I’m back 11 years later to listen to this song again only to find out Jerry Lawson passed?! My heart goes out to his family. He had an amazingly soulful voice.

@@JulieL I am so sorry for your loss. I learned about Mr Lawson after watching him on this show when it first came on a years ago on NBC. I was instantly a fan and loved his voice. I downloaded all the music and was thrilled to see an album was released. May God bless you and your family. Praying the music and videos bring you comfort and that your husband touched many lives of people he never knew through his gift.

I would have truly loved to see Jerry Lawson and the Talk of the Town live at hall with awesome acoustics worthy of their magical blending of their voices. But alas I have learned from the comments that the great Mr Lawson is now singing to us from heaven. Rest in glorious, harmonious peace brother, you shall be deeply missed by your fans and bandmates.

I've watched this about 18k times through the years, and still get floored that he took us all to chruch with a song about a brothel.
as the saying goes "they don't make them like they use too" is exactly what comes to mind when I hear these guys...felt like I wasn't hearing a song but a story.

I was watching the night this aired. I got the chills. STILL amazing. Such Talent!
What an incredibly clever choice to sing the words to Amazing Grace in the background in that big middle verse. So smart! I was rooting for these guys all the way
I remember watching this as the contest was playing live on NBC. Man was this a good one.
For some context, Jerry and the group had hung around for the whole season into the finals. They were always pretty solid, and they definitely earned their spot. If I remember correctly, the finals were only supposed to be three groups, but they added in Jerry and TotT as a fourth just because they couldn't decide between either them or the third place group.
As you can see, Jerry isn't young. By this point in the show, he had become increasingly chair-bound and not participating in the choreography that the rest of the group did. You could tell he was hurting in some of the other performances. But this one was different. When he stood up and started getting into it at 0:54, I knew something was up.
Every time I hear the section at 1:21, it hits me hard. Maybe its just me, but I can hear the anguish of old souls in their voice condemned to not escape the titular House they've gotten trapped in. I was floored. There was a lot of talent in this competition, but this is one of the performances that has stuck with me for all these years. Damn good show.
amazing. they're just pure soul when singing and they dont need flashy lights or anything, their voices are all that is needed for them to be great

Easily my favorite performance of the season. Powerful, moving, like a beautiful cautionary tale movie in black and white. When the Talk of the Town opens up with that chord progression at the climax... man. That's all I can say.

If i were one of the judges, i would have chosen songs that were waaaay out of the box for these groups. this sounds like a song Jerry would have chosen. Make them do something harder
