Sad… I surfed from sunrise to sunset by the Flagship. I loved looking up at the hotel while paddling out or riding a wave. I wish it was renovated. I also mostly surfed at 27th, 37th and 61st streets. I was obsessed with surfing. I even hitchhiked with my surfing board from Pasadena to Galveston. I’d get out of class at San Jacinto College at 1030 and be in Galveston in the surf by 1130. I’d surf until sunset and drive home. Mom would always have supper ready. I knew times were so good back then but now I look back and those were perfect times. The entire family was healthy and young. We had so many family gatherings. Those were the happiest times in my life. Now my entire family is gone. I have boxes of pictures and videotapes but I don’t have the heart to look at them. I wanted to digitize them but who would want them after me.
My family stayed there in 1973 when I was about 9. The Flagship always held special memories for me. It was the last vacation we took as a family right before our parents divorced. I won't be going to Pleasure Pier.
This was an awesome video! Thank you for letting me reminisce on Galveston in my teenage years. RIP Flagship. For those who knew it, it was a Galveston Legend.
Neat video! I love hearing about the good ol days but as a kid in the early aughts i just remember this as an aging, scary eye sore in the middle of the beach. Would have been cool if it been better cared for and updated maybe.
I stayed there with my grandparents in the early-mid 70's several times. It was fun. Once when they werent paying attention I snuck out onto the balcony with a fishing pole and caught a fish. They were mad but impressed at the same time. I almost choked to death on a piece of steak in the dining room too. Scared the hell out of them. Its a wonder they took me anywhere.
I stayed at the Flagship a few times and noticed every floor had a mural when you exit the elevator on every floor. I don't suppose anyone has pictures of the those murals? Always wondered who painted them? I love the ship mural on this video! I always thought I'd have time to go back...
We had our 1970 Fraternity Spring formal at the Flagship. Got kicked out after some of the brothers did $600 worth of damage with the fire extinguishers.
At 1:46 you predict the future. I stayed in the Admiral's Quarters April 12 2008. A friend had reservations for his honeymoon and the wedding fell thru. He gave me the room. I can't legally say what went on in there, but I had a blast with some friends
thank you so much for doing this film. My hubby and i stayed here before Ike hit, and it truly upset me when i saw that it was destroyed. I remember feeding the gulls from my balcony.. i loved it.. i also remember thinking how kewl if they could bring it back to original but now iit will never happen.l nonetheless my memories will be forever and i am looking forward to visiting the new pleasure pier in Nov. thanks again!!
That restaurant, The Ocean Grill, at 1:07 - did it get destroyed also by Hurricane Ike? Me and friends and family dined there back in the 1990's - it was so nice and the food was sooo good.
I never stayed in the hotel but we did walk to the end of the pier and watched the surfers. I was 5 at the time. I said to myself "one day I'm going to stay there" but then ike hit. I was 12 when ike hit and now I can't stay there like I wanted to do. I was very sad when I saw the ruined building on tv. we didn't go back to Galveston for awhile I don't know exactly how long and I was crushed when I saw the ruined building in person just before they started demolition. this year me and my mom went to pleasure pier for my 19th birthday and and I walked to the end of the pier and a huge flashback hit me to the day I was 5 watching the surfers in the water. a lot of great memories happened there.
You really didn't miss much. Sorry, but I stayed there in 1994 and I wasn't all that impressed - it was "average" at best. However, in 1996 I stayed at The San Luis - now THAT is a hotel! It was even being renovated in places when I was there and it STILL was awesome. :) Definitely go stay there - you will LOVE it.
Wow such precious memories of my favorite childhood vacation spot, the Flagship!!! Did somebody stay there during Hurricane Ike???!! There were cars in that parking lot in front of the hotel...were people stuck there or did they choose to stay and ride it out? Hahaha...that must have been wild!
It was on outdated horrible hotel. I always stayed at the Galvez but one month the hotel had two wedding going on and was booked so my cousins convinced me into staying there it was cool to be over the water but that grand hotel that once was, was no more.

Wow! I never knew there was a hotel there!

Fished out of my room there one time.
My wife and I had our honeymoon there back in 1995. We returned in 1997. I cant believe its now longer there.
My husband and I had our honeymoon here in May of 1995 we didn't go back to Galveston until May 2024 for our anniversary. Cool to see your comment!

Great video of a time gone but not forgotten. Thanks so much for sharing.

Apache05 wow! That must have been exiting to catch a fish that high up!
Found you! Good to meet you brother
Thank you for this. I was looking for one about the demolition of the Flagship Hotel. Good one.

just saw your post on the murals. Harry Ahysen painted them. He was an artist at Sam Huston and was the State artist of Texas.
I didn’t know that hotel it’s been there

I honeymooned there in April , just months before the storm. I stayed in the Admiral's quarters

It shut down sometime before the hurricane and was turned into a Hooters. The Hooters/Pier was destroyed by Ike .. I really miss the Ocean Grill ❤️
@@joem2130 Okay, thanks!

But I was so young maybe about 6 when we started staying at this hotel in galveston so it's hard to remember but I remember a bit and it was amazing*
I loved this hotel so much it was the best one in galveston I don't care what people said about it but it truly was the best hotel in galveston
Is this Pleasure Pier now?
Yes it is.
now its pleasure pier
it was haunted anyways just like most of Galveston.
How did you get inside, after the storm?
It was on outdated horrible hotel. I always stayed at the Galvez but one month the hotel had two wedding going on and was booked so my cousins convinced me into staying there it was cool to be over the water but that grand hotel that once was, was no more.
Is this place still there?
Yes but it’s now the pleasure pier
It's now an amusement pier with rides, games and food.
Rented a room fo my 1998 graduation and demanded my money back! Place was falling a pat and a huge P.O.S.!!
