Shane! I was the guy awkwardly standing and trying not to look like I was staring, across from you and Caroline on the rental car train at 2 in the morning in Atlanta. I thought about saying something to you but I could tell you’d had as crazy a long hard day of travel that I had. So I just kept it to myself. But love your channel love your work. Hope you and the wife got home safe and sound!
Hey Oliver, I wish you would have said something, but I understand. If anything it would have probably lightened the mood 😅. I think it was indeed a long, hard day of travel for everyone there. We did eventually make it home. I hope you made it home safely as well and thank you for the support!
Nice video Shane, but supporting Matter only through a proprietary hub (like Flic is doing) isn’t a great solution. The goal is to get rid of all these hubs!
Seems a little light on the ‘wow’ tech this year, but nice to see Matter moving forward. I’d really like to see robot vacs and other tech start to go back to modularity - it’d be nice to be able to upgrade platforms/products with new features and make them more sustainable long-term versus all of these things that will just end up in landfills if they’re not upgradable - like the Narwhals could swap out the existing roller for the upgraded one and/or the new side brush.
the first trailer and second trailer of Companion are so different it really does show a lot more details of what its about so don't watch if you want fresh eyes. I just saw the new trailer on the big screen before a showing of Nosferatu and it looks realllllly good.
Really want to know more about smart matter over thread dimmer switches. All of the other products mentions are very cool, but when purchasing 40-50 light switches to build a smart home I would love to hear about what is available matter over thread.
The Beatbot pool cleaners looked awesome, plus their turtle looking robot interesting idea to track species in their environment without disturbing it, one thing I would have like to see with their ramp is once the pool cleaners looked awesome once up the ramp, the ramp would be able to drive itself into your shed for security purposes
What I am most excited about is battery powered presence sensors. Been wanting to get into presence sensing for a while now, but the need for wired power held me back. Some of those Govee lights looked interesting too, especially the floor lamp with the patterns on top and the first wall light that you showed. Looks like it was a pretty good CES this year.
Bought the third really buttons for my rocker light switch on Black Friday. Had issues with connectivity with the matter hub. I would lose connections for 10 mins everyday but the issue sometimes disappear. Can’t complain as that’s the only options for renters
Hey Shane - thanks for the details ( Pssst, I am okay with you reading print if needed, lol). There was a lot of cool stuff, but I am most interested in any of the battery operated presence sensors. Aqara FP300 I think was the first one you mentioned, but it seems like there were a few. I have avoided them for my home because it seems like they all need to be plugged in until now.
1:58 and who wouldn’t mind that hovering on the other side of the door. It’s always good to see a Chinese fella. It means the Chinese food has arrived. Unless you live in China, which might mean it’s the postman or just your brother. But where I live, it the food.
Hey Shane, great videos as always. Aqara is really stepping up their game this year, but I definitely love that robot with the humidifier. Reminds me of Rosie from the Jetsons.
This year looks great for the smart home. May need a comparison of the SwitchBot S20+ vs the Narwal Flow to decide though. Most excited about the stuff that blends into the home without looking like a smart home “look at me” add on. More functionality and use than flare, and I’m here for it.
Great Video Shane! Wow are vacuums coming along - some cool features there. Aquara POE bullet looks OK but the lack of an elegant POE turret camera is still a big dissapointment which leaves us still having to use Scrypted or Homebridge. Consumer Wi-Fi "security" cameras are too open to jamming, etc. for me. Is anyone adressing this yet? Any rumors re: POE cameras?
I’m super excited about all of the new Govee products, so many cool things. I just wish their app wasn’t so bloated and confusing. Hopefully they’re working on simplifying it!
Desperately need Homekit to expand it's capabilities so we can take advantage of things like Aqara without needing to download their app. Do you need the Aqara app for any of the screen stuff or motion sensors?
Very interesting video But, my main concern with all companies announce that their products are Matter compatible is that it means “Matter over WiFi”. It’s for example the case for Nanoleaf and all their new products. Even my favorite RUclipsr just said “Matter compatible” without any details 🤪 For some products (like robot vacuum for example), WiFi could be a good choice. But, for lights and switches, I think WiFi is not appropriate as I would like to have them still working correctly even if my wifi router is down. Thread (or zigbee) appears to be a better choice. It should be good if CSA alliance could force companies to be more clear with a new decision: - Matter over WiFi for products which only support WiFi - Matter over thread for products which only support thread - Matter only for products which support both WiFi and thread I will continue to dream to have more “Matter over Thread” lights and switches
Thanks for the comment. I think there was a good mix of wireless protocols in all the Matter stuff. There are some companies though that will only support matter over wifi. I agree, I like zigbee or thread for things like smart switches. It's cool to see companies like Aqara actually releasing products that support both zigbee and thread... so you have options and can choose the best one for your needs.
7:10 - I think it’s gimmicky too, but I guess if you set it to get to work when you’re not home and dog leaves it’s it’s toys or in my case drags our shoes and socks around the house then this is a great idea, but we don’t let our dogs free roam the house when we’re not home, but if we did the arm can pick up their toys and our shoes and socks.
I'm very excited about the announcement of a new keypad with facial recognition from Switchbot. I'm surprised they didn't announce it. But I guess it makes sense if they didn't have the hardware ready to show off yet. Anyways, since you never reviewed the Lockly Visage last year so I hope you can review the new lock and keypad from Switchbot since you've reviewed their past 2 locks.
Correct, you can add thread devices directly to your smart home ecosystem without the need for an Aqara hub. You may have some additional capabilities when using the Aqara hub or app, but it is not required.
Perhaps a sensitive topic, but are you at all concerned about the US gov’t warnings on China IOT devices for smart homes? I have a few TP smart plugs, Aqara sensors and about 80 other smart devices. I’m in the process of securing my home network with ubiquiti, but not sure where to go from here. What are your thoughts?
The first one that I ever used that truly had the best obstacle avoidance was the Freo Z Ultra. I also used the Freo X, but I think the obstacle avoidance was much better on the Freo Z. It does a great job.
Actually yes we discussed this some. The Nanoleaf CEO actually told me that he immediately sent my video (on the Nanoleaf Sense+) to his engineering team after watching it so they could take into account the feedback. While he didn't give any specifics, he said we made some good points and they are open to feedback for improving their products. It's always nice when a company listens to the community and is open to criticism in order to make improvements.
Philips owns a lot of smaller companies that they just tag their name into. One such example is Respironics, which has been making Oxygen and CPAP gear since the 1970s before Philips bought them.
@@jaycorbin They did use to rebadge both brands as the other quite a lot. (For example most Dodge models were sold as Chryslers here in Finland back in the 90s and early 2000s.)
my house is filled with aqara sensors and after the original batteries died the sensors never worked the same again. replaced with maxwell, panasonic, and energizer batteries and they randomly drop frequently. dont think i can trust aqara after all these issues.
I wish Switchbot would lower the price of their Blind Tilt, for existing window blinds. Know of any other brands that make a retrofit device for existing blinds at a lower cost?
Tbf in this situation he is only showing us products that he is seeing for the first time and has no real hands on time with them. It’s good to see what’s coming soon even if you make it to CES
He is doing the best he can, there is so much you can do when you don't have the devices in your hand. Thanks, Shane for doing the best you can while at the show!!!👏🏽
we have cats ... cats have a cat toy basket ... like children .. they dont put the cat toys back ... many a cat toy has terminated a vacuum run so ok if it works!
I'm just skeptical regarding how well this would actually work in real life. I think I'd prefer a robot vacuum with top notch obstacle avoidance and just move around the things left on the floor.
Yes I have a couple children, although they are older now. I have more trouble with dog toys scattered throughout the house these days. I'm still not sure about the vacuum robot arm though.... curious to see how well it would actually work in real life, if it ever actually ships.
@ Ok, then u know. 😊 Well, im not jumping the first gen before someone tests it firsts, thats for sure. Promising tech I think, if they can do they object detection well.

The new HK doorbell. Oh wait, there isn’t a new one😢
Aqara's battery-powered presence sensor at 03:26, and the new affordable Homey hub and dashboard at 32:00

Agree, especially with batteries. They need to be consumer replaceable as they wear out, or as newer, more powerful ones are available.
Thank you for the video Shane 😊
Nice video Shane! CES had some fantastic products for our smart homes.
Very interesting but also very cute.
Thank you, great video
18:58 - It looks like a MacMini in space gray! 😂
Quite a lot going on at CES this year! I'll have to re-watch this later when I can pay more attention to each of the products.
Shane, thanks for the great detailed info. Very helpful.
Great video you the first person I seen having smart equipment great job.
Great tour! I feel like buying everything! Gotta start making plans for my next purchases and what I want to try next!
Most comprehensive rundown I've seen yet. Great job.

super jealous CES on my list to do bit of a trek from the UK, the Aqara stuff looks good.

Any matter ceiling fan/light switch/controller???
FYI the MAMMOTION isn’t 80deg, its 80%, which is an 38deg slope. Thanks for the great videos!
Ah yes, my mistake. Thanks for the clarification! 🙏

Nice to see some battery powered presence sensors coming out, I don't want cables dangling down my walls
Agreed!
Not sure if I’m impressed or just scared by the robot vacuum with an arm that picks things up. What’s next? Robots doing our laundry too? 😂
Very interesting video

I want to know where I can buy those lamps from the Flic booth.
Did we just get a glimpse of the curtain light 3 at the entrance of the Govee booth? Those string lights look more dense than the current version 🤔.
I liked the "Homey Pro". What was the price? Can this be used in the USA?
Yes Homey Pro can be used in the US. They Homey Pro is $399 and the Homey Pro mini will be $199

Is that battery Aqara sensor that can sense what part of a room you are in like there other sensor.
No the FP300 can’t do zones like the FP2. That would likely drain the battery much faster which is why I assume they left it out.
So there are now some Aqara devices using Matter & Thread - so no hub and no app needed?
Correct, you can add thread devices directly to your smart home ecosystem without the need for an Aqara hub. You may have some additional capabilities when using the Aqara hub or app, but it is not required.
We need a vacuum for the stairs SwitchBot come on!
Are the Aqara matter over Thread devices still forced to use Aquara's hub? EDIT, I see you said their matter devices do not need a hub now.
That's right, you should be able to connect thread devices directly to your smart home ecosystem without an Aqara hub.

I don't understand the obsession with RGB lights. Nothing says tacky like colored lights all around your house.
It’s just lighting
No PIR sensor in the Tapo T150?
PIR and radar 2 in 1
Given how all my robovacs, Freo X included, still have problems with my loose USB cables, I think having an arm isn’t the worst thing.
The first one that I ever used that truly had the best obstacle avoidance was the Freo Z Ultra. I also used the Freo X, but I think the obstacle avoidance was much better on the Freo Z. It does a great job.
Did you ask Nanoleaf about the limited Matter capabilities in their Smart switch? Just curious
