During my last semester of college, I bought a 1986 RX-7. I really loved driving that car, especially because you could achieve higher speeds in lower gears without coming close to redlining. However, the engine eventually had issues, and I traded it in and bought an suv, which was more practical for where I lived after college. I had a college friend who had an RX-7 of the previous generation to mine, and his was a speed demon. He and his friends were street racers, so he had his highly modified. This thing was so damn fast, especially accelerating from a stop! I wish I had his car, but he had sold it during the summer before I bought mine.
@Anthony, it was worst than that, I had it in Puerto Rico where there were massive pot holes back in the day so I had to drive slow anyway 😂. Still. It was a cool car
I had an RX2 and an RX3, and both got about 27 mpg traveling above 60. If I went below 50, I could only get 22. I discovered that the faster you went, the better your mileage. There was a theoretical limit, but there was no power curve. It was a straight line up.
I had 2 RX2s 2dor auto and 4dor standard, fast cars would out run much larger cars. The auto got about 18 mpg and the standard got about 21 mpg. The rotarys fire like a 6 cylinder, 3 times for each rotation of the rotors. A lot of people scraped the engines because they did not keep the oil topped up, the engines were designed to consume oil, and the oil system was also part of the cooling system. LOVED THE CARS. All cars have differences. I own an RX-8, but the oil has never been an issue. Mileage is unpleasant, but does not seem to change much no matter how it is driven. Driving it hard is really the best value. I sat in a new Supra, but it is much smaller has turbo lag and an automatic. The Rx-8 has one unique ability - turn in. The motor responds more quickly than a piston motor due to the proximity of the throttle to the intake port and low rotational mass. Steering with the throttle is more fun than any car that I have ever driven. My tiny mother in law sits in the back and likes it better than the BMW 440 coupe due to the back door ( we tried it at the dealer). So I hold on to the RX-8 out due to my fear that I will miss handling and utility. Any suggestions?
Gas piggy, yes! I love my RX 8 ❤ The suicide door is awesome and it's a beautiful baby. It's a 2007 and only have 71,000miles on it. Thanks for loving my car Scotty!
A buddy of mine had an RX7--fun car, used oil...burned gas like an oil well fire but it was fun. Made it to around 80,000 miles and the seals went. Seems cold intake charge and burning hot exhaust blasting several inches away causes warping of the cases, blown seals etc. A very fun engine to spin up but long term reliability is dicey, mileage is horrible and you need to keep an eye on your oil level. All that oil burning does not give much love for the cat convertor either. I can see them being used as a small, light weight power generator hybrid thing as emergency power backup, they are very light but overall they went away because they needed to go. Two strokes went away also...the world moves on. It was fun while it lasted!
My friend’s brother had one of these. He drove it like a maniac. He ended up selling it because it started to fall apart because he abused it very badly

*_I have literally seen so many videos with a fully built 2-rotor engine running 6 seconds at the drag strip..._* A 4-cylinder can't even go that fast LOL
The Suzuki rotary bike was called the RE5. It was sales disaster for Suzuki. It was a ok bike but, It just looked weird. The engine looked like pump. Not a regular engine with cylinders and fins like everyone was used to at the time.
Scotty was right Mazdas newest hybrid uses a single rotor dorito in the cx50(70?). Do hope my rx8 increases in value, id never sell but all of them are used and increase in miles. Makes me wanna buy a 2nd low mileage one and keep it stock and mint!!
Can confirm rotary are amazing engines, but rx-7 were way better, once those rx-8 apex seal issue aside, upgrading to a high torque starter, swapping clutch pedal or rebuilding adjuster setup, spark plug and wires and avoiding flooding the engine and these are really great cars. Unfortunately I've seen winter cold starts immobilize rx-8 due to engine flooding three times in a single season, this is common during changing of the seasons from multiple owners. Freeway is very smooth and the chassis is so capable I have a special spot for rx-8

Love my Rx-8. It is fun as hell!!!
In my country some people put 2t in gas tank and some just swap 2jz/2zz
In Japan they made a Holden Kingswood with a rotary motor Holden was a General Motors product look it up
*_I have literally seen so many videos with a fully built 2-rotor engine running 6 seconds at the drag strip..._* A 4-cylinder can't even go that fast LOL
No your right they are in the 5s
@@colinmunro7337 yep!
@CT is infant grade content now 10,000hp,your as funny as the v Tec bros😂
The Suzuki rotary bike was called the RE5. It was sales disaster for Suzuki. It was a ok bike but, It just looked weird. The engine looked like pump. Not a regular engine with cylinders and fins like everyone was used to at the time.
Scotty was right Mazdas newest hybrid uses a single rotor dorito in the cx50(70?). Do hope my rx8 increases in value, id never sell but all of them are used and increase in miles. Makes me wanna buy a 2nd low mileage one and keep it stock and mint!!
video didnt start , just saw the seats , my god i miss my rx8
Keep it coming, Scotty!
oh boy i had one of these bad boys back in 2008, gas and oil guzzling little bastards. BUT! they were sure a lot of fun to drive tho.
Rarely see those late RX8s , mostly see the early ones
04 6 speed bridge port, soon to be turbo charged, fun AF
I love the RX7 FD out of all the RX series
Yes, with turbos.
Or just one big one.
I had a 1988 RX7 .
Had the usual problem with the Apex seals leaking but it was a fun car .
@@jayhockley8841 at least ya enjoy your time with it before ya gave it up🙂
I thought it was gonna be an '07 Camry 😅 Cheers from Toronto, Canada!
Yeah probably the only oilburning camry
That white BMW in the background will eventually be in the hands of Scotty one day to mock the hell out of it.
Go drive one and then you understand why people like them :)
@@Manakuski rather a mazda over a bmw ;), steering feels similar and motors and expenses are cheaper. only downfall no 6 cylinder with legit power or rwd :/
@@goinbananas7606 RX8 and MX-5 are both nice. I'll rather drive a BMW every day though. Here in europe. They're nicer and always have warranty anyway so who cares if something breaks (they always get fixed free and dealerships have capable mechanics here).
I wouldn't buy an old BMW either though.
@@Manakuski i had a speed6 it was awesome, i have a mazda 3 daily driver and honestly its not "fun" but the steering in mazda's are something of a similar heritage of bmw, its not floppy you feel you control the car kinda, it'd be nice if mazda made more rwd vehicles but they are still a "smaller" company and still readily supply to different groups of individuals. also in canada, they are coming stock with turbo's only 230 hp 280 ftlb of torque pretty sure, but still that will make them more enjoyable here atleast.
@@Manakuski dodge has the lightest weirdest steering ive ever felt, so does honda, its like you arent even connected to the car. the tighter steering although rough on bumps for the mazda, gives you an actual feeling of driving the car not the car driving with you type of thing
One thing to say, I love my rx-8. Thats all
Same!
the guy urinating in the gas tank is classic
Good afternoon Scotty hope you and yours are doing well and your vacation is progressing wonderfully, you drive that car and speed you better know a good bail bondsman!
fell into one of these, and absolutely love it!
Sucker born every minute..
Sports cars sure do sell, that's why you see a hellcat every 30 seconds. The new Corvette, the Z, the supra - if Mazda made a modern rotary turbo to compete with the Supra and Z, they would sell a ton.
Triangles. Triangles! Triangles!
There's always a fire burning in a rotary, they run hot!
And then blow up.
255 hp out of 1.3L. I am already impressed.
had to go back a couple of times when Scotty said "suicide doors" just to enjoy it hahaha, good man Scotty, demonetised but you made sure to say it anyways hahaha, so good!
Just love that inset with the surprised/scared cat! Makes me laugh every time!
I agree the Mazda RX-8 is going to rise in price.
I love mine, I won't get rid of it
The Wankel engine was originally designed as a compressor, N.S.U. used one on a 50cc moped to supercharge it.
Very interesting
Another great video my Scotty Kilmer love the auditory love the delivery America really does need Scotty Kilmer 😻😻😹
Love my 04. 11C and enjoy it on the weekend.
Jet engines: am I a joke to you?
These cars are badass!
16 mpg and 16 MPB (miles per barrel of oil).
....prices will surely move up now after this video. They always do after someone does a positive utoob review . A camping stove doubled in price yesterday after a positive review.
. Small wankels for weed wackers and RC planes might work but not sure for chainsaws cos of the high revs .
My Rx8 might be unreliable and expensive but it is so much fun that I don't mind
The problem with that model is when you do a very short distance drive and you come back and jump into the vehicle it gets flooded out and it won't restart until you pull all the spark plugs out and blowout each cylinder
Isn’t that a problem only when it’s cold?
