God I love the way the characters talk in this game

Yeah it's a bit hilarious how that plays out, more evidence everyone but Vaan should have been the protagonist. I don't even dislike Vaan but if the protag was anyone else it'd probably flow better.
Vaan does seem like an afterthought. But, from I understand, Reks lived long enough to corroborate the Empire's version of events so the people of Dalmasca would believe it. It's unfortunate the game only infers that rather than makes it explicit. The game has gotten better with age for me- I can actually kind of appreciate Vaan's role as the intimate face of Rabanastre's people to Ashe. He wants revenge so, in her mind, her people want revenge. He is able to let go of his hatred after being around Larsa, so she tries to do the same. She keeps looking to him for cues.
The scene plays out incredibly awkward. Gabranth hardly acknowledges Vaan. But, in a roundabout sort of way, there's something weirdly appealing about the idea that Gabranth killed Reks and, two years later, is about to kill Vaan only for another judge to stop him.
You can literally take out all Vaans dialogue and it would be the exact same scene. Even when Vaan talks to Gabranth, he doesnt respond back.

Thats because he was an afterthought he was added late in development when the game switched directors. Balthier was the original protaganist.
Simply by deciding to seek more in life instead of just dwelling on his losses, Vaan gave an example for Ashe to follow. He saw illusions from the nethicite just as she did, meaning that the Occurria were considering him as a backup. That’s how similar his and Ashe’s motivations were. But by growing enough that they gave up on him, he simultaneously helped prevent the creation of a new nethicite-wielding villain.
Vaan’s is a small role which will never be known in Ivalice’s history books. But this is what makes him living proof that history is made of more than just the big and flashy events.
Couldn't have said that any better. So many people don't like him and I've never been able to understand why, especially taking everything you've written into consideration.
Dude, I didn't even think about how Vaan maybe can be choosen as Nethicite wielder. Thanks for telling us, now I quite understand how it works.
He has a niche role in the story, by becoming Ashe’s “advisor”. Each time Ashe decides to do something stupid and selfish, Vaan is the first to call her out. “Don’t interrupt me Vaan” is a lot deeper than you think. He (and the people) are going to bear Ashe’s decision in the end, if she were to use the neticite’s power.
Both Vaan and Penelo are not a typical hero or protagonist in the game since both of them are just civilian that caught up in the war against Archades. However, both of them are not simply following Ashe just for the sake of adventure but because they know how war become catalyst of revenge. Vaan initially hated Basch for killing Reks since he only knew it after war has finished but he changed his mind after escaping from Nalbina Fortress, he sees that hatred only breeds destruction and knowing that Basch himself also a victim in that cycle, he decided to forgive him rather mulling over it. This also applies to Ashe as Vaan see herself as a victim to the cycle of hatred, Vaan wanted to prevent Ashe from falling into that cycle but failed to do so since her mind already driven by hatred since her husband Rasler passed away because of war. In the journey until the party reached Pharos or Ridorana, every single person that help Ashe always tried to advise her to relinquished the hatred and put an end to it as Larsa always tried to persuade her for peace, Reddas reminds her for the destruction of Nabudis because of the power she seeks and Vossler lost of faith to the cause because of his powerlessness.
Vaan, Ashe, and Reddas have come to terms with the past, and Gabranth doesn't know how to take it...it's kind of powerful. How he keeps trying to goad Ashe, and is so taken aback by the responses he gets from both Ashe and Vaan that he has to pause before just falling back on violence.

Also survived a blast that took out Reddas and the entire top of the tower. Which probably means he got ejected and probably fell quite a distance down.

Gabranth is the greatest character in this game imo, and one of the best FF antagonists to date. A really complex dude with motives not entirely evil. He steals every scene he's in, amazing voice actor too

I can appreciate your opinion, but I feel Dr Cid is the best. Virtually everyone thinks he's crazy but in truth he's probably the most sane in all of Ivalice. Is he a good guy, good God no. But his overall intention is noble in seeking to grant the world freedom from predestined fate. Plus he has the best maniacal cackle in any game!

Honestly Gab and Zecht and Basch and even Balthier carried the story. For my being my older brother and I both served in the infantry in the Marines in Afghan...we both came back and he's in prison I'm going for my PhD....he always used to drunkenly say I was a privileged college boy...he came from the same adoptive background. He was a volunteer so was I. We have a better relationship now even though he has two years left in his sentence....him being sober finally got him to ask when he gets out...can we hit go get an ice cream cone....imo when Basch bests his brother....he says it respectfully not Gabranth. "Then let this end...........Noah."

And yes, I know Ashe, Basch & Bathlier are the true Main Protagonists, but it feels much more like a anime, Because vaan is chilling with all this wise Supuriors. They created him just for the Protagonist FF Clishee, but created a much better, ABSOLUTE UNIQUE Feeling.

Wow I really liked the "buckethead voice" from the Judges, it sounds very authentic and bold move to use at that time
12 honestly feels like the most lived in of any final fantasy game I've played. The world building and story telling are truly extraordinary in my opinion
The best entry and the last true FF games that not too edgy, not too rushed and polished to the finest. 14 is different game but 12 had a better script.

@@JameyMcQueen 😂 I feel like I'm the only one who got Vaan as his favorite character and I always play as him, he is not even annoying or bad character at all, he is actually relatable well developed just a normal teenager you expect him to be and who is trying to understand this world and find a meaning for his life, but as normal person that surrounded by important popular people who got major roles and some that are even trying to protect a whole country and face wars, yeah of course he is not gonna be the main focus and it's not even his fault, also the world of FFXII and the soundtracks are so beautiful.. I wish I could go to Eastern desert or Bujerba the sky city or Rabanastre or Archades or the Jahara village and visit many different places

(this also applies to enemies that can do combos, including a couple superbosses with an insane amount of HP and whose standard attacks have a 5% chance of just killing you outright)

Venat is a traitor to a house of tyrants.
You also use fallen angels and the most of the main cast is motivated by revenge and personal grudges. Obviously the villains are bad, but the main characters are getting there.

Vaan is the main protagonist. Everything started from his actions. Dont make the mistake of thinking that bc someone is young or not as important as others in the story that they dont have a major part. Watch through the story again. Ask yourself why Vaan was the only person other than Ashe to see the Occurians wraith the first time.

@@coolguy02536 back when I first played this game as a senior in high school, I was one of those people. Watching it now, I obviously had no idea what I was talking about. The dialogue is incredible and the characters are far and away better than 99% of rpgs out there.

@@silkil7100 it's a part of Ivalice Alliance settings, from FF Tactics series and then FF12. Sadly the spinoff sequel that supposed to continue after Revenant Wing with Basch as the main character have been cancelled. Fun fact, the man that directing FF12 also create Vagrant Story before leaving the game because of health issue, after his departure developer decided to put Yiazmat to honor him.

this was one of those rare boss battles that truely frightened me. I was low leveled by the time I got here, barely made it out alive against Gabranth, got my rear handed to me by Dr Cid..... AND THEN HE SUMMONED FAMFRIT.
Meanwhile I use Balthier and summoned Adrammelech to upped the playfield.

Bro you must have gotten zodiac age it's amazing, more secret bosses you get to choose your own class and shit. And you get to put dialogue in Japanese so you don't have to hear vaans ugly voice actor
No other voice acted FF game will come close to XII. It's truly incredible. It's not cringe-worthy like X-2 or the XIII series could be (not that I hated those games), and it's truly poetic and enthralling.
JRPGs with a Western feel hit that sweet spot, IMO.
I would say there's no better scripted FF game, though Type-0 has solid writing as well, and great voice-acting to boot.
XII does have some direction mistakes with voice-acting though. Lines read in ways that don't make sense until you stop to think of how it was meant to be read.

12 is a bit weird. The writing and dialogue is some of the best of the FF series while the battle system is so bizarre to work with and summons being absolutely useless in the original game release.

Vaan does seem to feel a bit inconsequential, but he is still the one who created this party and helped Ashe realize herself, he doesn't deserve to be hated by the community, he's just a commoner in the battle of royalty, the voice of all those below.

That would be because Vaan's character was actually rewritten _at least_ twice over the course of production. He used to be rugged and world-weary, then he was changed to be a more touchy-feely character, then they tweaked him again to be energetic and a little bit of a dope due to the Japanese VA that was cast for him. Given his changing personality and really vague orphan backstory, it's hard to really establish him as a character among them. Especially when he gives up on the only halfway-concrete motivation his story had (avenging his brother Reks), albeit it does indeed move along Ashe's arc. If you think about it, he really does feel swept up in all of this, almost sacrificed to the others' stories. Same thing with Penelo. I wouldn't have had a problem if they were, say, major NPCs, but they wield the same immense power as the others and just...kinda stand there.
Gabranth, Doctor Cid, and Balthier's voice actors are amazing.
I enjoyed playing as a side character like vaan watching a story play out. Really is one of a kind

Gabranth: "I... I'm going to need to you be a little more specific."
I love how gabranth is just power walking towards vaan, about to cleave him in half and nobody steps in to save him accept reddas! 😂 I have a theory that the group find vaan so annoying they were willing to let gabranth off him!
Lol vaan would definitely be able to defend him self.
Keep that theory to yourself, usually characters don’t have their weapons they equipped during the cutscenes and pretty much each character is overpowered.. just look at their quicknnings, Van would be to defend himself even barehanded, they all have defeated so many huge monsters already at this point

What is done is done, the thing Balthier tells Basch quite early in the game. It's the point of Vaan's inclusion in the game, which Ashe finally understands here.

Was the king of Dalmasca involved with the fall of Nabudis? I really wish the SE sequel overlords could have focused more on Basch and Gabranth, since they had a history.
As much as I love Vaan, it just didn't feel like he belonged in these events. However, one reason being, him only to understand what being a sky pirate would entail.

I don't get it. How does destroying the sun cryst make the gods not able to command history's weave? You know they will just make another or use more drastic measures with another chosen saint. They could intervene in the same way Venat does too.

So it looks like they wanted to make sure the empire and Venat couldn't pervert the tool of the gods.
Actually, if you read into it, the Occuria believe they are the one to guide man's hand and control their future. The items like the Sun Cryst are things they give to man and entice them to follow their path. The plot with the manufacted nethicite and Cid's fervor is that the stones are made BY the hands of man instead of being given to them. The entire plot set by Vayne is to give the power of man back to them and in destroying the tools of the Occuria, their sway can no longer affect the path of man.
