Great video and demonstration. My uncle used 22 shot shells to scare birds out of his back yard plum trees. He was too far away for the shot to actually hit the birds or make it to the tree but the noise would scare away the birds. I didn't read through all the comments but I didn't see where there were any comments on your speed loaders. I use pre-cut aluminum arrows capped off with hot glue on one end and a pencil eraser on the other and load up my ammo in them to dump down my feed tubes when out of bullets. It brought a smile to see you using what you had there to quickly and efficiently load up your Henry with 12 precounted bullets! Thanks for the time, expense and sharing your findings. Subscribed!

@@buffalosoutdoors I've seen a few of your videos. All down to earth. Unbiased. Honest. Just plain straight forward and on subjects I find interesting. Thank you for taking the time to share them. Yes, 22 tube fed speed loaders are so practical. Many shooters give tube fed 22s a bad rap due to the "normal" loading procedure that's time consuming and labor intensive vs the magazine fed rifles. Reality is that equipped with some pre-loaded tubes it's so much easier to load up a tube fed 22 as opposed to a magazine fed one. Maybe a "short" on tube fed 22s would bring you more viewers? Those "shorts" if done right are catchy! I never knew there was a smooth bore 22 rifle... too bad that barrel on that Henry wasn't interchangeable. It's a shame to see a gun with such a specialized need only used for shot shell... then again, maybe that smooth barrel Henry 22 shoots as accurately as a grooved barrel 22? Hey, that would be interesting to see! -- the differences in accuracy between the rifled vs smooth bore shooting various "normal" 22 ammo out of your Henry 22s! I'm bad. You do you Buffalosoutdoors! Who would have thought that a 25 minute video about "rat shot" would be interesting, informative and entertaining. Well I found it to be all of them even if I knew most of the information at some level it was good to see it presented in a way that is easy to understand and totally unbiased so that you can draw your own conclusions. I've found that the CCI is the most common brand to find in my local stores but I'm sure that I could find the others if I looked hard enough. Unfortunately most of my pest control is done with a .410 bore or 22lr 40gr as the "rat shot" is a bit light for the little "stinkers" that raid my barnyard.
2:072:072:072:07 Great video, I'm from the UK where smooth bore .22s are more common due to our restrictive gun laws, having worked in pest control for 30 years have used .22 rat shot quite often, a common smooth bore over here is the Webley B/A single shot which is also choked, it compares to the Henry S/B for pattern with crimped or capsule cartridges, I had a Marlin Mountie that hated the crimped shells but my Winchester 9422 was ok with both but as your video showed rifles did not throw such a tight pattern. I never got to try the Winchester shells but if I ever need more I'll try to find some. Although the rat shot .22 has it's uses the 9mm Flobert is much more effective at a little longer range especially with slightly larger shot. Thank you for a very interesting video..🇬🇧
Always a good day when you post! This is very interesting, I also never really thought much about the comparison but now I know. Also weird that the Winchester seems worse on paper (payload, shot size, etc.), but then appears to give better results. Thanks for the info!
I think I prefer the cci with the smooth bore. I think the Winchester wins in the rifled barrel because their cotton-ball style wadding doesn't have the ability to pick up spin. I don't like the inconsistency of the Winchester pellets. Thank you for doing a well rounded test.

Great content Sir. As a newTuber, I strive to make content as detailed and entertaining as you. Keep up the great work. You do so much in categories I like, revolvers, 22 Magnum, and anything 35 caliber.
There's a familiar face and voice, good to see you back on! I prefer long form, you don't fill the time with wasted talk and footage, good job Buffalo. Would be fund to see this same testing branch out into the available shotshells for revolvers. Maybe start .357mag (most common), and go to .45 or something similar. CCI is probably the most common with this, but I also see DoubleTap has some pretty sweet innovation, and what little video evidence I found, the DoubleTap was significantly better in rifling (besides the light wadcutter backing).
Thank you! I sure am glad to be back home and able to start doing the long videos again. I might experiment with shotshells in center fire revolvers. Sounds fun to me!
👍👍Thanks Buffalo, I’ve never used the federal or Winchester but have dispatched many a snake with the cci. I have only shot mine out of a revolver and I’ve used the 22lr and the 357/38 spl. Also I have been no more than a couple of yards away when I shot them. Always appreciate your thorough videos, hope you’re having a great day.
You're absolutely right freedom is the greater good. Informative video. Thank you very interesting to watch. For years I shot the CCI ammo but then I tried to cycle it through a tube-fed semi-auto 22 and a lot of times that little plastic cup on the end of the shell would break and leave BB's in the action of my gun. So then I went to the Winchester ammo. I've always favored the Winchester ammo ever since.
I know I'm behind the power curve on this one, but it was good to see you back doing what we all know you're great at doing. Thanks, and now I need to go find some of those Winchester snake shots!
Definitely included ALL VARIABLES in the video 👍🏻👍🏻 giving users All the information they need to make an informed purchase depending on the need... Accurate spread cost👍🏻
The targets during the first analysis were switched. the tighter patterns were the rifled bore and not the smooth bore. The federal shot through the rifled bore had the plastic wad went through the target.
Patterning differences between rifled and smooth, I think are due to the hard plastic wadding of both the CCI and the Federal vs the Winchester wadding being of a nature to not impart a spin on the payload as much as the plastic disc and the plastic capsule.
Great video, Buffalo! Welcome back! Hopefully we'll see a follow up with your kit guns like the Ruger LCRX 3" and the like. I carry Federal in my Ruger for park hikes and the like, and it seems to pattern well at 3-5 yards.
Buffalo, is there a significant difference in noise among the shotshells. These are sometimes used under the house, in the garage, or in enclosed areas for pests. I have some cci and find them tolerable out of a revolver but was very interested in the winchester if they were close in volume.
Useful and practical information. I use the CCI, if only because it's the only one I have ever seen on the shelf. Perhaps I need to look harder. Thanks Buffalo, love your videos!
That was one detailed testing as I appreciate the results...Good to know as i really enjoy CCI rounds for the .22 platform....Well done....Good stuff....
I marked the targets as I took them down. They are correct. There is nothing to keep the wad from striking the target with the smoothbore, if that's what you saw. I appreciate the comment, thanks for watching!
@buffalosoutdoors i misunderstood the order. I thought you shot the rifled rifle first and the smoothbore second. I could see, and you commented on it, at 11:22 where the wad hit the target. Again, I thought that was the rifled bore test. Sorry for the error!
@ I wish I’d have been more clear on which barrel I was shooting first. Others have mentioned the same thing as you. I appreciate it, sometimes I do screw up.
Glad you're back. I have used cci and federal for copperhead control, finding the federal crimped more effective. I have never tried the winchester crimped. Thanks for posting this.
This is a VERY detailed video! Great Job! I'll have to get a box of winchester now, LOL!!! I was wondering about the CCI and Federal (i just bought those as well). Again, thank you for taking so much time to create this video; very helpful!
Subscribed. Your thoroughness was persuasive. Also great video editing. Very well done! I think all three companies may be using different densities for their pellets-pure lead vs. lead alloys, etc. This may account for the weight vs. pellet count difference. Best regards
I was using these in a Ruger 10/22 and not only do they not cycle, but the crimped Federal rounds wouldn't extract most of the time. I had to pluck them out of the bore after firing them. I also had a much better pattern from the CCI in the Ruger. Thanks for the video! I'll be grabbing some Federal next time.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the different brands, I haven't had any cycling issues like that with my 10/22 (other than the fact that I have to cycle manually) but I appreciate the heads up!
Excellent..... Winchester has been making that load for probably 70+ years...guess they have it down... Would love to see the loads out of the Ruger LCRX 3"....
I'm glad you were inclined to do this comparison. I have used all 3 of those exact branded loads, and WINCHESTER always out performs the others. They are great for pests inside my barns. No damage to anything except the ratts and bird shitting birds! Ha! Great video, Buffalo!
Good to see you, Buffalo. I hope you and your family are doing well, and that you have a great Thanksgiving! Having grown up on a ranch in west Texas, SW of Abilene, I always carried a handgun for snake protection when working in the pastures, since I was about 12 years old. I tried everything in .22 shot loads, .38 Special and .44 Special. In those days, (early to mid-60s) I had only the crimped type .22s and handloaded .38 and .44 Special shot loads. After 'testing' on many actual rattlesnakes, I found the BEST choice was just a normal 40gr. .22 LR solid bullet. The effective distance of the shot loads is so short, that I can just as easily head shoot a snake within the effective range of a shot load. They were always more expensive than regular .22 LR rounds. They were useless for any other 'pests' I would run across...like jackrabbits, foxes and coyotes. Even a .22 LR is not completely adequate for foxes and coyotes...but that is why we had a .30 M1 carbine rifle in two of our trucks and a Savage Model 340 in .22 Hornet in another truck. FWIW, in later years I also tried the CCI plastic capsule loads in .22LR, .38 Special and .44 Special. I never found any that were better for snakes than my S&W Model 34 Kit Gun with regular .22 LR rounds. Thanks for all your efforts and work to bring us videos!
Nice video. Thank you. The Federal cases would stuck in my Henry’s chamber after it was show. I suspect the expanded crimp was the cause. The CCI shot shells would stick in the rifling of my Ruger MKIII when I try extra an unfired round after chambering. Make sense because of that large capsule.

Thanks Buffalo. I always thought the CCIs looked coolest, but they're also the ones ones I've ever actually shot.
Great video! Love to see a comparison between "shorts" and "quiets" if you haven't already done so. ✌🏼
Thank you! I don't think I have done that yet.
While I have no use for .22 shot shells, this was a pretty good test. I wasn't aware anyone made a smooth bore .22. So I learned something.
Great content Sir. As a newTuber, I strive to make content as detailed and entertaining as you. Keep up the great work. You do so much in categories I like, revolvers, 22 Magnum, and anything 35 caliber.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and the kind words. Subbed your channel.
Cool video! Nobody else has tested those and I did not know they made a smooth bore .22. Thanks Buffalo
No kidding... I didn't know that they had a smooth bore 22 🤯
@@buffalosoutdoors If you do, I'm most curious about DoubleTap Snake shot load.
@ I didn’t even know about it until you mentioned it. I’ll definitely include it if I can get some.
@@buffalosoutdoors That would be fantastic.
Absolutley love the no fluff straight forward videos... purchased a firearm and a couple 20ga chokes soley based on your reviews. Thank you!!!
@@gtarick1225 thanks for this comment. I am so glad my videos have helped you!
Great comment. These things can be handy if used within their limits! Glad you enjoy my videos, I always appreciate your comments!
@@WilliamJohnson-g6z good point, I never thought about the capsule breaking and making a mess in the action. Thank you.
Thanks for doing all the groundwork for us. Rock on smooth bore rat control.
Maybe this is where the ammo companies get to use the reject bird shot from their shot gun ammo...lol
Probably!
I know I'm behind the power curve on this one, but it was good to see you back doing what we all know you're great at doing. Thanks, and now I need to go find some of those Winchester snake shots!
@@kirkmooneyham good to see you in the comments! Hope all is well. I’m glad to be here.
Nothing to complain about. The vidio did its job. Everything needed to make the choice was in it. Thanks. Shakespeare countryUK
Good to see you back on the range! Excellent comparison. Really helpful.
FWIW I could hear the difference in the loudness of the report from the beginning. This was different but a very cool video. Thanks Buffalo!
Good voice, material and presentation. The fast pace was appreciated. Finally, someone who doesn't make my ears bleed.
@@zekegeorge6213 glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Definitely included ALL VARIABLES in the video 👍🏻👍🏻 giving users All the information they need to make an informed purchase depending on the need... Accurate spread cost👍🏻
It's great to see you back. Always enjoy your vids. Great video
Excellent review. Just what I needed to know. Have you tried them out of a revolver ?
The targets during the first analysis were switched. the tighter patterns were the rifled bore and not the smooth bore. The federal shot through the rifled bore had the plastic wad went through the target.
Great professional review. Thanks!
Glad you are back!
I'm glad to be back too!
Hello! Glad to be back! I can definitely get more KIT gun action!
As usual an EXCELLENT VIDEO and demonstration!
Buffalo, is there a significant difference in noise among the shotshells. These are sometimes used under the house, in the garage, or in enclosed areas for pests. I have some cci and find them tolerable out of a revolver but was very interested in the winchester if they were close in volume.
I was surprised by the considerable difference between smoothbore & rifled. Good video thanks!
Useful and practical information. I use the CCI, if only because it's the only one I have ever seen on the shelf. Perhaps I need to look harder. Thanks Buffalo, love your videos!
Great review. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Test!
Great test! Iv been thinking of picking up one of those garden guns. THANKS for your time and effort.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The Garden Gun is very cool for specific circumstances. I cleaned out the rats from my chicken house with it.
Incredible testing and review Buffalo!
Love his detail explanations in his reviews.
That was one detailed testing as I appreciate the results...Good to know as i really enjoy CCI rounds for the .22 platform....Well done....Good stuff....
@@scottf.3808 thanks. I enjoyed this one as it’s one of those where I learned something. Those are my favorite videos to make.
@@buffalosoutdoors 👍👍👍👍👍👍
You do a nice thorough job on testing comparisons
Gonna have to pick up some of the Winchester. I didn't even know they had a smoothbore .22!! Thanks for the testing.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Those Garden Gun smooth bores are pretty neat.
At 14:32 i think you have them backwards. We can see where the wad hit on the bottom right target, indicating it was your rifled shot
Very informative video, I like all the data you bring to us viewers thanks for putting in the time and effort.
I love your comparison videos. Lots of info. Thoroughly covered. Thanks!!!
Glad you like them, thank you!
Very methodical approach to your comparison. Well done!
@@bbhrdzaz thank you!
That was a great video, It gives people a better idea of how that bullet actually works
Nice video. i have the cci and was curious about other brands and styles of this type of round great video
@@zephjohnson2687 thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the video.
Good video, he proved that you always need to test yur ammunitions performance in your firearm. Very informative and well done.
Thanks! It's always a good idea to test your stuff.
Nice, I enjoyed the show.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm a bit rusty with the camera work but I'll shake that off after a couple of videos!
Very well executed video. Please keep making content. I’ve subbed.
Glad to see new video. Thanks!
Thank you. Good video and honest opinions. Who could ask for more.
Thanks for the valuable information. I really enjoy your videos. Please keep them coming.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you found it enjoyable!
What an impressive video; you literally thought of everything. Thank you.
Wow, that's almost half what the CCI shot is where I live and is the only one that anyone has locally.
I also think you have the best outro! Freedom IS THE GREATER GOOD!
I've always really liked the look of the CCI rounds, they just look neat and kinda futuristic.
They are the easiest to find too, at least where I live.
Nice to see you back
Glad to be back!
