Canon's Hi8 Camcorders - A1 Digital, L1, and L2

  • ‪@WaybackRewind‬We review Canon's A series (A1, A1 Mark II, A1 Digital) and the L Series, (L1 and L2). These were Canon's only Hi8 Camcorders produced from 1989 to 1994. They were innovative in their design and also included the first camcorders with removable lenses. Were they hits or just weird examples of a dead end? We examine that question. #canon #camcorder #video #camera #lens

      I hope it was obvious how much I love these cameras. I foreshadowed a future video when I said you could buy a dozen A1 Digitals and none would work. 😀 Thanks for watching.

    I found a L2 on Facebook market place and the guy bought it back in the 90s and ended up never really needing it, it had been sitting in storage ever since and it is perfect

      Nice find. I've found the L2s are in much better shape than the L1s. I think they changed capacitor suppliers. Virtually all L1s are dead. Thanks for watching.

      The biggest problem on these are the electrolytic caps. I replaced 1000's in the past. They seem to be okay when used constantly but people used to tell me that they put it away for a year and when they came to use it, a fishy smell and loads of faults.

      @alanstarkie2001 I had all my caps replaced and it worked for a couple of years before it failed again. I think it's finally dead for good. Thanks for watching.

    Have only ever seen promotional lit on these.
    Sony seemed to rule Hi8 way back when…
    I bought my Canon GL1 for $2400 new - big investment. Good imagery, good accessories - never made any real money from it.
    Still have it!

    • @WaybackRewind

      The L2 I could make tapeless but it still works. The A1 won't light up so it's hopeless.

    Thanks for your content! Super fun channel! Could you please do a comparison video between your L2 with your canon xl1s? I’m mostly curious in the differences for capturing light. It seems like the L2 is more sensitive to light and therefore can achieve higher shutter speeds in the same light compared to the XL1s. A comparison indoors and outdoors would be awesome! Cheers! :)

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. That would be an interesting compare of Two interchangeable lens standard definition cameras.
      I have to deconfigure my XL1S from tapeless (which only made it worse) and look at both as they perform to tape.
      I appreciate the suggestion and love hearing thoughts and ideas from the viewers.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@WaybackRewind I just stated my journey with the l2 this year and would like to know, how long could my l2 last if I use it regularly? So far it’s given me mild problems like the lens having a miscommunication with the sensor and the digital effects draining the battery really fast. Will the capacitors still rot even if I use it weekly? And are there any repair men in the states that could repair it if it goes bad. I’ve had a hard time finding someone.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind  Месяц назад +1

      Those are excellent questions.
      My battery drains very fast as well, even though it's only 4 years old. I need to find a solution for that. Lenses do tend to go bad, but you can maybe use the lenes from the bad ones?
      As for the capacitors, I don't know if there is a way to make them last longer. Maybe being in a cool place helps. As for repairs I had my A1 repaired, but that was 30 years ago. Most of the people with those skills are retired. I think you have to just accept that at some point these cameras are gone. Like the A1, none of them work at this point.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind  Год назад

      I try not to buy non-working cameras. Unless you have the skills to fix it yourself, it's not worth repairing, in my opinion. I doubt it's something simple. One leaking cap is enough to render it not working. Trick is knowing which one. Thanks for watching.

    Your channel has potential but the random women in the thumbnails aren't portraying a genuine image since the viewer feels clickbaited as soon as they notice the narrator has a male voice. I'd also suggest using more transparent/visually engaging backdrops and cutting the amount of text on the thumbnail by at least 40%. I guarantee you will see an increase in views if you do that
