White Box is the game which opens the door to a whole universe of possibility. Works like White Star and Operation White Box and guys like those behind Night Owl Workshop provide just some of the ways that this four-to-five dollar book goes from stripped down fantasy game to any genre you could imagine. White Box Science Fiction? It exists. White Box war or weird war? It exists White Box pulp adventure, space opera/space fantasy, pirates, superheroes, sentai, Transformers, mutants, etc? They all exist. For the price of one WotC ideologically charged tome and some minor preparation time one can run whatever kind of game they want. It's marvelous.
These OSR channels are quite intimate and candid. I really appreciate the insights I'm getting from these videos as I don't have the same access to these resources.
You could consider DCC for your Aztec magic system, or I think BFRPG has a Spell Channeler or Sorcerer kinda supplement? 🤔 Good review video and White Box is great!
Frog God Games put out a setting called Tehuatl that sounds like your idea for Aztec setting. The main book is system neutral, but the supplements are available for S&W
There were a number of Aztec/Maya inspired supplements for the Basic/Expert Hollow World setting that I believe are all available in PDF from DM's Guild. I imagine there's some good fan content for it over on the Vaults of Pandius as well.
When you meantioned Conan GURPS had a Conan source book that was true to Robert E Howard's Conan . I regards to only 4 classes and 4 races it's very limiting to create a unique character because there's no real way to differentiate one human fighter from another besides weapon choice and his stats . In my basic fantasy game in using the class point buy system from 2nd edition AD&D but modified to fit basic fantasy . All warrior class abilities be it fighter , ranger or Paladin are open to the fighter class in basic fantasy and the same goes for the other classes too . That why playets can create the type of character they want so that no 2 fighters in a party has the same abilities even though both are still fighters
For me, I always award the mob/monster/whatever XP for DEFEATING the situation. Not necessarily killing them. You can defeat with words, or with a spell, or with clever trickery. So, even if they avoid direct combat, or are super persuasive, they get the same (usually a bit more) experience than if they were to Murder-Hobo it through.
Always interested in hearing another ttrpg perspective, likes and dislikes both. Personally, I don't get why there's so many clones/retro-clones, etc. that basically change nothing or maybe one or two things from the original inspiration. Just put out an addendum of OSR options and lessen the glut and confusion already. But then there's a ton of "neo-OSR" games that follow the same unfortunate formula, and I think it adds needless confusion. Appreciate the vids and thanks!
I think the over saturation of systems that do nothing to really change stuff are an issue. It's kind of like, "why buy OSR A, B, or C when its all the same?" And I think that is a valid question to ask. Its why I think Basic Fantasy is just the best in that regard. It's completely free and that's what makes it number 1. For the stuff I'm working, I want to do stuff where the spirit of" old school" is there but it isn't just a reskin of 2AD&D or B/X D&D.
Questing Beast has a good comparison of all the OSR, and what each brings to the table. OSE has great layout. Basic Fantasy is free to download and plenty of cheap books; White Box is the same but simplifies a bit more by only using d6 and d20.
I think a lot of it can be summed up to feeling complete. To have all those old rules and new additions in a single book. That and it's very easy to exploit a collectors instincts in this or any other hobby.
This is one of several games that reclaims what was lost when "What-See" ruined D&D by appealing to "the masses" and mainstream appeal. It's a great system for people who truly love "how it used to be."
Thanks I'm super happy people seem to like what I'm doing. I started playing in about 2010 or so? I can't remember exactly. But it was the much maligned 4th edition that was my entry into the hobby. Needless to say I am super happy I had friends who have been in the hobby MUCH longer than me who said to give OSRs a shot as well as other games like Traveller and Call of Cthulhu.
I often just draw maps myself in either a drawing program like clip studio paint (which is 60 bucks) or by hand. For hex maps I use this though. hextml.playest.net/blank.html

I love this book. Im hoping to run a few one shots with it!
If some spells just don't work in an aztec setting, just omit them. It's not like every culture would come up with the same exact spells.

Maybe they'll help
Thanks for the tip on this. I'll take a look at this. I'm looking for good inspiration and resources as I compile this.

@@1ccortez Do you remember which video he covers White Box? I'd be curious to see his thoughts on it as well.
@@titusgroen I think the White Box comment was me. He does have a video comparing different rulesets though, I just wrote my comment poorly.

Empire of the Petal Throne is aztec adjacent
The Petal Throne? But in an OSR form?
Conan is more of a Runequest character, haha.
Hey man
Thanks for spreading the good works of FMAG. I love this game
Just wondering, what edition did you start with, and what year

I started with 5e, so i didnt fair much better...
I hate how you can level from 1 to 20 in under 2 weeks on game time in 5e. Downtime and seasons are important.
Do you have any suggestion`s for a free tool to design world maps?

hextml.playest.net/blank.html
im just done with classes and levels
Man this is based on OD&D and not Basic🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂
Basic was just OD&D with a new coat of paint and better presentation, from what I gather.
