Very good vampire film for a 1943 B-Movie. This is the first time I ever watched it. Back throughout the 60's when I was a kid growing up I did watch quite a few horror films from the 30's to the 50's and few from the 60's on TV. I do enjoy the ones that were filmed in Black & White. It was quite the art form with the lighting and shadowing in those films. Even the mysteries and film noir types. And the actors were very classy.
Thanks for a dose of the good, old stuff for the Halloween season. I'd always heard that PRC was a poverty Row studio, but that was nicely done for its day.
I can't do anything but agree with all the wonderful comments below. Such an atmospheric and understated film. Qualities which place it above many others of the era.
Very serious well done movie. Great atmosphere and photography. One of the only vampire movies I really like. George Zucco is so good he makes this seem believable. Dwight Frye has the most interesting facial expressions that I've ever seen in my life, and I also like the performance of Fern Emmett who played Kate. All the actors were perfectly matched for their parts.
Agreed!! George Zucco is Fabulous in every scene...Cheers....Love seeing other ppl on here as enthusiastic as we are...my own Gordon Welke who also loves this film 🍁🧡🖐🏽
@@philipinchina Perhaps he means the classic vampires, since now they are so different and queer, like those werewolves. There is no respect in this World for the classic monsters! Kind greetings.
@@gordonhennefer5074 You're most welcome. I used to complain to my sons that people who make movies today have spoiled our classic monsters and some heroes, too. I can't believe how they have perverted Batman, for example, like on some cartoons where he appears as not having values. It's not the kind of material I used to read. Thanks for your reply and have a great day! August 1/2020.
This is now one of my fave vampire films!! George Zucco is Superb! That actor was a stellar performance everytime and I especially like him as Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes which was portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the Doctor. Cheers yawl --- please enjoy this fun vampire flick!! Tis the season anyway, right? xoxo Thanks PizzaFlix!!
This type of movies are not just for entertainment. They convey important messages, nourishing the viewers. This Movie's Message : Do not be quick to judge a person. Look doesn't matters, it is the soul within that does (twins bodily but the souls are not the same at all). No matter how powerful the evil is, it cannot win ultimately. To destroy the evil you need to be fearless & selfless. The actors have worked hard. No doubt they all were talented, some even exceptionally talented.
Despite its micro budget and very short run time, this is a smart little vampire movie. The struggle between twin brothers, one a life saving Dr. and the other a life taking vampire, I think represents the clash between good and evil within the same person, just as we all find ourselves contending with at times. This idea deserved a bigger budget.
Awww, it's been done so many times. It reminds me of my adult life. I'm a religious, kindhearted, good natured person, but my brother is a blood sucking leach, a vile unthinking abomination, and a self absorbed monstrosity. That's right, he's a Democrat! Nooooooooooooo,(takes a long breath),ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! hehehe!
@@katanakeith1 The thing about your reply is that you could have said Republican instead of Democrat and it would have been just as funny. They are both about as useful as hemorrhoids.
Different to see an older man be a vampire. Good movie! Four years ago when I made that above statement, I wasn’t yet familiar with George Zucco. Since then I have seen him in many old movies and he was always the bad guy. They just couldn’t let him be solely the good guy they had to create a twin bad guy 😂. Poor Dwight Frye. He died at only age 44 in 1943. This movie came out in 1943, so I’m figuring it must’ve been his last one. I read he was on a bus in Hollywood, on his way to start in another movie when he died on the bus. RIP
Dusko Stankovic-But Dusko, it is not 2020 yet. It is still only November 3/2019 at 2:17 a.m. Just wait for two months. I am here because of Dwight Frye. What a character! He was present on so many movies and he adds interest to them. Also I wanted to know more about Mr. Zucco, since his name appears as part of many pictures, maybe in the production, but also as an actor. Enjoy the movie.
Sam Newfield Directed 250 plus movies, in his career. he died in 1964. Sam started in the silent era of film. He had a long career to say the least. He did T.V. educational films, Westerns.

How bout that ole geezer wanting to put the bite on poor Gail. And, how many people would open up the vampires casket, stand there and talk a while and then close the lid and walk out. ha ha ha That's a good one. I know it sure wouldn't be me.
People are unfair on PRC, they did make quality films on a very small budget eg, The Devil Bat, Blue Beard The Strangler In The Swamp, etc. Paul Bacchus esq

Who kisses their uncle on the lips like that? It's not even a quick straight forward kiss. They always bend their head to the side. Now that's creepy!!!
After reading the info blub, I know why I expected someone to answer the cry of "Master, Master," with "Renfield!" (Not a spoiler! Tee hee hahaha!) Pat, but fun.
This is a brilliant movie which I enjoyed. The ending was sad though. However, please let this movie be thought provoking. If you sell your soul to Satan the you become one of his minions. Give you life to Jesus and all will be well

George Zucco in a sterling two part performance! George was an excellent actor indeed!!
I don't have to comment , you said exactly what I would have said 👍
One of the best vampire movies of the forties.
George Zucco had the craziest weirdo eyes..totally evil. He, and Lionel Atwill, were both fantastic heavies in these early flicks. I love this stuff!
I agree with both of you! Watched his movies my whole life! Character actors have always been the salt and pepper of movies!,
They make 'em or break 'em!

Dwight Frye (Zolarr) was also "Renfield", bug-eating pal to Lugosi's Dracula.
With that charming, impish sense of humor.
Is it weird that I’ve always love Renfield and felt sorry for him?? Lol
