Honestly I'm one of those people that prefers to read subtitles than to hear someone trying to emulate another person's speech. It just seems disrespectful to the person speaking.
here from chihayafuru and holy smokes i didnt think it would such an accurate portrayal of the actual game! this is super interesting! too bad it's hard to play competitive anywhere other than japan.
This game would be an excellent way to help learn Japanese. The hearing and the memorization would be a great help in the listening department. It trains you to recognize and learn the words being said quickly and fluently, it really needs to be played more in Japanese learning courses.
@Pantheon theArtisinofWar I think it doesn't help to learn modern Japanese at all because those poems are so old(more than 700years before) that it differs a lot in grammars and vocabularies from modern Japanese
@@BlackGateofMordor Sounds like a boon, imagine rocking into Tokyo speaking a weird amalgamation of anime-japanese, japanglish and some nearly-ancient japanese to boot!

I searched this vid because I watched Chihayafuru and was really amazed and came to love the anime as I watched it. Japanese being abke to keep their culture alive and making anime. Hikari no Go too. Love those kind anime. This kind of games in Nihon amazes me so much. Like how intelligent are these people ?
Recommend finding and watching YOUは何しに日本へ?(Why Did You Come to Japan?) episode from Dec. 28, 2020 which covers some of that international tournament in a very fun and funny way.
Found this through looking at images for shumoku musume ("hammer girl" a yokai that's a woman who has a head simular to a hammerhead shark) and found a picture of her likeness on an edo period (i think) obake kurata card (she looked very derpy in the best way possible). Thank you shumoku musume, now i know something new ^0^
It looks like a very fun game but I react too slow and my knowledge of the language is very bare bones (and I lack knowledge of their proverbs, poetry, etc. Probably could do good at the obake one)
Im learning how to play and that’s a bet I shall train my self just for the skill of karuta it will apply to everything in my life for future I need a set
@@reenakharb2952 so there's two different card yomifuda (reading card) and torifuda (grabbing card) the reader has a full deck of yomifuda while the players have torifuda. The reader will randomly read a card from their yomifuda deck and the players have touch/grab/claim the correct corrisponding torifuda card first. So for starters, you have to memorize all 100 poems first before you play the game ^^
@@kienyawr i didn't understand 1.)How many player play this at a time ? 2 .)how many cards are used in it? 3.)in what order the cards are settled down to play ? 4.) What is the goal of reader ? 5.) What is the goal of grabber?
@@reenakharb2952 1. You can only play this game by pair (2 persons) not including the reader, but on competitions there would be more than 3 pairs on the room and one reader 2. There are 100 cards in total 3. There is no exact order bcs you need to shuffle it 4. Reader doesn't have any particular goal, they just have to read the poem for the grabbers. 5. Grabbers have to race to get the card that corresponds to the reader's card
i just now discovered this game. this is really interesting and mind blown. but i'm curious, seeing how fast they are in getting the card, just curious how they fix again the cards? do they fix it fast too and in order? i mean all cards scattered after getting it fast so what's after that
You can hit any card on the side of the card that was read. You've memorized the entire layout so you already know it's over there. It is either directly touching the card, or pushing the card fully out of the playing area.
Its funny how the example they picked for speed literally slapped the whole side away. 😂 A valid strategy but not great form, i think its usually considered a desperate move? She must have been nervous. Would have been great to also showcase how players actually listen for and differentiate the first few syllables of the poem.
I am only here because Babymetal released a deck of these and I didn't know what it was. Seems interesting but I can't read Japanese so I won't be nerding out on it.
Because you only need to directly touch the card, or push the card out of the area. You can often get their faster by hitting multiple cards, rather than trying for pinpoint accuracy. Though being accurate is a good idea.
its so funny hearing the narrator trying to emulate a teen aged girls voice.
actually made me smile
Employer: How many different voices can you make?
Narrator: Yes
Lol
Immediately looked at the comment section when he did that. Good to see my experience, wasn't solitary. It was cute

To add on top of that, it looks a hell of a lot of fun and can be incredibly intense if you know how to play.
@Pantheon theArtisinofWar I think it doesn't help to learn modern Japanese at all because those poems are so old(more than 700years before) that it differs a lot in grammars and vocabularies from modern Japanese
It'll help with sound recognition, but a lot of the grammar is ancient.
In a Japanese class I took we did a similar game using kanji cards. A word was read and we had to take the corresponding kanji before our opponent

back in elementary school in japan the teacher would have us play this game. it was so fun and crazy competitive XD
So this is like a matching game but instead of picking up the cards like a normal person you fucking slap them away.
Well, that's one way of saying it...
I came here after I saw Chihayafuru EP 1 and want to learn more about the game.
Love how i searched this up by going "Japanese card smacking game"
🤣
It's funny when the narrator pitches his voice up higher when translating the girls
I dont get it they just hit like 5 cards at once how they know they picking the right one?
Furthest card i guess...
as long as the correct card is in the ones you hit its allowed by the rules

This is so cool. I honestly thought it was a made up game for Chihayafuru. They actually are that fast in real life.
This could raise social skill better.
It seems like people are playing with the cards.
Does make friends when you play games however.
