Actually, while both of these players are good backs and priest was one of the best ever in his prime, priest only ran a 4.7( for context, that’s slower than ANY of the top 24 backs in fantasy over the last 5 years. So 120 seasons and all were at least 4.68. In other words, it is extremely slow for an NFL back..it’s still very fast haha) while Raheem runs a 4.32 and is by far the fastest RB in the NFL who actually gets carries, and is faster than any of those 120 top 24 fantasy seasons over the last 5 years( McFadden and Woodhead being tied for the fastest at 4.33). Its super rare for bullet fast RBs to have success in the NFL. We have seen very few. Most all successful RBs at the pro level run between 4.4 and 4.6 but of course there are a few outliers. I’m not sure why more 4.3 guys aren’t good in the NFL at the RB position, but Raheem is, and in this way I would say he isn’t similar to priest. With allllll of that being said? 40 speed doesn’t mean that much, so if you have other traits I’m not thinking of as to why they are similar you could be onto something. I mean of course we can’t say that just ANYONE can run a 4.4 or better by improving their technique, you have to have natural speed to begin with, BUT I totally get your overall point and I will have to agree with you here as you clearly are well informed. I have brought up the 40 a lot, but as I said legit in the last week I have really been diving into players 40 times and their 100 times and then comparing that to how fast they actually appeared to be on the field. The initial hypothesis I stated to begin my studying was that “40 time is NOT a consistent indication of who will be the most successful game breaking running backs producing many big runs”. I’m glad it eventually led me to you, your perspective has helped a lot. I guess when you say tracks are a terrible metric, you don’t just mean 100, you also mean the 40? Yes? Because you went on to say thrbthing about 4.7 to 4.3 and technique...it totally makes sense to me why top end speed is what truly matters. In football, it isn’t like you are running in a straight line and starting off blocks and having perfect technique, etc, I get that. It’s more about: how fast are you going to be once you get to your highest gear: is that going to be fast enough so that you won’t be caught by any DBs once you get into the clear. Obviously many many many of the best backs we have ever seen have NOT been world class sprinters in terms of their times, BUT I think the data DOES show that fast guys on the track are also going to be fast on the field, but they aren’t the ONLY guys that are going to be fast on the field. There is a reason that we don’t see many 4.8 RBs have much of any success at the pro level. You clearly have to be a certain level of fast to even have the chance to be a top NFL RB, BUT being the fastEST is NOT on its own going to make you any better than anyone else. In the study I found, 86 out of the 120 players to finish in the top 24 for RB production in each of the last 5 seasons ran between 4.40 and 4.57. I also was able to find 100 times for a lot of those players, and it often was consistent. These guys who were running at least 4.6, they also had had some trakc success running somewhere below 11 seconds, most of the ones I looked up had run at least a 10.6. Of course I know!!I get it! It doesn’t mean much! But I did find some consistency that is all I am saying. Of course, your speed on these events can be imrpvoed, just like your speed on the field can be improved! While you mentioned technique being huge for track speed, well adding muscle and working on certain types of muscle areas on the body and focusing on certain drills can also improve your speed. CMC specifically talked about that when he was being interviewed early last year, I believe after the Jacksonville or AZ game. He had had success in many areas in his first 2 years, but it was clear that he had worked hard to reach a new level of ( as you said) top end speed, and he insinuated that he had improved his 40 time. So the two do seem to correlate. In regards to Priest, he most likely did the same type of work CMC did and was running a lot faster than 4.73 during his NFL prime! OR perhaps the 40 was a specifically bad drill for him to show his speed, perhaps being someone who hit their top end speed later than just 40 yards. With the way he was built I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the case. Obviously some people are faster out of the blocks/ first 20 or 40 yards, some are much faster once they get past 40 or 50 and really open up. Since we have already established what we both know: that top end speed, 40 speed, track speed etc, is NOT even close to the end all be all for being a great back, I totally get where you are coming from saying it’s a bad metric to use, but I think terrible is taking it a little too far. This is why NFL teams do use the 40 and also will of course be aware if a player ran trakc in college at an elite level, such as CJ spiller, and it will greatly improve their draft stock. Not becusdr it’s a guarantee they will have success and be a game breaker, but because if you are at least a certain level of fast, history says you are much more likely to be successful in the pros. Priest was just something else. An outlier. Of course speed can’t tell you what a guy is going to be like once he gets the ball in his hands. Trakc speed doesn’t tell you his IQ, vision, toughness, nose for the end zone, determination, etc. but it still had to be studied. I honestly do wonder, though, if somehow tip end speed, like the top MPH during a run, is something that scouts will now try to get data on more often from HS and college players? In the article I just read it had a few quotes from pro and D1 coaches and scouts after how the 40 is a good metric, but so many players put too much emphasis on it and will even lie to enhance their stock, but that coaches are often looking for many other traits, and as long as a player runs a LEGIT electronic 4.6/4,5? That is PLENTY fast to play football at an elite level for a RB. Sorry if I’m bothering you or anything. As you can tell I live for conversations like this and love to learn from other people like yourself who have great insights!

Obviously some people are faster out of the blocks/ first 20 or 40 yards, some are much faster once they get past 40 or 50 and really open up. Since we have already established what we both know: that top end speed, 40 speed, track speed etc, is NOT even close to the end all be all for being a great back, I totally get where you are coming from saying it’s a bad metric to use, but I think terrible is taking it a little too far. This is why NFL teams do use the 40 and also will of course be aware if a player ran trakc in college at an elite level, such as CJ spiller, and it will greatly improve their draft stock. Not becusdr it’s a guarantee they will have success and be a game breaker, but because if you are at least a certain level of fast, history says you are much more likely to be successful in the pros. Priest was just something else. An outlier. Of course speed can’t tell you what a guy is going to be like once he gets the ball in his hands. Trakc speed doesn’t tell you his IQ, vision, toughness, nose for the end zone, determination, etc. but it still had to be studied.
I honestly do wonder, though, if somehow tip end speed, like the top MPH during a run, is something that scouts will now try to get data on more often from HS and college players? In the article I just read it had a few quotes from pro and D1 coaches and scouts after how the 40 is a good metric, but so many players put too much emphasis on it and will even lie to enhance their stock, but that coaches are often looking for many other traits, and as long as a player runs a LEGIT electronic 4.6/4,5? That is PLENTY fast to play football at an elite level for a RB.
