If Igbos could introduce and bring in their distant relatives, African Americans, into their unique and highly successful Igbo apprenticeship system, it will take only 10 years for African Americans to become a dominant force in American economy, just as Igbos are in Nigeria

AA wouldn't be able to withstand it. As an AA woman my husband is Igbo was an apprentice. What he went through and others besides him to get his training takes allot of humility. I consider myself humble but I don't think I would be able to work someone day in and day out and they will talk to me crazy and never expect me respond. Eventually I will fire back and not give a damn. It will probably cost me my entire training. I don't think with our mind set that it would work. My husband is very good at what he studied. He is very disciplined, organized, humble and very strong.

@RebelWithoutABoss and who are you 😂? the point is if you are on the bottom of the social hierarchy you GIVE respect to those above you. Only once you've moved up have you earned respect of those who will be below you. younger people, less accomplished people etc. the attitude you just displayed is exactly the problem amongst AAs and between AAs and other groups of people. Outside of that you're not lacking the ten fingers it takes to accomplish anything.

It's due to Yoruba religions being widely popularized in the diaspora due to Lukumi/Santeria, Candomble etc. Mostly in Latin America, then found its way up north to the USA and due to Latino immigration to the USA. Given Yorubas are more public and open with their spirituality and culture than any other Nigerian ethnic group I've seen..

Yoruba culture is less "Westernised" and is very strong and distinctive. Igbo culture tends to fade away more quickly when people leave Nigeria. There are many examples of people of Yoruba origin in the Americas that retain Yoruba culture eg Brazil, Cuba, Haiti etc despite all the persecution they faced.
Before 7 October 2023 and probably after (7 October 2023) in the minds of many Christian Africans Israel is "looked up to" because of what is said in the Bible and because Israel is viewed as a "successful" country and Jewish people are viewed as extremely intelligent and rich. People want to associate themselves with "success" despite the fact that Israel is a highly racist society who look down on black peoples.
I said to a Yoruba friend of mine "if Jews were failures, would Igbos be claiming Jewish ancestry?" They would be the first to run away and deny any such connection.

One has to closely look at both cultures to fully appreciate where one culture stands when compared with the other, that will eventually bring out the answer.
The Yoruba Kingdom has always be well structured, open minded, inclusive, competitive, to this very day.
Anything that doesn't evolve, or get nurtured eventually fades away. The people of any region are usually responsible for the advancement of their culture.
Even having a closer look at various religions practiced, you will understand that Yorubas are much more open minded in their culture.
People from anywhere in the world are usually drawn to those are confident of their own existence... Through culture in general, food, dressing attire, religion and spirituality, welcoming attitude.
Look across West Africa, to the Americas...The Yoruba culture has refused to be extinguished by the European Slavers... And the modern post-slavery prejudicial systems too.

Lagos has nothing to do with it.Lagos came into existence as a major city in the 1800s with the returnees of enslaved Yoruba from Brazil. These people known as Lukumi were practising Yoruba spirituality right from Brazil and Cuba. They did not start their spirituality when they landed in Lagos. This Yoruba group, who were both Portuguese and Spanish speakers, is known as Aguda. Many of the enslaved Africans of Yoruba descendants found their way to North America. They settled in New York,Brox, and Brockley. It was from there, the Yoruba spirituality was spread and embraced by African Americans. In fact, the founder of a Yoruba town in South Carokina ,Oyotunji, was converted to Yoruba spirituality devotee while living in Neq york.Another reason was Yoruba spirituality was Spirituality of Black Panther party. Many black Panther party members practised Yoruba spirituality and had Yoruba names. Examples are Tupac mum,Chaka Khan,Diana Ross, and Steve Wonder. 95% of these people never stepped in Lagos. Fidel Castro was a Yoruba spirituality devotee. Another reason African Americans embraced it is, Yoruba are few people who are openly practising their spirituality. They are not shamed of it or claimed to be something else.

When I was a child there was a boy called Yemi, as a nickname. In the South, African people use to call out to each other by yelling "Yo, yo....some still do. Especially in the rural areas.
When there was a thunderstorm many people use to make a pallet on the floor for children. Radios and televisions were turned off. Many people did not talk on telephones during a severe thunderstorm. The children were told to be quiet, not to talk or play or make any noise "while GOD (SANGO?)is doing his work".

I think the answers are that the Yoruba culture had a larger imprint on the diaspora than the Igbo. With Ifa being practiced in places like Brazil, Cuba, United States. It’s also a major element in diaspora religions such Santeria, Candomble, Palo, and Vodou. The Yorubas are also more visible when it comes to African art and politics. So that allure draws a lot of black Americans. As for Igbo: there’s no conclusive study to show that most black Americans derived from that ethnic group. Much of the fascination with Igbo culture usually stem from them being generally more fair-skinned. Plus, some religious zealots like to claim that Igbos are descendants of biblical Hebrews.

The Igbo Odinani is the same as Judaism. So if you wish to practice Igbo spirituality, you will be practicing Judaism. It has nothing to do with religious zealots. Besides, Igbo spirituality is conservative and doesn't allow non Igbos to practice it. Priests of Igbo descent must lead Igbo religious practices and the priesthood is inherited from priestly families called Ivite in Igbo language. In ancient times Igbo don't allow intermarriage with non Igbos. So there was no way Igbos in diasporas could have practiced Igbo spirituality because they need a priest to lead them. It would not be easy for slaves to be able to practice in the new world - like observing dietary laws, not touching the dead, avoiding menstruating women, burial and mourning laws, death penalty for adultery, banishing criminals from the community, death penalty for rape and murders, training priests from generation to generation and others.

    • @Heebos
      @Heebos 8 месяцев назад +2

@blakjak38 Your friend is ignorant and probably did not grow up in Igboland and never went to his village to ask his elders who are deep into Omenani. I am not talking about Hebrew ideas. Igbo Omenani is a judaic practice that is indigenous and has nothing to do with colonial influences. Omenani is a very strict practice among Igbos in ancient times. The idea of Hebrew origin of the Igbos was propagated by the Igbo slaves in the New World who observed that Igbo culture is the same as the Jews and they proposed that it was not coincidence and that they and the Jews might be related. For your information, the Hebrew words are the same as the Igbo words with the same meaning and the clans and the villages in Igboland are named after the Houses of the 12 tribes of Israel as mentioned in the pentateuch. So it may or may not be a coincidence. For the reason why AA are not able to retain Igbo spirituality is because our spirituality is very conservative and it is not open to non Igbos. They need priest to lead them in the spirituality and these priests are hereditary among the clan of the Igbos called Ivite. The priests are trained by their fathers from childhood. In ancient times, Igbos don't intermarry with non Igbos and those who do it are excommunicated from the Igbo society forever. So slavery is not the ideal condition for Igbo slaves to practice Igbo spirituality such as dietary practices - not eating dead animals, pork, duck, snake, snails and making sure that animals are killed and allowed to bleed out, death penalty for adultery, bestiality, premarital pregnancy, rape and murder. Other Igbo Omenani include, male circumcision on the 8th day, shaving ones hairs while mourning, polygamy, not touching the dead bodies, isolation of menstruating women, training priests from generation to generation, inheriting your dead brothers wife and his children and looking after them, cleansing the land of abomination such after suicide or sexual relationship between family members, and others. So Igbo culture is Judaic and very conservative and strict from the beginning, and it has nothing to do colonial influence. Omenani has no concept of forgiveness for violation of its laws. I am sure that African Americans that want to practice Igbo Omenani don't understand what it entails until they know that they will be living the law of Moses akin to Sharia laws.

Yoruba Scholars from the 90s also did a very good job in documenting Yoruba Spirituality and selling the idea of Yoruba being the source of everything to the world. This isn't true, because even the Igbo Ukwu bronze is much older than Yoruba artefacts. The UgwuEle archeological findings proves that Igbo people have lived in Igboland since the neolithic period. We are not Hebrews. This work at UgwuEle (Mount El) is connected to an ancient Igbo goddess named Nnechukwu. She was responsible for giving people stone axes, and these stone axes were found at UgwuEle, and it dates back to the neolithic period.
Igbo scholars didn't really start documenting Igbo spirituality until around like 1997 or so. For example, After God Is Dibia by Prof. John Umeh was released in 1997. It would not be easy for slaves to be able to practice Odinani in the new world - like observing dietary laws, not touching the dead, avoiding menstruating women, burial and mourning laws, death penalty for adultery, banishing criminals from the community, death penalty for rape and murders, polygamy, animal sacrifice, inheriting the wife of your brother when he dies and taking care of his wife and his children, training priests from generation to generation, and being governed by the assembly of the elders and others. Unlike Yoruba whose spirituality can be practised by everyone and is not strict, Igbo spirituality is very strict and judaic in every aspects.

I think that what draws the 'Black' American to North African religions as opposed to the West African religions, is commonality. 'Black' Americans don't normally practice Animism, Orisha worship, Blood Sacrificing, spellwork, etc., so they would probably feel more comfortably practicing the reformed versions of the present day Northern African religions. Orthodox Christianity was in Egypt then Ethiopia - in Egypt in 1st century AD then Ethiopia 4th century AD (early 300s); The Syrian/Lebanese apostles were asked to spread Christainity to Ethiopia by the queen and so the monk sent missionaries from Alexandria Egypt to help with that; this also opened trade opportunities for Ethiopia as well. I think the Syrians were ones who spread Orthodox Christianity to India as well - there is a Syriac Malankara Orthodox church in India and Haile Selassie visited there according to author Abaraham Verghese (Indian Orthodox doctor and writer) and invited them to Ethiopia as teachers since they were amongst the well-educated . Anyway, i dont really see the relevance to west africa and other parts of Africa since they were brought through entirely different means and peoples and in totally different time periods - 1st and 4th century might as well be ancient times.

Well said. They are known as Ibo or Eboe, their envy to be Yoruba made them to change their name to Igbo like in many Yoruba groups, Igbomina, Ijebu Igbo, Ugbo in Ondo, Igbo takun in Ondo, OṣoIgbo/Osogbo et c. They are desperate to be relevant. They changed from Ibo/Yibo (colonislists spell it Eboe) to Igbo after the war in the 70s. All in their attempt to blend with Yorùbá. We call them Bush/forest people. Igbo means forest in Yoruba. They were known as ONIHOHO (naked) people too. We met them naked in the forest.
Ibo are not among the top 3 richest Nigerians. We have Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Abdul Samed Rabiu, Femi Otedola. There are silent Yoruba car manufacturers and military armoured vehicles manufacturer selling to Belarus East Europe, PROFORCE LIMITED owned by a Yoruba the only in Sub Saharan Africa. Yoruba owned airports and a Yoruba lady Eniola Aluko owned a football club in Italy. Nobody heard the news if it had been an Ibo the whole Internet will be on fire.
NORD is a made in Nigeria car manufacturer (Yorùbá) Check out NORD vehicles. Land Mark wasn't the only beach in Lagos that was affected by the Lagos to Calabar highway project. The beautiful ONIRU beach, is owned by a Yoruba and also was affected by the ongoing Highway project. You don't see the Yoruba beach owner crying or making noise. There are beautiful beaches owned by Yoruba like: Takwa bay beach, Onikan beach, Elegushi beach, Eleko beach et.c
I'm forced to correct some false narratives by Ibo who think they need to step on Yoruba to climb up. They are below and never a match to Yoruba. They are so great that they are fleeing their homeland to come to Yoruba land to live. Go to any Yoruba town you'll see them. If we are hostile like them they won't be comfortable to stay among us. Yoruba are accomodating, peaceful, generous, easy, calm and patient people but if provoked or taken for granted and disrespected you will be shown the dark side of Yoruba, silent killer, slow poison, wise strategic planner that don't forgive easily without payback first (you do me I do you, god no vex) another Yoruba adage is Iyan ogun ọdun ....
