Subsidies have led to cheap toxic food and should be done away with. Free market.

Correction. US agriculture needs diversification and for the government to get their hands off our throats. It’s government subsidies that have killed small to moderate sized diversified farming operations that were common place before the farming crisis in the 80s. The only reason we see fewer and fewer farms swallowing up more and more land to grow corn and soybeans which is essentially mono cropping, is because subsidies made it “profitable”.

  • @mbailey12341

As a taxpayer, I’m sick of the subsidies. Ethanol isn’t the answer either.

Get the government completely out of food production then farmers would prosper then. too much government manipulation in USDA reporting….. I doubt the consumer would like it though, because the price of food would definitely be higher. The government is never gonna let go of control of the food supply, though control the food control the people.

Few people understand subsidies. Many people believe farmers are paid to grow no crop. 30 years ago there was set aside acres meant to curtail overproduction so prices would rise to profitable levels. Yes, farmers were paid to set aside, leave land idle. None of us "like" subsidies but without them and crop insurance farming would be in constant boom and bust cycles making for wide swings in food prices and no doubt hoarding as we went thru during covid.

@@tapitXq9 I think we are wasting our valuable land away on silly things like ethanol and biofuels. Why did all the cow calf guys need bailed out last year? Cattle market was high. They could sell cows and be fine or afford to buy some hay because cattle market was up. Land bringing $15k in Illinois last week is absurd. Things are messed up. Corn and soybeans aren’t food. We’ve lost our way folks👎

@@mbailey12341 I have no answer on cattle bailout since i'm not familiar with it. I will add that after 9/11 when George W was in office there seemed to be a turning point of numerous new farm programs for all sorts of things besides grains. From bees to 4 legged livestock. Still though something like 80% of USDA monies spent is on nutrition programs such as food stamps under various names.

@@tapitXq9as a farmer myself we need to get off of relying on government and become more resilient and diversify. In many ways government has caused most of the issues we face today, however we need to take responsibility for allowing it to happen. You mentioned money to keep fields idle to raise corn prices and that’s true, but if farmers are in agreement with that program than they don’t believe in capitalism and free markets because that is a manipulated market. We grow so much corn and soybeans in this country and than expect the government to make mandates. And we also cube up with ways just to get rid of it, like corn syrup. Grow more food and less commodities.

Crop insurance just lets farmers bid all the profits into land costs. End the subsidies, and farmers would be forced to be more conservative in their land bids. And it would make farmland much less appealing to non-farmers.
It would make it a lot easier for young people to get into farming.

Who rescues my company if they fail, um no body that's who. How much food are farmers in my area actually producing, probably not much. It's corn for ethanol. Subsidies for large corporations, and big business are really the problem because those companies need to be allowed to feel the consequences of their decisions instead of getting too big to fail, and then being bailed out by taxpayers.

They could care less about high inflation until it went into the food. Then they started do something. Farmers are very stupid people.
