This is beautiful. How wonderful to see young Irish people who have a love of their own language. My Grandfather emigrated to Boston in 1910 from County Kerry. When another Irish man heard him speaking Irish to a friend on a street corner, he said, "Sure, that language is no good to you now, boy. Give it up." My grandfather clung to the Irish language all his life. It was like a life raft for him.
I'm so glad your Grandfather clung to his language. My husband's grandparents emigrated to the US from Norway as teenagers, and they only spoke Norwegian to each other. They felt that since they were in America, the children should speak English. Because of that, my husband only knows one Norwegian prayer and a few other Norwegian words. It's sad really.
Absolutely wonderful to see young people so much into preserving their heritage, culture, music and language. We have a very similar situation in Wales and there are those who insist on trying to undermine our progress. I'm honest in that I do not understand why. We/you are peoples who have evolved and developed these skills since the Bronze age.. Why should we not fight to preserve them. They are unique. Love your music. Be strong you are on the right side of history.
@@davidk7049 I know it sounds crazy, but the success of our football team has been a major catalyst in the recent revival, especially with kids. In the past, speaking Welsh was seen as uncool, backwards, embarrassing. Doesn't help that we are exposed to English media which disparages the Welsh language and culture, which compounds the shame. Now the football team uses the Welsh language in banners, using Cymru instead of Wales. Only a handful of the football team are Welsh speakers, so this is coming from non-Welsh speakers which is amazing. The success of Yma o Hyd, which is a Welsh nationalist folk song (until recently was probably the most uncool thing ever!), and kids enjoying singing the song. Also with the football, people outside of Britain are hearing out language being sung and they enjoy it, it kind of helps that others see value in our language even if 'our neighbours' don't. You need something similar in Ireland. Find a way to make Irish cool. Language is a treasure.
It's not magic, it's the prayers of the people on the land, bringing everything to life. If the people have no depth, they can't see the generations that passed through the land.
I really enjoyed this presentation. I am Irish by heritage, not by birth. I learned a few common phrases from my parents, but that’s as much of the Irish language I ever learned. I’m 75 years old and have lived in Canada for 55 years. Recently I enrolled in an online Gaeilge academy and I have never been so excited! Wish me luck learning 🇨🇦☘️!!

He came from a long line of Maguires, MacAuleys, Magaurans, Flanagan's. He had to leave Glasgow for NYC because of a bare knuckle fight he had with a Scotsman. I left America to live in a Mayo Gaeltacht as a wee lad Amazing experience!
I can't believe I'm reading your comment. Glangevlin, I know the place well. In fact the last speaker of a particular Gaelic dialect from that region passed away in 1939. He was my great grandfather. He started a Gaelic school that no longer exists. I heard it been said it was the first Gaelic school in a couple centuries. His name was Sean Ruaridh MacUidhir (John Rory Maguire). You will find him if you search online. The Scottish Highlands and Islands university had his stories with translations and a picture of him. I don't know if its still there though.

I can’t speak gaélico/ Irish (I’m bilingual in English and Spanish castellano) but my Dad’s mother came from the Gaelic speaking west coast of Ireland to Kilkenny where she met my Grandfather from there with family in Dublin too. Nana used to speak to us in Gaelic when we were little and Granddad being from east coast like my dad couldn’t speak Irish. Granddad used to say it’s a waste of time …. People all around the world are told their language is dead from tribal peoples to regional languages but there is also a lot of enthusiasm / desire for people to learn their languages. There is also a sense of loss and disconnect among many people from their culture that can be found on many threads on YT.
These three beautiful people have given me hope. They are right when they say the schools here do not encourage any love for our language in young people. My dad was Michael Sheain Steaife Seoighe from An Aird Mhor, just like these guys. Both of my parents were native Irish speakers. It does my heart good to hear them. My mom used to say “sheasamh cosnochta sa sneachta ag eisteacht leob.”

I have such a connection to Irish songs/culture. I am Scottish however and from the Lowlands and cannot speak Gaidhlig (although I am working on this!). Looking at my family tree I have some great-great-great grandparents from Ireland (unfortunately I am not sure where). I love Scottish Gaelic and Irish due to their mutual intelligibility. But it's more than just understanding the language - it's about the culture and connection between our Celtic cousins. I was in Ireland for the spring at friends in a small village in County Meath - I felt right at home. Is toigh leam Èirinn agus saor Alba!
I’ve always found the Irish language, or more correctly Gaelic, and the music just… so so so romantic. I tried learning Gaelic on Duolingo over lockdown but just couldn’t, still love it tho
I’m 38 years of age born and reared in Dublin but from an early age in school I wanted to speak my ancestors language and unfortunately like my school and many other schools around the country they haven’t a clue how to teach Irish in schools hopefully that will change real soon

Being of Irish decent myself and not speaking the language fluently. I really had wished that they used subtitles for their songs. Just to match up the words to the melodies. It would have given so much more depth to the performance. Descriptions in the beginning are great, but to able to follow through the song word wise with the wonderful melodies would have lent a whole different of depth to the means behind the feelings of the songs. To be true!

Wales has done an incredible job at preserving and reviving the Welsh language, I hope we manage to follow your example in Ireland!
