displaying most of the traits you describe. I put her in a dog bed on top of the dooner and woke up several hours later with her under the dooner down near my feet. Thanks for the info on the breed, it's very helpful.

    You speak about your whippet with such love! Love it! We have TWO whippet grandpups. You forgot to mention how entertaining they are, with their silly antics and multiple ear positions. i used to look up videos like this before i got a whippet, now i do it to see if i can relate to them. and i do. hehe. my little 3yo whippet is pretty chill for the most part. best thing i ever did was teaching recall when she was still a puppy. we still struggle with cats and yapping small dogs. but i think thats fairly normal

    Ive got a whippet who is 1/4 Lakeland terrier. More hardy but has the same traits. Wish that people would cross breed more . The obsession with breed standards is a recent thing. Hope the Pedigree police dont ruin what was once a healthy and resilient dog type. Well done on giving her a secure and happy life . Kudos to you

    your right about greyhounds they are fantastic pets especially when retired people are put off thinking they will chase everything believe me they wont i have had a few retired and they are the most layed back loveable pets you ask anyone who has had one they most always get another one and they dont need loads of exercise they would rather curl up in there beds or on the sofa with you

    I've met people who have whippet rescues who don't like to cuddle, and this breaks my heart. I have two whippets, and they both cuddle in different ways but are both so so cuddly. However, because they don't cuddle the same way, they don't often cuddle with each other. I've heard that dogs from the same breeding lines settle into cuddling with each other more readily than those without.

    anyone who loves sighthounds I feel should know that lurchers are a whole different ballgame, my lurcher is half greyhound a quarter whippet with saluki and staffy making up the rest of his dna and he needs and demands 3+ hours exercise a day , everyone I know with a lurcher their dogs are the same, I don't understand why they need so much exercise 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Jess is absolutely gorgeous. We have a black whippet girl called Giada, she too is a worrier and hates loud noises. Just like Jess she has a strong prey drive and loves the beach.
    I wish I could send you a photo of our girl, she weighs in at 8.2 kilos and is really tiny, definitely a pure whippet though.

    How is whippet recall? Do they wander or stay close to you when off lead?

    • @Worriedwhippet
      @Worriedwhippet  Год назад

      Jess tends to stay close unless she spots a squirrel. We know the hot spots and put her on the lead but it’s not foolproof. And her recall varies depending on how much we work on it ☺️

  • @deborahd2936
    @deborahd2936 2 года назад

    I’m considering a whippet to go with my standard poodle, but we go off leash often, and I’m concerned about that concept. My dog chases things, but I train her on her recall and she’s done way better recently. I even train her to break her chase to return by doing this during a ball chase. I think I could train a whippet to be safe in my unfenced back yard with much training and socializing, but I haven’t seen too many people prove that it’s doable with a sighthound. Any videos, etc. I can reference? Will a reputable whippet breeder sell to someone with plans like this?

    • @Worriedwhippet
      @Worriedwhippet  2 года назад +2

      I had the same concerns when we got our whippet, it took me a long time to be confident enough to let her off lead but she’s great. All of the whippets we know go off lead, it’s just about finding the places you feel comfortable doing it 😊

    I love Greyhounds but I cannot risk rehoming one. I have two cats and I heard a horror story once about a woman who took home a 'cat tested' adult rescue greyhound only to find that the worst had happened to her cat one morning. A pup might be the way to go as it could possibly be raised with the cats to see them as family, but Greyhound puppies are like unicorns in their rarity. I'm thinking a Whippet might be the compromise as they have similar temperaments and there are more breeders around. Does anyone have Whippets with cats? What are your experiences?

    • @Worriedwhippet
      @Worriedwhippet  Год назад +1

      Our whippet isn’t good with cats unfortunately but we’ve known dogs who are! I think introducing them as a puppy is a good idea. You could book a session with a behaviourist to help you make the introductions. I hope it goes well! 🤞

    I want a whippet but i have 3 bunnies. What do you think?

    • @briannarader1598
      @briannarader1598 Год назад +1

      Personally, I would say more than likely a very bad idea. They were honestly bred for hunting small game like rabbits and so you would have to keep them separate at all times which isn’t fair to either of the pets. I would find a breed that does well with smaller animals and is tested with a very good temperament and low prey drive along with lots of positive reinforcement and SLOW introduction. But no, in my opinion, a sighthound of any kind with rabbits is not a good idea. I do wish you luck in finding a dog that fits the best in your life!! ❤

    I'm to get my whippet puppy in July this year "Cary Grant ". Can't wait ,my question is what is good temperature is a good for the inside of you house in winter? I have old Victorian. Nervous about keeping him warm enough. I'm a seamstress he will have plenty of outfits . Now we humans" My son and his girlfriend" keep it at 62 degrees because of heat bill but I can turn up more for the spoiled little bugger. Is like 70- 75 degrees better with his romper on? Do they get ticks also? No one ever talks about that? Here in the States we have problems with them in rural area's. Love your video's

    • @squidgythings
      @squidgythings 2 года назад +1

      They do get ticks but they’re easier to spot because of their single coat and fairly short fur.
      We live in an old and drafty Victorian house and I worried about the same thing. My whippet wears fleeces round the house in winter and snuggles up next to us in blankets on the sofa and under the duvet at night.
      He loves the open fire when we have it lit too. Generally they feel the heat and cold very similar to us and so if you’re ok in the house with a jumper on then they are too. If it’s cold enough to need the duvet or a blanket, they get under with you. So cute! It only goes down to just below freezing here.
