Forget about Bernie, he sold out and backed down. He's not a true socialist, he's a sheepdog trying to herd you back to the corrupted unDemocratic party. You need a revolution and overthrow the system of capitalism, Bernie wont help you with that. No more imperialist wars, and no more support for the far right zionist government of Israel. Like Ani, I first learned this from that old treasure of unions and fights for rights, Pete Seeger. She takes this and owns it; the lyrics she adds are pretty great too.
Well it was originally a organizing song written to support mineworkers organizing unions and strikes that elevated conditions for workers all across our country. The fight continues.

I don't really care for how this song channels the revolutionary energy of workers seizing power out of self-determination into enthusiasm for voting for democrats and participating in the basic farce of American party politics, but it's a fun and an energetic tune, I must admit.
Impeach Drumpf, so the crazy Christian fundamentalist Pence can take over? Don't think so.... Americans need a revolution, cause the system is rigged and the "Democrats" are just as awefull. And btw Clinton is worse than Drumpf, just saying... The system of capitalism needs to go.
Sad to read the comments on here. So divisive, and limited to the two-party system of the US that isn't really the norm globally... I'm from an Indian city with a long history of socialism, and currently witnessing happy capitalism, partly thanks to effective opposition whose role CANNOT be undermined. Beautiful sentiments in this song, expressed timelessly.
You do realize this is a song used by those of the left, and while most democrats today are center, there are more and more Justice Democrats who are more left, and more akin to the U.K.s labor. If you look up the origin of the original song, it was about a brutal act done against workers by a pro corporate government, what both parties stand for today.

For many years I bracketed out Ani's politics because I found her to be such an extraordinary musician and presence. She still is those things, but I finally had to face the explicit implications of a song like this one. At the end of the day, I am not on her side of the ever-widening chasm that divides us. I look back in sorrow to a time when it was still just possible to overlook the polarization. But fomenting that polarization is a classic technique of the left, and it is overtly on display in this lefty anthem. Since she herself obviously does not wish to unite America, and would prefer to see the divisions deepened, I would be a fool to continue supporting her work and going to her shows. I guess I have to see her as the enemy, as she would see me.
can you acually believe that the right is not fomenting polarization? Where have you been the last couple of years. I don't think Ani would label you as the enemy, either.
you took a song about miners arming themselves to fight their bosses and their armed thugs... and made it about voting this encompasses american liberalism
RagdollRalph - I can go either way with it personally. 'boy' at least in modern speak where I live is seen a little more condescending or talking down to someone than it used to. I've heard both versions, it really doesn't change the context.
Yeah im being a little unfair, was comparing it to a live show by Pete Seeger and i even think he did away with it on one of the albums. Still a bit too upbeat for my taste but they clearly have talent :)
It’s ok to change the lyrics, but disrespectful to change them to celebrate the bosses and their paid servants in the US legislature and presidency imo.
I think I prefer Arolo Guthrie's versjon. I wonder if she thinks Venezuela and Cuba er doing fine? No free markets and capitalism to be bothered by there.
Ah, such a utopian song...the people who sang this in the 1930s did not know about the Stalinist atrocities. Even Pete Seeger apologize for his blind devotion. I'm president of the Capitalists for Ani club, but it only has one member.
O'boy sure, if you're a moron. You think more neo liberalism would make things better? Stop watching mainstream news, because that's all propaganda for the corporate empire. You need a revolution, no politician can save America. Capitalism has to go.
Randall Beggs: What specific policies/issues does Kamala support which you are in favor of? What has she done (besides platitudes to try and placate the 99%) to help the working class?
Nice playing, but the lyrics are lame. You're making it about bloody voting and bourgeois democracy, when the original was sung rifle in hand precisely against that very same corrupt bourgeois democracy.
This should be played live at the Bernie rally in October in DC. I'll be there in my teamsters shirt!
This comment just made my heart hurt for what could have been. :'(

More relevant that ever! Thank you Ani DiFranco & Melissa Ferrick, BIG FAN here!!!
Relevant but naive. It turns out that the people who she thought were on the side of the people were not.
this is fantastic! I was right in the front row........ THANKS FOR THIS MAGNIFICENT FLASHBACK!!!

Ironic how relevant this is again 💛💙💜💚❤

Yes to labor solidarity and the fight for socialism, no to the big money corporate political parties, the democrats and republicans!
Great lyrics!
Wow!!
made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. SHout it from the rooftops!
God this the best of the evolution of a labor song. Great work!!!

This version is kinda liberal
No kidding comrades
Ummmm the original is liberal. Unions. Go read a history book. Christ!
you noticed that, did you?
fuckin libs
You don't say....
Pete Seeger wrote this as a workers union song. Pretty shitty to speak his name then completely change his message.
Pete Seeger didn't write this song. Florence Reece did and it's the tradition of the song to change the lyrics.
Jess makes a very good point, take the L kyle.

Capitalism creates wealth for a few. It needs a counterbalance to distribute it
Is nothing sacred when even this song can be used and butchered by the Democrats?
Sami El-Sayed this had always been a LIBERAL song so no it is not being used by democrats
Zephyr Nace-Beach actually, this is a socialist / union song. It has little to do with liberals.
You do realize this is a song used by those of the left, and while most democrats today are center, there are more and more Justice Democrats who are more left, and more akin to the U.K.s labor. Left /center is looking pretty goddamn good right now. They don't bust unions, Repug operatives do.

How I wish these words were true. Sadly, they are proven not to be.
I guess that's a bit unfair, she is telling the truth just disappointed that our society doesn't agree.
The working class needs to destroy more for justice. History proves this to be true.
A tad neo-liberal for my further lefty tastes.

She litteraly re-wrote the lyrics of this song to be less radical and your accusing her of leftist polarization
What she's saying is you have a choice to move towards the collective benefit or that of the few. You choose.
I doubt that she’d see you as an enemy. That’s on you
Ruined a good working man’s song. Sounds great but these lyrics are almost as unpatriotic as it gets.
Or working woman’s for those who throw a fit about that. Mankind includes male and female for those that don’t know.
How is feminism going to call an end to war?
Because feminism is about equality. And war is about dominance. The two are opposites.
you took a song about miners arming themselves to fight their bosses and their armed thugs... and made it about voting this encompasses american liberalism
I thought they fudged it upp, why would you remove ’boys’ from the chorus, and its way too fast, lost all the emotion.

Disrespectful to change the lyrics. And normally I like Ani.

I think I prefer Arolo Guthrie's versjon. I wonder if she thinks Venezuela and Cuba er doing fine? No free markets and capitalism to be bothered by there.
The US is not a free market. The govt actively supports big business with tax breaks, loopholes, and union busting laws... that's what makes them big.
