In this episode, Linus is on a mission to find out the best method to get internet connected to his new office. He'll be looking at powerline, wireless and conventional wired networking solutions. Наука
In 11 years, Linus has aged exactly 11 minutes.
and got married and had a kid lol
And this comment was posted exactly 11 months ago.
"Linus Ketchum", #LinusKetchum
13 years later he finally grew a beard
Daaaamn, 7 years ago and Linus looks exactly the same.
Lol
the wonder of make up
also still a liar, "have to move my desk" jk l, he just jokes around a lot
right tho
It's All Good Man Ikr?
2009!! Linus you need to remake this video! 6 years bro!
OH WAIT, HE DID
Link please?
+Ruhaan Kakar LOL ITS LINUS
+Ruhaan Kakar I don't see a link.
+Ruhaan Kakar and get a new cameraman
Even though people are complaining this is a 2009 video, you presented the pros/cons of the three ethernet topologies that are still in use today. It's a great, quick overview for someone who is not into the "tech aspect" of distributing the internet in their home or office. Crisp video, great audio, and efficient presentation.
Very true
Recommend 10 years am I right
James Wood 2020
I just found out about this 10 years late. It could have saved me from running cables from one end of my house to the other.
Hell yeah borther
yeah wth
2020 as well
This comparison needs to be updated with 802.11ac router/receiver and gigabit powerline adapters.
It was made 5 years ago
death6199 Just death Thats why he said it needs to be updated
Okay
so now this Powerline network adapter works much faster these days?
I sure hope so... :\
@@eladbari Not really, at least at my house. Here a 1 gbps powerline adapter doesn't work worth shit. I have 200 mbps service. With a powerline adapter on different circuits on my electrical panel, I may be lucky to pull 10 mbps. If they are on the same circuit breaker far apart I may get up to 25 mbps. In the outlets right next to each-other, about 6 ft away, on the same line and wall, I may get up to 50 mbps. And my panel is a 5 year old 200 amp panel and the house has new wiring.
So glad that Linus continued to make videos after this channel. Great content here and it still continues to be great today!
When will Linus age? Find out in the next episode of Dragon Ball Z
+Mvttyy
Never.
Something a lot of people don't realize is that Linus' full name is Linus Kelly Sebastian-Ketchum....he's related to Ash Ketchum, and everyone knows that the Ketchums never age.
+Mvttyy LMFAO! TOO FUNNY!
+Mvttyy LMFAO I am taller then him and I am 14
+NolanTheGamer1 anyone would have guessed your age based on your comment
Danilo Riffo Good point
Powerline networking - still as underrated in 2020 as it was in 2009.
Is it a good alternative if you don't have somewhere to plug in your router and can't install one?
@@InsomniacStephens141 of course. Now is not so expensive and is very fast, check the AVM Fritz 510e as example
Woah a recommendation from RUclips I actually liked. 2020 really is a weird year.
Old Office
Old Chrome logo
Old case
4:3 monitor
non-gaming keyboard and mice
Windows Vista
DIS IZZ OLD!!!!
I loved that keyboard!
That a office you know. To work 🤔
Windows Vista. That was it. It was looking into my first couple years of college again with that futurish-XP theme.
"You cant plug it into a socket strip" As I watch this video with my powerline adapter plugged into a power strip
you can do it in a conventional power strip, but not a surge protector (which you should be using for a pc)
Jessey Lawson I found a significant decrease in the quality of the connection when I used power line Ethernet through a surge protector. Some variance would be expected depending on the quality if the power line ethernet kit.
Oh good. If Linus was correct, I would have a big problem if I wanted to upgrade to powerline.
***** You are right, I think why he said the is because you never know what crazy power strips some people buy into. A normal strip is fine I run one that way my self (Sending End only) and its fine. But I did notice some of the fancier strips can be a issue and you loose a bit of speed and a longer connection time.I think he was trying to make it simple across the board.
Jessey Lawson Indeed you can, but due to the number of appliances that maybe plugged into your power strip, it "may" have any effect on your signal strength/data transfer speed.
Love that Linus is using the same screw driver after all these years!
2020 and this pops up on my recommended list...OK,I'll bite .
Thank God for RUclips and people like you. I finally understand the internet a little bit.
8 years later and this video is still helping me out!
This wasn't mentioned, but you can also use PowerLine adapters to connect more routers(access points) to make your wireless network a lot better (more range)
thank god I'm not the only one who gets horrendous wireless speeds. I'm sold on this power line networking.
Something to consider when thinking about using power line adapters, they can cause significant interference to local radio users due to the fact that electrical wiring is not shielded and was never designed to carry broadband signals. If your power line adapters do cause interference you could be forced to remove them by local radio authorities such as the FCC or OFCOM(here in the UK)
Due to my previous viewing this month, I have been recommended this blast from the past. Still relevant as well.
Can you make an update of this video? :) I feel that Wi-Fi has improved alot since 2009 :)
I wish they made this video again with updated equipment to see how much these technologies have advanced
you can pretty much assume wired ethernet cable is always better. powerline-wise, it didn't evolve that much. wireless did a little bit, but still worse than wired.
@@guitarFAILjust curious, are modern wireless as fast as modern powerline networking? Another quetion, I have bell fibe internet with just one router, and I also have ethernet ports all through out my house, bell told me that they can't activate those ethernent ports. Are they lying or am I not understanding the technical limitations.
@@maple-leafs13 depends on how good you get the wireless signal i guess. about the wiring in your house i can't tell, but in my country they always avoid helping with those kind of things, because they have full schedule, don't get paid for those perks, etc. good luck my friend
Thanks for posting. I'm buying a power line kit today and wanted to make sure it would be good.
Will i be able to use powerline network if one end is plugged into a multi outlet extension? and the other end is plug directly into the wall?
For powerline connections, could one adapter plugged into the router supply enough bandwidth through the wall for two more adapters, each for a seperate pc in different rooms?
Mack Risbeck yes, it would be the same as having multiple laptops/PCs connected on the same wifi network.
@@anunnakibro Though remember the pie only has so many slices. the more devices actively connected, the lower throughput each experiences.
2019?? :D
Edit: I'm deaply sorry for posting such a stupid comment I was young and hungry for internet points.
dominatorcharley yup
dominatorcharley lol this company don't exist anymore XD.
Dude NCIX is dead. You should have seen Linus sad face in recent video
How about 2021?
I don't have a place to plug in my router, if I use the third method could I essentially connect from the adapter to the router and from the router straight to my device?
Your demonstration was great and I can tell you know your stuff. Thank you very much for this video. I finally have better internet now, but some dead spots and will try the Powerline to get better wi-fi in my smartTv.
So basically balls to walls gaming requires you to use Ethernet.
+Robbie Swope or have a really good internet connection to the point you won`t see any diffrences (we have that here)
+camera31 Same been playing wireless for awhile now.
Wired is def better if ur in a house with other people using wireless also. Not even a chance otherwise. Wired has a near 0ms response time. I noticed that on wireless in some games my ping would randomly go way up for a sec. Wired, never although it had the sameish ping same games. But as I said, some wireless connections are even better than wired from a shitty ISP. As long as ther not getting interference from one of 10 other 2.4 ghz devices. Wired, or 5.0 GHZ is the only way to game proper on PC Imo overall. Balls to the wall as you said though. If u want every tiny advantage.
+Matt Vinci So for playing games like cod on my ps4 u recommend an ethernet cable rather than wifi connection right?
Yeah, although wireless could be alright to, wired is always better by a bit. Ur more likely to not have an open nat type constantly, and have cut outs in performance def. It uses 2.4ghz, so that means a lot of other wireless devices interfere.
Powerline is a lot better atm, I get near-wired transfer speeds and pretty much no added latency. What does happen however, is that when you don't use your connection for a while (say you booted up your pc but nothing else) your pc might disconnect for around 5-10 minutes and then reconnect.
Yes but it also depends on resistance in your wiring, other appliances plugged in your home, distance and so on… My power line on the other side of my house only delivers 50% of the speed I get from Ethernet socket in my room or wifi
thanks for this video i was really stuck on what to do-wireless or powerline.
definitly going for powerline now
hey could you make a video with the devolo 1200+ powerline adapter
That 100ft of cat 5 ethernet cable just looks like a Health & Safety nightmare for tripping harzard
I have seen numerous facilities that tape their cables to the floor.
***** Yes but running that cable over all those boxes and down the corridor didn't look like the most permenent set up
@@TheWolfHowling
Thats nothing compared to his office now
Damn. I watched the whole thing before I realised this vid is 10 years old. And I was wondering why he hadn't mentioned mesh…
Jamie Wilkins mesh isn’t a new technology...basically is Wifi
Great video, thanks for sharing! I have a quick question, can you plug a Gigabit Network Switch on the adapter that isn't plugged into the Modem? I ask because I have several devices I'd like to hard wire with Ethernet cables...
Hi.
I have the TL-PA7010 TL-PA7010P and also the TL-PA8010 Version right here is the question right I know power strips and surge protectors interfere with the powerline adapters. But does other Adaptors interfere with them as well I know there ok with other plugs like Hi-Fi Systems TVs and PC’s and things like things that use normal plugs. But just wondering do other adapters interfere with them like Router and Modem Adaptors.
FINALY AFTER 10000 MILION YEARS SEARCHING A BENCHMARK FROM THE 3 CONECT TYPES THX I LOVE YOU
Same.
Seriously you lived for that long? :O
Damn 9 years ago
I have only a wireless router at home. If I used a powerline adapter to connect to my built pc, can I still use the router to connect wireless to my phone or any portable devices?
I have VDSL 60mbit/s. But when I try speedtest wireless even if I am near my router I always get around 22-26mbit/s, why? I have the router I got from my ISP, should I get a new router that also have the 5ghz function, would that increase my wireless speed?
Greatful for help!
(Direct wired I always get 60mbit/s)
I heard the cable should be shorter than 6 ft for better performance, does this make sense?
In theory, yes. Practically? It's negligible until you get to the extremes and it depends on what cable you're running. For instance fiber will have little to no degradation while a normal cat5 is around 250ft.
Jerry's a bit off. I believe you lose a theoretical 1Megabit/Second for every 100 feet.
Daymian Hogue No I'm not. I work with cat5e/6 cables in my IT internship and we're limited to 250ft/80m. The normal signal degradation limit is 100m but we keep it shorter than that.
It's all theoretical. There's endless variables...Blah blah blah point is shorter is better eliminates variables lowers chances of interference, ect.
jerry lui who would pay for fiber in their house? cat 6 is a better means, plus it can go 100 meters, yes i said meters optimally, cat 5, 6 and 7 can handle gigabit, but only 7 can handle 10gbps
I prefer ethernet... Powerline sometimes drop. wifi is terribly slow sometimes. Ethernet is always fast and stable :P
+Massimo Giardina Let's not forget, you're always connected.
you're* ;)
I know this is old but powerline is the best option if you want to have internet without using a long ass ethernet cable
do you need a network provider such as xfininty or dish internet to do the wired or power line
Does it the powerline adapter work on 2-3 different circuits in the house? And what about E-smog, is there any risk?
ETHERNET! ETHERNET! ETHERNET!.......until Google fiber. :D
***** Yes your right about gaming needs a good ping, now that DICE is testing 120hz servers the data rate needed is going to rise a lot hence the next game has less players as the servers couldn't cope without a upgrade. BF4 started at 10hz now it's 30hz and 10 client side or something like that but they are testing 60 and 120hz client and server side. With 120hz the player count might max out at 18 for now so we can expect Battlefront to be 60hz.
Jessey Lawson “the standard” means that everyone would have it... that’s why it’s “standard”
Google fiber is fast as fu**
So I need 2 Powerline adapters? 1 for my router and the second one to plug into my computer? Another one for my console too? Yes I am a scrub when it comes to technology. Help.
You get one set. The first piece takes the signal and puts it into the powerline, the second piece takes the signal from the powerline and gives it to your pc.
Thanks for explaining.
Jessey Lawson great point, Jessey.
Let me ask you this...besides my hope for this Powerline adapter technology to work much faster than how its being displayed in this video....would you know how much wattage this thing consumes?
I mean, 2 power adapters being hooked into your wall 24/7. Doesnt it sucks up power bills like crazy?
Jeremy Franklin no shit, man! thats great!
How about this model? any good? [theres also AV600 model]:
www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-PA4010KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B00AWRUICG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424905698&sr=8-1&keywords=Powerline+Adapter
Jeremy Franklin So its good enough, and no use for the AV600, then, to stream HD video and more right? :]
oh, and do u really have to plug it directly into the wall?
I was told that powerline wouldn't lose speed buy my netgear powerline setup only gave me half of what I'm currently paying for. I'm in an apt and I'm not sure if a secure setup option would change anything. Is it possible to get the speeds that I'm paying for through powerline?
how much data do you get with internet over power line is there a cap or is it throttled after a certain usage???
Why did this get recommend in 2020
update this video
does an powerline adpater work as a replier for the electrical signal if another one doesn't reach the base for being too far?
does it matter which type of router im using to connect my powerline adapter from? or not? currently i have a wrt4g which im only using to assign ips and have wireless capabilities disabled.
Young Linus .-.
2019 anyone? Also Linus doesn’t age.
2020
Can you connect a powerline adapter from one house to another house? if one powerline was connected to house A and the other powerline is connected to house B?
I don't have ethernet in my house from the walls and stuff (my house is old). Could I still use powerline and use ethernet cables for better connection than wireless?
I'm stuck with wireless at my house...
me too
500ft Ethernet cable is only 31 USD =P
+Clorox2 It's not the price that's the problem, the problem is that the router and modem are in the basement and my PC is on the first floor in my bedroom with very few options to run the cable to it without going through a wall which my parents would forbid. ("The Wi-Fi is good enough!").
You couldn't have explained it any better my friend.
Gsnyds Who, me?
So. Many. Boxes.
I currently have wireless which is good at times but also can be really slow at times, dont think i want ethernet cables because its mess, my house is only about 10 years old, would powerline suit me? and if so what mbs etc would be good?
Can you plug a powerline adapter into a plug extension cable or does it have to be plugged directly into the wall?
Meh i'm staying wired.
im staying gigabit cat6 wired with dual lan until i can get a better internet service, lol
Hellbeast58 stfu
That was way too far for the WiFi test.
There's no way the WiFi could have kept up.
Very interesting video however!
well most power strips usually come with line conditioning and or surge suppression which will effect these, which is why it's advisable to by pass any power strip with these. i think that if they would have mentioned some of the caveats of the power line adapters it would be a more rounded video. these work great if the conditions are right however in some situations you have rooms that are on different circuits which prevent these units from communicating with one another and as well as the wiring and distance also effects overall bandwidth.
Jessey Lawson i actually hooked my powerline adapter up on different circuits the first time, and it worked. It wasnt very good thoug so I called cisco and they were like "uhh, that shouldnt even work"
lol that's interesting, yeah they shouldn't work on two different circuits, but then again i have heard of stranger things happening.
Jessey Lawson exactly you’re not supposed to put a power line adapter on a power strip or surge protect as is can mess with the performance. Might as well use WiFi then. Powerline adapters need a dedicated outlet in the wall to do their job.
Jessey Lawson yeah he checks his facts about as much as you check your grammar...
can we take a powerline adapter to our router then from there to our computer will it increase the speed if we have a 1gb powerline and a 2gb router and connect them and connect it to our computer do we get 3gb of speed
What do you think about using a powerline adapter is it from the modem to the wireless network
2:41 and he still can't hold a screwdriver like a man.
while the poweline adapter is plugged through the router and working what happens to the regular wireless signal, and can someone not hooked into the powerline adapters 1 ethernet port still get a wireless signal while im gaming on my end?
I think so, the powerline is plugged straight into the ethernet port and isn't interuptting any wireless connections. The other way is to hook up the power line and plug a ethernet hub into it so you can split into multiple ethernet cables.
Man, I remember this video. I ate this up. I learned about power-line adapters from this video.
Thank you for explaining the powerline option in simple terms. Replaced my WiFi adapter to my Channel Master DVR+ with powerline adapter and....what a difference..! :)
On my phone right next to my modem I get 50mgps but on my console probably 25 feet away I only get 2mgps so would this netgear work ??
HicKup wich networking gear ? if powerline then it should
ziad emad Im using Telstra in Australia but even an ethermet cable doesnt seem to make it faster
HicKup is it cat5
What is mgps?
TehLuk he ment mbps
Question: I am pretty sure I know the answer to this question but I just received two 200Mbps adapters and they seem to be working well. Anyone know if there would be any issue using these two adapters with a higher speed powerline adapter if I were to get a few more? Examble: I have a 500 Mbps kit connected to my router/switch, would I have any issue connecting my 200 Mbps to the network?
The RUclips algorithm is really some strange and fickle beast. It's really incredible how this man has grown himself!
I have my router connected to a modem. Do i have to upgrade the modem or only the router?
does it matter what network you have for a wired connection? will it make a difference if I have a cheaper network
Well judging from the date of the video 5ghz connection should be almost similar too wired right?
should i use cat5,5e, or 6? this is for my ps4 and how much would 100ft cost?
EXCEPTIONALLY WELL PRESENTED INFORMATION. Thank you for delivering only relevant, VERY easy to understand with clear speech and clear examples of practical application.
Nicely done. The best Powerline review on RUclips.
I been wondering if I use a 500mbps powerline can it be faster than the Ethernet cable?
So the power line adapters must be connected to each device you wish to access the network? So the issue I am having with signal strength to my tablet hybrids lacking an Ethernet port this device will not fix?
I have Powerline adapters, one of them next to my PC is plugged into a power strip and it works.
when I plug it into a surge protected power strip it doesnt work.
What should I do for sharing internet with same speed?
i have internet at home.and my internet speed 16 Mbps. i want to share my internet to my second home which is 400m far from my first home.
what should i do for sharing internet (with same speed) ? cheapest as soon as possible
Goid video. My wi-fi doesn't reach all my house. If i buy and connect a powerline system like you showed, into the router and connect the other powerline for example in my bedroom will i be able to have wireless net on my smartphone and laptop without connecting any cable on my devices? Thanks.
Well done! Good job. I was thinking of buying similar devices and eventually decided to buy cable with 1 more 1Gbit switch.
hi, can I put a wireless router on extender? if yes, is it just plug in or i have to do configuration? thanks
This would depend on the wireless router in question and what firmware it has
For most Cisco/Linksys wireless routers, you will need to shut off routing first (as you don't really want a router behind another router unless you want to set up a DMZ or you want to segment your network, this would require advanced routing knowledge or you could seriously mess up your network)
For Apple based routers (Airport Extreme BS and Time Capsule) routing will be automatically enabled or disabled depending on your network, if you already have a router on your network, it will disable routing, if it finds the modem directly without routing, it will enable routing
The best thing to look for is a "WAP" or Wireless Access Point, these devices are like a wireless router, but do not contain a router or switch, a WAP is basically like a switch but wireless
When Set up properly, you should be able to connect it to a powerline adapter as you would any other wired device
Could someone help me please?
my TP-Link Powerline... doesn't work anymore. i suspect it's because ccleaner deleted the auto-start option of winpcap. anyone know how to restore?
Hello, I have just bought a wireless card for my homebuilt system, but the card doesn't fit in a pcie 16x slot, can someone tell me why?
Hello,
can cat5 or cat6 give power to an ip camera? I don’t want to purchase a Poe
Are there any requirements for using powerline, like a certain router or modem?
hey i was wondering if you could run a spliter for two ethernet cables to run at the same time (with the powerline connection) a quick response would be fantastic
12 years later this beautiful video is in my home
Can someone tell me if Edimax Mini Powerline HP-2003AVK would be good since I am on a low budget and can't get a wire to here.
We are getting Fiber 80/80 and we have AV2 Powerlines as a big part of the network. From the converter we have cat5e cable to the router (ASUS RT-AC66U) and then we have a Powerline (Linksys PLEK500) connected to the router. Then we have on Powerline in the livingroom to the PS3, PC and TV-Box, we have a gigabit switch to those, then we have another Powerline upstairs to the PS4. The AV2 technology is really fast and stable and we chose it over cat5e cableing all around the house
This info is precisely what I needed. My Mac Mini's bluetooth just grinds to a halt when I am using bandwidth over 2.4ghz wifi (it is no longer able to connect to 5ghz due to range) so I need to use the ethernet so I can stop the interference as it makes my keyboard and trackpad useless when uploading/downloading.
can anyone tell me if i connect a powerlink into my desktop, will i still be able to use wifi on my phone?
I have never seen a wireless card that goes into those slots usually allotted to GPUs.
can i have the model of the card you bought?
so if i ran a cat5e Ethernet from my WiFi router to my pc it should"theoretically" speed up my download speed right?
Is having a Ethernet on a wifi extender into a ps4 the same as from router to ps4??? Everything is working fine other than the ping is jumping all over the place
Wireless router to wireless router via Ethernet cable 100ft as router as extender can I get same speed?
I got a trendnet 500mbps powerline from amazon, but it got higher ping and lower download/ upload speed than my WiFi? Why is this happening?
Love it! I've been wondering about this for a long time and now you've answered.
