On the outtakes, DeVito doesn't break character or laugh. He's a true professional, which must have been really helpful when he first came on the young show.
It's weird seeing Danny in kids movies now. I can only see him as Frank hahaha. Like I'm watching Matilda and I'm expecting him to walk in as Manspider or some shit.
I love that they keep writing more and more horrific scenarios for Devito to act out to try to get him to back out of doing it, he has yet to not do anything they’ve written for him.
Frank Reynolds is one of the only times studio interference actually worked out. I can totally see the fact that they would be nervous about having at a big-name but she's as he jumped in headfirst and with both feet
frank adds so much to the group dynamic and his regression over time has been absolutely perfect ! i love how much genuine fun danny has on the show it just adds to the performance to have someone completely on board with whatever hijinks the guys want him to get up to. a highlight of their most recent podcast episode christmas special is when danny specified that the one thing he doesn’t want to do is get circumcised on camera😭😭 i wonder what kind of talks were happening in the writers room to warrant such a request !
For all the shitty, self absorbed actors out there, DeVito has remained true to himself and a genuinely great guy throughout a career far longer than most would be lucky enough to experience. He deserves all the love and recognition he gets, he's EARNED. and it's so great that this late in his career he can still play a character as influential and impactful as Frank Reynolds. Treasure this man, for there are far too few like him, and his absence will be felt when he's gone.
frank excepting mac when his dad didn’t, when we know frank to be fan of fanciful artistic expression really made me cry. Mac struggles with how to interpret his feelings but when he does so in a complex medium that happens to be one that frank can understand. Like a special language that mac and his surrogate father share
I just love because of his older age and really chill attitude, hes willing to just go along with the most batshit insane jokes and thats probably why the show is so great
It's Always Sunny has one of the strangest and most unique dynamics I've ever seen in a T.V. show. . . With every season, 'the gang' strays further and further away from the rest of society, burning bridges with everyone they encounter and consequently becoming more and more isolated, more reliant on each other's input rather than the input of outsiders. This causes them to enable one another's absurdity, becoming weirder and more depraved with every passing season, to the point where they can hardly have normal interactions with every day people anymore. . . Almost everyone who comes in contact with them is immediately put off, left wondering if something is wrong with them, or left so totally confused by the interaction that they end up asking, "what is happening right now?" "The Gang Misses The Boat" is one of my favourite episodes, because it represents the point of no return; they realize they've become completely toxic as a group, and they try to break up and reintegrate with society. . . Only to find out that they can't. They're so far gone, the only people left who can tolerate them are each other.
They kinda strayed away from this in the last couple seasons though. I think they’re worried about cancel culture cause they have really toned it down.
IASIP is the only show for me that got better over time for so long. My other fav show the Office was in its prime from seasons 2-6, 1 was good. 7 was good. 8 was okay. 9 was a crime against humanity. To me, this is generally the route of most tv shows. (Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, Scrubs, Brooklyn nine nine, Lost, Prison Break, Walking Dead…) But Sunny hits its prime in season 3 or 4 and goes til 10? 11? 12? 1 and 2 still really great. 13 was solid. Haven’t watched 14-16 yet. The more depraved, the better it got. And you’re right, the self reflection episodes are so good. ‘Gang misses the Boat’ is obviously the GOAT for that, but the ‘Gang Tends Bar’ is also amazing. In ‘The Gang Plays Quarantine’ they admirably accept their alcoholism, but then decide to drink away that thought and stuff it down deep inside😂 And Frank is an essential catalyst for such consistency at such high quality.
Sure I was vaguely aware of its existence, but I watched the show for the first time this year… and absolutely fell in love. I saw like two episodes and still was a bit unsure about it, but the third episode was Mac coming out. That episode is the perfect encapsulation of what makes me love the show so much: on one hand the manic depravity and on the other a level of depth and sincerity (that even most „prestige“ shows lack). All personified by Danny‘s amazing performance as Frank
Mac's dance scene blew me away when it aired years ago. I still can't watch it without bursting into tears when his father stands up and walks out... I'm a grown man.. a straight man..
It seems to me like Danny in a way is doing exactly what Frank is. "I don't know how long I got left, I'm going to get real weird with it". He seems genuinely happy all the time in the show, because he is. He IS Frank.
Another thing that I feel needs to be pointed out is that by having such a quality actor giving it his all, it definitely gave the rest of the cast the guts and confidence to perform at their finest. Everyone in that cast has earned accolades for their portrayals.
Frank to Mac & Charlie: "You guys need a father figure and I'm trying to be that father figure and someday you're gonna thank me for it" (2nd season 3rd episode 'Dennis and Dee Go On Welfare' 3:25) Frank to Mac: "No, no, forget the float. That's just doing it for the wrong reasons. You got to do something else" (13th season 10th episode 'Mac Finds His Pride' 14:05) Frank to Charlie: "But don't you worry, I'll always be there for you. I'll always have your back" (15th season 8th episode 'The Gang Carries a Corpse Up a Mountain' 15:07)
Its so funny to me the fact that the first meeting he had with rob glenn and charlie they didnt know when he was or wasnt in character, bc he kept saying things like "my father had a box of teeth"
Frank works cause of the ability of danny devito to get lost in a character that u can see Danny in the character u just feel it’s the character like he did with the penguin on taxi and he has done on sunny for 14 years that makes him have an appeal that transcends generations
Danny is NOTHING like Frank and that is just more testament to his acting prowess. He rocks and seems like such a cool dude in real life. Like what a freaking legend. And this show, even while the main archetypes remain the same, shows a lot of diversion in the characterizations of each character. It's fun to see how they all evolve or DE-Volve. It's all brilliant.
I had it on VHS as a kid and would steal watches of it when the adults weren't around. Kid me came for the animated intro sequence, grew into adult me who loved Danny Devito for everything he was in.
I feel since the passing of Betty White that Danny is our next national treasure! Wrap him in bubble wrap when he's finished getting "REAL WEIRD WITH IT"!
My favorite Frank moment was at the very end of the night man comith. Charlie just got rejected by the waitress and he tells Charlie. Forget about her. She isn’t worth it He was so honest and supportive.
Frank is always excited about whatever awful thing he’s about to do with great joy & no regret. I adore seeing pure passion, even terrible goblin man passion.

There's the famous quote "money is the root of all evil" which is false and more accurately said as "money makes you more of what you already are." Since the gang were already assholes, throwing Frank into the mix makes Sunny a much better viewing experience
There is a character that is very similar to Frank Reynolds, in Shameless the character of Frank Gallagher is very similar in spirit, less buffoon but just as depraved. There are very beautiful arcs in Shameless where Frank tries to turn it around and learn from it only to come out a more pure version of his depraved self. At least the way I see it.

What other characters have changed so drastically? Rickety Cricket. Want me to go outside Sunny? Okay how about Pam Poovey from Archer. In the first episode Archer has her pinned down and is beating her with a puppet. For real. Even recently, he was in the latest jumanji and I kept expecting him to talk about toe knives and banging hoors. Lol.
