    There is an anime about competitive Karuta called Chihayafuru. It’s a simple western introduction to the game if one is interested in how it’s played.

    I love japanese craftmanship. I've two handmade fans and a handmade ceramic mug here which a friend of me brought with him from Japan, because I wanted handmade stuff. Expensive, but beautiful pieces of art.

    The poems based on the Ogura Sanso colored paper waka written by Fujiwara Teika in the early Kamakura period at his mountain lodge in Mt. Kokura, Kyoto, are widely used as ``uta garuta,'' and have become established in later generations as the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

    Karuta sounds as Carta. Cartas is the Spanish name for the game and cards! It is like Pan, the same in Spanish... 16th and 17th Centuries connections
