For the Lizzo situation: I dont feel like she was trying to tell people to go on any unhealthy diets- she was more like "hey, I talked with a nutritionist to make myself feel better. Dont do these things without research." I think people saw "detox" and we are so surrounded by diet culture that they equated her story to celebrities promoting the unhealthy diets I'm an overweight person- always have been always will be. Phil, the problem with what Lizzo did is that she pushes for body positivity, but then all of a sudden jumps headfirst into diet culture (she got the detox from an infamous "lose weight fast doctor"). And then posts a before and after photo, which is always used for weight loss or showing off body changes after a fad diet. For Lizzo, who is popular in the eating disorder world by pushing against society telling people they have to be skinny to have worth, who then participates in a dangerous fad diet, it is kind of a slap in the face. HOWEVER! Lizzo is human too, and we all fall back into diet culture every now and again. She should not be hated or canceled for doing what she did. I think she deserves some empathy. It's problematic because she is so popular, and hopefully younger girls don't get the idea to do a drink detox. Also also, even if she didn't do it for weight (which she didn't, from what I can see), I think she needs to put a disclaimer. As a famous person whose words carry much further, she unfortunately has to be somewhat careful with what she puts out there, especially being in the body positivity space.
@@sdf592 That's irelevant, she did it because she 'wanted' to take care of her body. Whether she was successful or not has nothing to do with the conversation lol...
Body positivity sounds like a nice idea, but it's maybe a little binary. Rejecting standards aesthetics as a means of measuring worth doesn't require that you have to adopt an absolutist standard of loving yourself as you are. There are alternatives. If you enjoy perfect dignity and esteem just for existing, then dignity isn't attached to enacting an agenda or serving the people you care about. If you have stuff going on, then you'd pragmatically want a body that survives your 40s to see it out. So there isn't just shame vs acceptance. Maybe pragmatism is a better game.
Yessss. Obviously she can do whatever she likes to, like anyone else. But diet culture is real, and pushing smoothie or juice cleanses is not safe. It's frustrating because she's someone who has shown how to care for yourself long-term. Yeah, you can have harder months, but that does not mean you need to smoothie cleanse to 'make it right', "get back to where you were". She was there because she was doing her thing. This smoothie cleanse, has not publicly been her thing before.

I'm sitting here, fat as heck, eating cookies. Now it has been two months since my last cookie, so this really is just awful timing. But I am super proud of anyone that can work a diet. Eating healthy is easy. I do that. But a diet? Agony. I've not had the will to do that. Which is why I haven't gained a single pound in 7 years. But, I also haven't lost any weight either. Losing weight is not something the body ever lets you feel comfortable doing. The body hates losing weight. Diets are truly proof of a strong will.
She's one of those negative body positivity people who thinks that skinny people suck and it's better to be fat so now she's just getting a taste of her own medicine with her fans hating her for doing a simple juice cleanse
I didn't know "diet culture" was even a thing until I saw that story. How can people possible get upset over someone wanting to be a on diet? Nevermind, it's 2020, people will actively find things to get upset about!
The body positivity agenda is a psy-op to keep Americans fat, and thus, less capable to fight back. Of course the CIA controlled media is going to tell them to shame her :)
Phillip saying, “That’s what she said,” gives me reassurance as a 29 year old parent of two, nurse, and person with two undergrad degrees and still says that all the time.
Re: Lizzo I dont know her well, I'm not in that scene of celebrities. But if juice cleanses / detoxes / whatever are really the thing people are mad over, people should be *educating* her and not just saying "nooo, this ain't it." From my perspective, the comments I saw looked like they were just shaming her for her decision and from an outside perspective she could have taken that as hate and not genuine criticism. Just a thought for what to do when you criticise your faves. Edit; typo
Juice cleanses are one step above starvation: with just some vitamins and sugar(fructose.) They can be quite dangerous, especially since 1/3 American adults are pre-diabetic. www.cdc.gov/diabetes/library/features/diabetes-stat-report.html#:~:text=34.2%20million%20Americans-just%20over,Asians%20and%20non-Hispanic%20whites. You're paid on royalties not a weekly wage.. whether she means two or not, she is using her platform to promote diet tea or smoothie type things. Not that she's doing it maliciously, because I do genuinely think that she is a good-hearted person. For the Lizzo situation:
I dont feel like she was trying to tell people to go on any unhealthy diets- she was more like "hey, I talked with a nutritionist to make myself feel better. Dont do these things without research."
I think people saw "detox" and we are so surrounded by diet culture that they equated her story to celebrities promoting the unhealthy diets
I'm an overweight person- always have been always will be.
I think her posts were misinterpreted by a lot of people
Edit: when you listen to her explanation of what her goal was and why she was doing it, it makes sense that she was actually balancing out the bacteria in her intestines- too much bad bacteria can cause issues and a lot of people deal with this. Fruit smoothies are actually great for this issue.
Idk how bad it was for Lizzo to go to this extreme, but I'm glad she is feeling better.
No dietician would ever recommend a juice cleanse/detox diet. They don’t work, period. People were more upset because she herself probably did no research, then talked about it in a way that would help all her problems, and the BP group is filled with both gym junkies and well food junkies. Gym junkies were mad for the false information, and food junkies were mad because she was trying to “get healthy” and dieting will result in weight loss
@@Spy11357 idk, she said she was working with a nutritionist

Lizzo: looks after her own health
The internet: “how dare you”
It's not about that. Shes allowed to do whatever she wants with her body. The problem is the promotes a detox cleanse to lots and lots of people with an ED. She just explained why she did it after the fact, and at first with the before and after pictures it looked like a weight loss thing.
you have to careful with those detox cleanses. that’s the first step to an ED. A large amount of obese patients end up with severe eating disorders, you have to be really careful

How is BS "detox" and disordered eating taking care of your body?
