I like that you say you’re going to “interpret” things on the page because that’s how I view it. I’m in charge!

This was an excellent tutorial! You are very good at explaining your techniques in a way that is not only instructive, but fun and relaxing to watch. You are an amazing colorist, and I would love to see more videos like this, where you show us how you do different things, like other types of backgrounds, blending, shading, how to use different mediums, etc…I would also love to see your collection of supplies, and how you store everything (which is something I’m always looking for ideas on). Thanks for a great video, as always!

When I don't know where to start, especially in the Mythographic books, I like to get the background filled in because it helps me to see what's what in the picture. If I'm not sure if something is part of the image or the background I wait to color it, and usually once I have all or most of the background filled in I can see better to decide what it is. If I'm still not sure then I will just guess and color it like whatever is around it whether it's the background or part of the image. Another thing I do is find parts of the image that I know what color combo I'm going to use for it. So a lot of times I start with coloring grass, leaves, sky, etc. Getting some color on the page helps me to get over that initial hesitation. And when I'm not sure what colors I should use on other things in the image, once I have the grass and/or leaves colored it can help me choose colors based on what kind of greens I've used. So if I've used bluey greens or yellow greens, I can decide what colors look best with them. And don't get hung up on tiny details. Not everything has to have shading. There's nothing wrong with using fine liners or gel pens on those tiny details! Give yourself that permission! I mentioned that because it's something I've struggled with! And put your supplies to use! I'm guilty of having a lot of different kinds of supplies but using the same thing every time. And if I want to experiment but I'm scared I'll mess up my book, if it's a book that is still being sold, I just tell myself that I can always buy another copy! 😁

One way to "cheat" if you don't know how to do translucent or see through items is to color it in with a lighter shade of the color behind it and I like to go over it with one of my Gansai Tambi opal watercolor paints. If you don't have those paints just use something similar. Anything that is shimmery, sparkly, iridescent, etc but is also see through and not opaque should work. I also use the Faber Castell iridescent gelatos.
