Movie theatres make approximately 40% of the ticket sales for the first weeks....so WB only made $22 million opening weekend. 0% chance this movie even comes close to breaking even. Look for a 60%+ drop for the 2nd weekend
Only a fraction of Hollywood's intellectual properties have been successful recently, and they have Moana 2, Gladiator 2, Mufasa, Venom, and Kraven, soon to be released to empty theaters. This is a crisis for the studios.
@@codyw1 lol the 3 movie does look good.. but so did the first 2 and the were awful.. well I kinda liked the first venom but that’s a small kinda but venom 2 is simply unwatchable
While watching your video, I realized that Joker 2 had no choice but to be a massive disappointment and a box office failure because everything that made the first movie a success was unsustainable. Having an A-list, award-winning actor as the anti-hero protagonist can only go so far, especially with a character as psychotic and criminal as The Joker. If the actor’s performance is so iconic that their identity becomes tied to the character, and they can’t make the sequel without the original actor, then the actor holds all the leverage in making the movie. Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix used that leverage of being irreplaceable to get their way, which was to sink the franchise. Continuing on the path expected of Joker-making the character even more evil and criminal-would have ultimately damaged their reputations. The big mistake was casting a star like Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role. If they had cast someone equally talented but relatively unknown, the outcome might have been very different.
Joker 2: Fondling Scooby Doo. The new and improved Joker movie made for "the right kind of audience". What a shame this audience is a super tiny minority.... most of whom won't bother to watch this crappy film
Ehh... more like a female Joker anti-heroine. It's kind of a Deadpool appeal: she's fun. She's having fun. It can be contagious. This movie was so far from that, other than the money, I'm not sure why Phoenix and Phillips agreed to pursue it.
This isn't Harley. Hell, the suicide squad version isn't close either. The real Harvey has spunk and is fun. But just like everything modern, it has to be serious and grim. It all sucks.

DC as a whole has not had a commercial success since 2019 outside of 2022’s The Batman, which does not surprise me. Hopefully the sequel to the Batman and James Gunn’s Superman reboot are good
I think you can make a whole documentary on this failure. A sequel to a movie about joker that isn’t even really joker. Barely resembles anything to the character we know. And then the sequel is a musical. And the sequel is still an origin story. Two films, two origin stories. Of a character that doesn’t resemble, the character it’s pretending to be
Regardless of how anyone feels about the quality of "Joker: Folie à Deux," it was clearly a massive misstep on several levels. Fans of the first Joker would describe that film as an "intelligent, dark, introspective character study". Those type of movies don't get big-budgeted sequels. There lies the first problem. Todd Phillips, in particular, wants to thumb his nose at traditional comic book films but this is just as cynical of any of those films. This sequel only existed because the first film made a billion dollars. This was just a cash grab and it feels like it. The second problem is that they decided to make it a musical. When that news initially broke a year or so ago, most fans were less than thrilled by that idea which made them weary of even seeing it. When the bad reviews started pouring in that only confirmed their suspicions and they opted to stay home. And lastly, and likely the most damning, is that many fans felt betrayed by the handling of Arthur Fleck in this film. He went from being viewed as somewhat of an anti-hero for those that have felt broken and ignored by a twisted, decaying society to now just being a pathetic loser that isn't even the Joker. Which in itself is problematic since there were people claiming in 2019 that he was only the Joker in name only. That pissed off a lot of people at the time. Well, Todd Phillips told those fans they were wrong. Arthur Fleck is not only not the Joker but he may have been killed by the real Joker. The sequel feels very much like a repudiation of how certain fans felt about Arthur Fleck in the first film.
I strongly disagree that this film was just a cash grab. A cash grab would be Joker and HQ doing a Bonnie and Clyde / Natural Born Killers thing (which still doesn't sound so bad when I type it out). This film is what happens when you give a director like Todd Phillips a $200 million check and say "make a sequel". The artistic intent is there, if not fully committed. The execution, mainly due to the pacing and poorly integrated musical elements, is what buries it.
Traditionally, a musical has the song parts advancing the plot, which is not the intent here in Joker 2. The musical parts only distract from the plot, they don't move it forward, which is not clever writing, and confuses both regular viewers of musicals and viewers of normal movies.
We’ll have to agree to disagree. This sequel only existed because the first film made a billion dollars and despite Phillips and Phoenix saying there would be no sequel, they changed their tune when they both got paid $20 million each.
Okay, what if the thinking behind this disaster is that this is the kind of sick joke the Joker would play on the movie studio and the audience? The only weakness in Todd Phillips's plan is he couldn't get an April 1st release date!
Thank you for such a thorough and intelligent video. This is so weird, how they went from 1B to complete bomb. It's just so perplexing. I'm not one for Schadenfreude, but honestly, if they're going that wrong, then something is off. It's as if maybe they thought they had a given hit, maybe they lost the humility needed to get additional perspectives on the script, maybe they appealed too much to woke-ism, or honestly, who knows. That's too bad because the lead actor is absolutely amazing.
