      Bruce - any chance of a new instrumental solo album? Some of the tracks off the last couple albums have been mind bogglingly good. Giving Up The Ghost, Akiko, Leap of Faith - these tracks are amazing at so many levels. You really know how to craft some outstanding music.

    My best friend from high school and I had the privilege of meeting Paul & Bruce in '85 in Hollywood. My friend and I traveled out to Hollywood for the summer so he could attend GIT. I was able to take a guitar lesson from Bruce and fortunate to have him get the band to autograph the Street Lethal vinyl album for me. Will never forget going to watch them play on the strip at the Whiskey or maybe it was the Roxy or Troubadour. A memory I'll always cherish!

    Big, big, big “LIKE” for this video! (and ALL of your videos!) I was blessed to attend GIT in ‘89-‘90 and Bruce’s ‘open counseling’ sessions were by far my favorite and most memorable times that year. I even got to sub for Bruce’s regular guitar tech for a show at the Troubador that year. Unforgettable experiences. Your way of demonstrating and explaining even complex techniques and applied theory is spectacular. Thank you for sharing all this cool stuff!!!

    This video is excellent. I always loved Bruce's playing (probably more than Paul's), only because of how he combined shred and blues. Props to you for being able to play those licks so fluidly. Corabi and Bruce were a great combination with that Scream album. Where there was more blues, but always had hints of shred in there. Great vid!

    My first exposure to Bruce's playing actually wasn't with Racer X, but instead with The Scream. That "Let It Scream" album just smoked with massive-sounding guitars, bass and drums. Credit where it's due to Eddie Kramer for his excellent production work on that album. Bruce's solos on that record were a tasty mix of shred, bluesy feel and vibrato.

    I'm so glad I came upon your channel. Amazingly, I'd never heard of Bruce Bouillet. He's phenomenal. I like Paul Gilbert as much as anyone and his technical ability is something to be highly respected as well as his writing but I have to say, after listening to Bruce for the last 3 hours, I like his music better. He too is a technical wizard but what's more impressive to me is his phrasing and harmonic/melodic content. He played a lick or phrase that caught my attention more times than I can remember. I can hear him using harmonic minor and melodic minor modes so creatively. Thank you so much for turning me on to his music. I can't wait to start ripping off his licks...

    • @LateNightLessons

      This is the kind of message and feedback that I LOVE getting.
      Thank you so much and it makes me feel great to expose some folks to a few lesser-known players.
      Bruce really is a monster and while I'm a HUGE Paul Gilbert fan, I'm also an equally as big Bouillet fan.
      When I learned that Paul taught Bruce at GIT and then gave him a gig in Racer X when he needed a guitarist blew my mind when I first heard that story and learned the tale.
      I was like "Paul taught him and then EMPLOYED him? No way. That's too cool!"
      : )
      Thanks again and ROCK ON \m/

    So good to hear someone talk with such passion about this amazing solo of Bruce's and his playing in general. I remember listening to this back in the day and feeling like the only person in the world who appreciated just how good it was! Your playing is immense, I discovered you recently after watching your John Norum video. I'll definitely be subscribing! Another amazing guitarist of this era who I think is desperately underrated is Mark McGee from Vicious Rumors. Check out his solo on the track Children, sublime!

    I thought it was a shame he was overshadowed by Paul. Paul's a beast,but Bruce is very accomplished in his own right. I loved the Scream album....showed some blues-hard rock flavor on that. But both Bruce and Paul were SCARY in RacerX. Thanks for this lesson David \m/

      I think/feel that Paul had an opportunity and it just happened the way it happened.
      It wasn't quite the way it was originally planned, much like The Scream and John leaving for the Motley Crue gig.
      If everything had played out differently, Bruce would be well-known and as Paul's equal.

    I think of that lick as more Phrygian Dominant. Gm harmonic minor starting on D. It fits perfect and Paul and Bruce were big Yngwie fans back then so it seems appropriate. Just my 2 cents, although Paul was my teacher back in '85 when I lived in LA, I used to got see Racer X all the time back then. Great times. Cool lessons BTW.

    Dig this lesson!! Really good stuff!! I saw Racer X at the Omni, in Oakland Ca., which is the clip you use for that first arpeggio. Great show!(I have pictures of it somewhere) Also got to see The Scream in Austin Tx. The cool thing is that Bruce’s tone on The Scream album still sounds like his solo tone on “Live Extreme Volume 2”.

  • @JohnDoe-pq8yw
    @JohnDoe-pq8yw 5 лет назад +1

    The string skipping shapes are Paganini inspired. The string skipping is the only way to play them. For example, a two octave major arpeggio would be 1(1)-3(1)-5(2)-1(2)-3(2)-5(2)-1(3). Paganini skips notes in this arpeggio. So it is 1(1)-5(1)-3(2)-1(3). String skipping is necessary. Tapping can work as well. Paganini rips through all the inversions like this as well. I can barely play them, the are freaking hard. Thanks for the video, Bruce is a player I will never forget. I stole some his stuff and played it at blues jams in Stormy Monday on those changes in that tune. The old guys I was playing with at the time almost had heart attacks!!!! The 80's were an amazing decade for hard working guitarist. So much fun!!!!

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  5 лет назад

      Thanks so much John!
      I used to date a classical violinist and she and I would constantly jam and trade notes. She was really into Paganini and Bach and we'd always get stuck on some wicked arpeggio or melodic line and have "near-arguments" about it.
      I hate to admit it, as I don't really miss the relationship, but the musical jams and music-related arguments were wonderful!
      : )
      Take care!

    We grew up in the same time period and apparently dig all the same stuff. This is so cool and I'm from the Midwest as well. Sure do miss the old days. Glad I found your channel. I already said it, but check out Harry Cody (Shotgun Messiah) Second Coming album. He is in my top 5 guitarists and your style is similar.

    I have always been of the mindset that Bruce's solo from the live album was so much more enjoyable than Paul Gilbert's. No disrespect to Paul, I mean, come on! But Bruce's musicality is just off the charts here. Flawlessly executed!

      @@LateNightLessons no disrespect to Bruce but I prefer your playing of his licks. The live footage had that nervous overly aggressive feeling.

    Loving this - Any possibility of doing 3 Gary Moore licks - not the blues stuff - that's been done to death but some of his "metal era" stuff - please thanks - keep up the great work

    Bruce's Solo has always been one of my most favorite guitar pieces ever. It's right up there with Eruption. The only guitar solo I like better is from the Hear N Aid - Stars song, but that is like 20 people so, yeah... 😎
