      It would help if it was done with even the slightest thought.
      problems with this experiment:
      1: The terrain, hiking through the woods is an entirely seperate experience than walking through a paved area. The entire point of this device is to reduce the fight with intertia that happens when a strapped pack is dragging you, going UP and DOWN while traversing uneven terrain. This alone makes this entire experiment irrelevant.
      2: The locked and unlocked tests were done immediately one after the other, when they should have been done after the subject had rested and recovered between trials. Lets say for the sake of argument this ISNT used for hiking and its simply to reduce stress to a disabled user... not resting renders this moot because if you're already straining to move on a flat surface then doing double the work(two consecutive trials) eliminates the validity.
      I find it disturbing that a doctor did not notice these obvious flaws, I can only imagine how "competent" he is in other research that matters, like people's body. Also using the word "basically" in almost every sentance, is annoying AF.

      Some good points actually. I've been waiting for someone like you to come along and would be happy to ship you this bag if you're willing to break down the dynamic engineering analysis of the movement for everyone to understand on a video in detail. I think it deserves that explanation from someone who can properly do it. I know I'm basically acting as the wheel and the bag is the chassis floating on me and the tension system is shock absorption- but I have not done this type of engineering problem since college...

    This review was far more comprehensive and of significantly higher quality than I anticipated going into it. Thank you for your valuable data and anecdotal report. Stabilization devices are a burgeoning market, from vehicles, to electronics, to - now, backpacks. If i had to hedge my bets, the majority of developments in this specific or similar use cases will emerge from the military applications initially, and I am excited to see more of this technology enter the consumer market. Apropos of your videos in particular, I think there is a very interested audience for this sort of material, and speaking from my perspective alone, I am very interested in seeing further similar such content from you. Once again, your work is thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Thank you!

    Big 65 liter hiking packs are like 4.5lbs so idk if this would be worth it at 7.5 lbs for half the size. It’s probably better to have a light pack without suspension than a pack that weight three or four times as much with suspension.

    Thanks for the very clear and in-depth review. I believe what I got from the video was that overall it doesn't provide much benefit to the user besides maybe when declining back downhill after reaching the top point of your hike. Overall, as long as you are already fine with what you have and don't need the benefit of less force on your knees going downhill then a normal pack will probably do the job. That's kind of what I got from the video, would that be a safe assumption or am I missing something?

    The increased acceleration makes total sense when you think about it, as you push off the ground you are pushing against a lower weight and can accelerate more, i.e. on the flip side the 'locked' pack reduces your acceleration because you are trying to lift the additional weight.

    • @integritychiropractic
      @integritychiropractic  3 года назад +3

      It's been a long time since I've taken engineering dynamics and that's not my speciality at the moment. The issue is a bit more complicated as acceleration is affected in each orthogonal plane, not just vertically. Increased cadence means the limb will also undergo shorter cycles during gait which will show up as more aggressive acceleration/deceleration as well. I'm hoping a really smart engineer will be able to diagram the system of movement out and show the transfer of PE and KE in the elastic pulley system holding the pack and how the body is interacting with it to explain the physics more clearly. Hopefully this doesn't require Veritasium lol. I asked several buddies who are engineers but they were a bit stumped themselves. I guess some old man advice for the kids...When you ask in school when you are going to use what you are learning- here ya go 😂.

    Thank you for a video or indeed anything online finally honestly informing me about this pack system. For all who feel uncertain about what to think of this pack even after watching this video - it does not work. If you wanted to spend a lot of money on a pack I recommend Hill People Gear. All of their packs come with a harness that spreads the weight across your shoulders very well and have good belts you can buy (separately $$) and they come with excellent compression straps that squish the whole pack tight against your back - and the idea of a floating pack is a neat idea that doesn't make your load feel better but a compressed pack that is tight and not shifting around is an established idea that does work - especially with a very nice harness. Ok so yes a nice praise for hill people gear. Super expensivr but cheaper than this and they ship international.

      I was wondering the same thing as I do equal amounts of rucking and riding my full suspension mountain bike lugging the family’s gear. Let’s say you’re standing up pedalling up a steep hill, I wonder if the weight would move in the counter direction causing strain/more resistance.

    • @integritychiropractic
      @integritychiropractic  3 года назад +3

      The pack will move relative to whatever up/down motion you are generating from pedalling, but I think it would be too dangerous to use unlocked on a bike because you leaning forward too much at anytime could potentially throw you off balance which is why they say to lock it if you are near cliffs when on foot.

      Hmm 8kg is under it's weight limit, but I ran into that issue myself at times, especially if I hit some uneven terrain or I take a big step up. I haven't hiked yet this season but I did try to tighten the tension as I'm walking with it to help land in a better sweet spot. I think either the cord could have a better spring constant or the rails should be a tad longer. Also, do you release the tension from the cord when you are not using it? I believe keeping it under constant tension might slack the bungie cord over time.

    I would love to test this for you in a military capacity. The standard for us is 12 miles in 3 hours with a 45 lb pack dry. That means, without added water yet. We'd have to be in uniform and boots. I would love to record data for you with a traditionaly pack we would use and then this floating pack to compare the differences. I am very interested in this data because if it proves that it can save service members bodies for the same effort or increased effort, it will save the governemnt money in healthcare towards service members feet, knees, and backs. I'll be the test subject!!! I am 5'6" so im already at a height disadvantage for ruck marching. If this can prove that short guys would perform better then it will also prove that the taller guys would also benefit from this. For female ruckers, they too will benefit as maby do not have the bone density for the load in the long haul. I think this can be an awesome experiement if you're into it

    Would love to see a child or a small, petite woman put that thing back together.
    It's an interesting design and concept, and I do think it has some merit, but some practical considerations need to be considered. One, it very much does add excess weight and complexity (and points of failure/breakage). When I am backpacking, I absolutely don't want my gear to potentially break while I'm out away from civilization. Two, I only really use a backpack when I am backpacking, and I want it to be light as possible for comfort. This adds enough weight, that while the system helps to counter balance that, one can still achieve same with a simpler method of packing less and lighter stuff.
    I don't hunt, myself, but I could imagine that you would need a much beefier pulley system and especially elastic rope in there to deal with the 70 to 100 plus lbs, and you would need significantly more volume.
    On a side, and more personal note. 2023/24 is calling you to let you know that you don't need very heavy 1000D Cordura fabrics to get a robust, long lasting material. Look into things like Ultra and UltraX 200 and 400.

    This could be an interesting case study in people who exhibit critical thought upfront (and posses a mechanical inclination) vs those who are quick to trust new information. Mechanics arnt my specialty perse but the mechanism here, in and of itself seems antithetical to the act of carrying a weighted load. Im sure there are some very niche activities in which this thing would be beneficial but walking/hiking dont strike me as applicable.

Minor weight penalty, possible increase in energy expenditure with running (which most people won't be doing), but potentially less knee discomfort coming down a grade when walking/hiking- That might be useful enough for some people because they can enjoy the outdoors again. If you're in good shape and healthy, you're probably good with your current set up :)
