How can you not like Gerry Cooney!
He gets a bad rap, in my opinion. He is remembered as being a bum who couldn't take a punch, but he actually has a pretty impressive career record. The guys he lost to were all very well known and respected champions themselves (Holmes, Spinks, Foreman.)
@@jtstevenson81 he beat Norton, Young and Ron Lyle people who won people like Ali, Foreman and Shavers. And he had a great 13 rounds against one of the greatests heavyweights of all times.
@@jtstevenson81 He should've NEVER lost to Michael Spinks. That's the only thing I have against him. I absolutely despised Spinks after those two bullshit "wins" against Holmes, that everybody knows was total BS, and I truly thought Gerry would demolish Spinks, but he choked like a rabid dog in that fight. I'll forever be a Mike Tyson fan, for handing Spinks, his ass, on a silver platter. Probably the best night of my life!
What a friendly likable approachable guy really refreshing when you see people like this restores faith in humanity no massive ego just a Humble happy guy 👍
Holyfield hurt Forman alot worse
@@anfman1972 Ron Lyle hurt more than either!
Never knew Cooney was such a cool guy!
People call this guy a bum..lol Cooney was a bad ass fucking puncher..and destroyed alot of boxers..👍
@@coryanthony5134 Yup, I'll always remember his mauling of Norton in particular
@@coryanthony5134
Yeah, none of those bitches would call him a bum if they had to stand in front of him, they’d fucking run. You know how cowards are.
Great person and great fighter.
@@coryanthony5134 Gerry's chin let him down against some accurate big punching heavies but he was a damn talented and dangerous fighter in his own right!
Jerry Cooney sucks he was a real fighter he would’ve never hit Norton all the way to the canvas like that should be ashamed of himself as a professional
Gerry Cooney had a lot of heart in that Foreman fight!
Cooney ran in the Foreman fight
@@anfman1972 i would too. Cooney and foreman had some of the hardest punches in the division at that time. Everyone knew that and were avoiding the three including Tyson.
Heart? It lasted 2 rounds?
@@singingchef23 you wouldn’t have gotten up after that first knockdown and neither would 99% of the population my dude lol that shows heart to get back up like that
More like 99.9999999999999999 but yes
What an inspiration he is,,I'm also struggling with alcohol and it's nice to hear him volunteer his admission. 👍what I needed to hear.
He did hit Big George with the left hook. It was the only time I saw big George really moved in his comeback.
Holyfield hurt Forman alot worse than Gerry did
@@anfman1972 Overall yes. But George did say on the letterman show that the one left hook Cooney connected was the hardest he had ever been hit. And if you watch it closely it was a shot
@@smacky1966 I think he was just saying that out of respect for Cooney I remember the shot, then seeing the replay. Didn't look like much of a shot, and I remember Alex Wallu saying the same thing
@@anfman1972 not true at all. Holy Field said in an interview that He was hurt by George in that fight. I've been following boxing since 86 when I was 10yo. I'm a daddy's girl he took me to a lot of fights. But Holyfield said Foreman was the hardest puncher he faced. And it took him some time to get over that fight.
@@michellefreeman3659 no, I was referring to George Foreman saying Gerry Cooney hitting him harder than he was ever hit. I wasn't referring to Holyfield
Glad to see ol Cooney doing good for himself without any pent up negativity or slurred speech after such a rough life and career.
I met Gerry Cooney at a signing and he was such a cool guy. When i walked around table for picture he hidd what i had him sign and when i turned to look for it he had a big smile. Really cool guy best to him and family
Everyone said i met him but in reality you are a liar 😡😡😡😡😡
What a great guy !, I am surprised that he has this refreshing personality .... well done Gerry !
Gerry is a great guy, and he was a great fighter!! I am a big fan of his. I met him in Huntington a few times way back when. Followed his career. Reading his book now. Good soul....
Cool guy, Him and Forman two greats in and out of the ring
You could sense a bond between these two awesome.
Cooney always was a good guy ,now he's a great guy.Helps old boxers and kids.
I met Jerry Cooney up on 96th st upper west side back in '93...he was one of the friendliest fellows ive ever met, we had a great chat after a mtg...God Bless Jerry Cooney!!
I love Cooney! Always have. I've been a huge boxing fan for about 40 years, and he was one of my favorite boxers. I loved to watch him in the 80's. ❤
Great interview Hannibal!
Larry Holmes said the same thing about Cooney’s power...hardest he’d ever been hit.
DayWalker 88 not as hard as Earnie Shavers, but way up there.
Not as hard as Foreman. Hardest hitting puncher ever
@@smoothALOE Lol. I thought the same thing. Holmes must've forgot how hard Shavers hit him.
ANTFLO SHOP or Tyson.
@@gaffle-411
Tyson wasn't really THAT hard of a puncher in relation to the hardest hitting HWs of all time I dont know for sure that Mike makes the top 10.
He hit hard AF dont get me wrong but his thing was more about timing, accuracy, 2-3 punch combos, catching his opponent off balance etc.
Look into it. This isn't purely my opinion but what I've learned from watching and listening to Boxing people much wiser than myself.
This is cool man keep it up
Nice interview with Cooney
Would have loved to have seen a Cooney/Morrison fight. Would have been great to see who had the best left punch.
More like who had the biggest glass jaw. But to your question, Morrison would have destroyed Cooney, if they fought both in their primes. Also, to your other question, Tommy's left hook was far better than even Cooney's. Ken Norton might disagree, though! LMAO
Good to see him so well.
Cooney is a class act.
For all of his shortcomings in the ring (defensively mostly) that left hook to the body... OMG. Holmes and Foreman both have given high praise to Cooneys power. Even Tyson has commented on Gerrys left hook (obviously they never met in the ring). Great guy though.
The 1982 Holmes vs Cooney fight was my personal introduction to Boxing (and combat sports in general) and I absolutely LOVED IT. Sitting around with my father, Granddad and uncles. As a 10 yr old I knew it was a big event and I paid attention. I got into Boxing myself soon after. I never went far, but to this day I still have "hands" vs the "avg Joe" and I'm forever grateful. The left to the liver.... my favorite shot.
After their fight, George said ; " In the first round Cooney threw a left hook to my body. I blocked it with my right
arm. The power went through my arm, into my body and left me feeling dizzy." THAT is awesome power.
Such a shame he couldn't have won the big one but he doesn't look like it bothers him at all. Would love to meet him. Seems like a really decent guy!
COONEY IS A GREAT GUY, IS ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING TO HLP THE DOWN AND OUT GUY. A TOTAL CHAMPION IN LIFE
Glad to see he can still put two sentences together. Too many fighters from his time can not.
Looks phenomenal here. More handsome than when he fought.
Good for him.
I met Gerry Cooney at the Martial Arts Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden. Nice guy.
Foreman said that Gerry had a tremend left punch, stringer than Freizer
So happy to see Gerry in a good place mentally, emotionally. That guy doesn’t have a racist bone in his body. That whole “Great White Hope” White vs Black stuff was done to further promote the fight
(-vs- Holmes). Don King and the “Wacko Twins” fanned that flame.
Cooney in 1982 was a shy, introverted 6’6” HW bruiser with a left hook from Hell. He also used alcohol and cocaine around that period (like most addicts and alcoholics to fill a void or numb a pain from a tough upbringing).
I’m glad Gerry and Larry are friends today.
Big George Foreman said Cooney hit him the hardest, harder than Ron Lyle, Cleveland Williams and Joe Frazier let that sink in.
What an awesome man Gerry Cooney God bless you brother
U couldn't dislike gerry cooney very nice man top fella
i’ve been waiting to see what this guy is like. he destroyed ken norton then got destroyed by George Foreman
Ken norton was way past his prime
But anyway norton couldn t deal against punchers
Love Gerry !
2 great interviews with Larry Holmes n Gerry Cooney. Cooney was a viscous puncher like his fight with Ken Norton. He was never the same after that fight with Larry Holmes though. Would love to see him in his prime against Tyson Fury n Deontay Wilder. Another boxer with great stories that can rival any wrestlers is Vinny Paz. Be a great interview there.
Cujo Killjooh Oh yeah! Mike Weaver, forgot about him. What a fight he had with Larry Holmes. Weaver was also a very underrated fighter n champion. Going to watch that fight on RUclips.
Pure class!!
Great energy
That's a good dude right there. Gerry is awesome.
Met Gerry and also had him on my boxing radio show. He wanted to spar me. Lol. Loved him.
What a really nice man..
Wow. A dude taller than Hanny?? Hannibal ALWAYS gets good guests. I don’t know about anyone here, but I’m STILL waiting for Hannys push in AEW. He fits in so right in that roster. It would be BIG TIME I see him walk THAT ISLE…..
Gerry's toughest opponent was himself, could have been world champion if only he had decided his self more, but still was a great fighter.
His management was inexperienced but his trainer was good- Duva.
@@darbyheavey406 His trainer was Victor Valle.
Wonderful human being [Cooney]!!!
Great man.
What a great guy....class act.
George Foreman said that Gerry hit him harder than any man he ever fought.
He seems like a great guy
Gerry Cooney was a hard hitter. His fight against Holmes was HUGE!
The hype was huge, the fight was far more even than most people give it credit for, but Larry Holmes is a top 3 Heavyweight of all time, and in the end, schooled Cooney. But, hell yeah, I love watching Cooney V Foreman. I'm so proud of both men, because they remain best of friends to this day.
cant wait to watch it then
A legend
That was fun
They look like a father and son.
Keep preaching Gerry...
You live by the sword, you die by the sword...
Drugs and alcohol, the great equalizers of the non-championship fighters. They fight clean and look good, next time on the sauce and they are average. You can never tell which one will show up, the clean tough guy or the sauced bum. Jerry was a nice guy with a big punch but too free with the juice to be champion. His path was always moving around and he would get lost. He came close but never got there. He was a good fighter, and could have been even better...but...buts don't count.
You gotta love Gerry...he still got that left...
A prime Gerry Cooney with some confidence would have been a world beater.
What a great guy
Cooney is a legit 6-6. Hannibal is almost as tall.
Cooney is an awesome guy.
He loved that comment by foreman
Cooney was always cool
Gerry is one of the great guys
He looks great
BIG George said that when Gerrys left hook hit his arms it vibrated through him. Scared him!
Great champ
good to see Gerry has all his marbles, so many fighters are brain damage
a good man!
His trainer should have taught him to clinch ! Seems like a down to earth guy
Today I learned Gerry Cooney's dad is a Newfie. No wonder he is such a great guy!
Cooney what a great guy man, tough, good looking just could not win the big fight, was like a real Rocky
Nice guy great puncher
Cooney was out before he hit mat vs GF , wow
Great video
Should have asked him about his homeless sister on long island NY
If I had more time we would have done more. Maybe down the road after I read his book.
Jerry Cooney is mad cool 😎
Asking him about the Norton fight would be more polite.
Right, out of respect. Still a humble response
Gerry cooney reminds me of Steve O in like 20 years time
I kinda wish Cooney had fought just one more fight. Just so he could go out with a win. He didn’t just get caught with one good shot. He took multiple good shots from Foreman, haha! It was a brutal KO.
Ah what a gent
He looks like Michael Keaton with those glasses lmao
Cooney is way decent guy!!! Lovable big guy
He is massive
They could be father & SoN
George Foreman did say that Gerry Cooney was the hardest puncher....
Nicholas Johnson harder than Joe Frazier which is saying a lot.
@@smoothALOE I heard Foreman say that somewhere, let's face it, they're all hard punchers 😂
Nicholas Johnson yes, they are. I think Foreman punched harder than Cooney, as well. Can’t lose sight of that in the midst, haha!
No charlie zeneloff was the hardest puncher which foreman ever faced even earnie shavers was scared from him
Albanian Illyrian when did he mention him?
I always thought he was a bit punch drunk.
He looks and sounds great.
Watching Homes Cooney. Foreman Ali. Lyle Ali it has me thinking punchers need to quit working about distance. Go hard and go for broke. Probably best chance... Holyfield Tyson...
Who can say they were goosed by Gerry Cooney? Hannibal can! Lol. Cooney did have a hell of a punch. Probably still does!
How fucking cool is that dude?
👍
Gerry Cooney was always a Good guy....and I like Gentleman Gerry....but I dont like his racists fans
George Foreman annihilated Jerry Cooney.
Gerry still is dangerous you can just tell. Mis judge that “old” man at extreme peril
🤣🤣🤣!! .. I'll never forget when Otto knocked him out!! Haha lmfaoo 🤣🤣🤣
Stfu douchebag
@@Rizzbulla You weirdo.
Ever do any fighting your self?😏

Hit hard, but could not boxe!!
I have always seen Gerry Cooney as a clown and a phony.
Well then you're not seeing the guy most of us see in this video- approachable, friendly, happy, fun and full of life.
Typical Internet lowlife, everybody knows Gerry is a kind hearted classy guy.
Get a life.
Okay Karen
Love Gerry!
