This is why it's still good to maintain a land line. I haven't answered my land line at home in over 2 years but it's good to have a number to use on website registrations, credit card applications etc. where you never really want to hear from anyone. All I use is the cell.

It's very possible that someone called in to report their "officious opinion" of some "evil-doer." Now-a-days I think they're referred to as "Karens."

What they didn't tell the drone operator/poster is that they needed a warrant to obtain his information from his service provider unless he's listed in
the phone book under the name posted on the video. If they
obtained info from his Internet service provide and he didn't commit a
crime, they have to pay him $1500. minimum for obtaining his personal
info illegally and it would be a crime committed by the FAA.
NSA has a profile on EVERONE with a online presence. PEGASUS was the code name. Now it goes by another. With 1 click... EVERYTHING and everyone around you gets doxed.
When I registered my drone with the FAA, as the law says to do, they pretty much know what I had for dinner when I use the restroom. They get all of your information.
I miss my friends down south with their wonderful colloquialisms... like the term "visiting" used for speaking with somebody.

I just bought a Phantom, I took it on a test flight, I was below 50' and just few around an empty parking lot to get used to the controls. I've been working all week and haven't been able to take it out. I'm off tomorrow and I've spent the past 5 days reading every regulation and safety tip..I registered with the FAA and put the reg# on the drone...I just need to let the tower at my local airport know I'm flying and I'm good to go

I just took and passed my FAA pt. 107 test today after a few days of heavy duty on-line study. What this means to you is that if your drone is used for "furtherance" of a business, you are required to take the 107 test. If flying your drone over your farm results in "commercial profit", you must hold a license from the FAA. While my RUclips channel isn't monetized I could post drone videos all day without a problem, I chose to study, then pay for the test and I'm glad I did. I have a "for profit" video to produce in two days. Better safe then fined! Semper Fly! Gunny J. OUT!

I'm a pilot, and I completely agree that people need to be aware of rules and guidelines. I'm seeing a lot of drone footage of people flying their drone at well over 500ft AGL (actual ground level), and at that altitude you are liable to run into civilian and commercial aircraft. Birds have been proven to be able to take down planes, and so can a drone. It's time for people to be more self aware of the rules, and (not be punished per say) be held accountable for creating a possibly dangerous airspace.

You're a pilot, you should know that AGL stands for "Above Ground Level". You're right, a bird can take down a plane (Sully can attest to that), Can you imagine a drone going through the vanes of a commercial jet engine, or through the windshield of a cruising Cessna 172?
DONT REGISTER YOUR DRONE! Why? That's how they know who to call.
Right! Surely the feds have no other means to figure you out! Alternatively, register your drone/plane/heli and join the AMA and an AMA-sanctioned RC club. Why? So you're not exposed to prison time and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and are less likely to kill somebody; and in the event that you do, you've got $2.5m liability insurance. And new friends to teach you how to solder.

I agree 100%. I started in fixed wing and had instructors and also belonged to an AMA sanctioned club. I had no "buddy box" cables and when I froze a couple of times at the controls my instructor of the day had to slap me to get the transmitter away from me in time to save it.
I was trying to register my first drone and get clearance from a very small community airport and I was contacted by the FAA. Helped me register my drone and we discussed the airport and decided it was unmanned and for me to just use common sense when flying and all would be OK.
Thanks for this video. A lot of people will not follow simple rules simply because they think they are dumb but I feel like I don't mind following the simple ones so if I screw up on a biggie, I'll at least tried somewhat.

You mean UAS. It does NOT matter how many props it may or may not have. A drone is a drone is a drone. Remember, UAS. I do agree with FAA to a point. Why, because there are idiots that may fly into a no fly zone for example the White House or a Municipal Airport. I hold an ATP Certificate (Capt). You have to register a drone that weighs more than .55 lbs but less than 55 lbs and you are over the age of 13 who plans on operating a UAS outdoors. Now, if you are one of the oh so lucky persons that has to register and you have no other choice but to tape your RN on the outside of your drone. Tape your little piece of paper with your RN on the outside of the drone and cover the RN with a black or dark colored paper. There, very simple and very easy, you have know worries about somebody getting your RN.
+Christopher Taylor I DO NOT mean UAS, (Unmanned Aerial System) is the entire package needed to operate the system, which includes the UAV itself, the ground control system, camera, GPS, all the software, skills needed to operate the system and tools required for maintenance. This is just a QUADCOPTER. It DOES matter how many props it may or may not have, a tricopter has 3 a quadcopter has 4 a hexcopter has 6 and an octocopter has 8. Its irrelevant if its a drone or not, a quadcopter is a quadcopter is a quadcopter . having to register wont stop the idiots one bit.

Can't believe this 4 year old video popped up on view list, still interesting. One could argue that because of all the self flying capabilities of a drone nowadays that it would be safe enough to fly in parks.
That drone must be a great help when checking your fields! Take it up and watch for brown spots (need fertilizer) and wet spots for over watering or runoff. If you have cows you could check on them with out leaving your vehicle, and find them when they want to hide. Think of a lost child, this drone would, with the correct cameras, take the place of 10 to 15 searchers. There is so much good that could be done with these "toys" that it blows my mind.
Yep, farmers are already doing that using multirotors (UAV if you must, not drones) to avoid the expense of private satellite images or helicopter time. And there are multirotors that are very capable of lifting an adult that have great potential as search and rescue craft.

The FAA guy said he saw a drone video on RUclips and was calling him about it. Even if he had registered it (which he did not say btw) how did the FAA guy know who he was from watching the video?
It took me about 30 seconds to get his phone number, occupation, and address using nothing but Google and this video.
Fair enough (although this video was obviously not available at the time, I'll assume you could probably have done that from some of his other videos). I just find it amazing that the FAA paid somebody to snoop around RUclips, find a video where a guy is clearly flying safely and over his own back yard, look around his other videos for clues to his identity, search for his contact details and then call him up, for no good reason other than to let him know he is being watched. It's really really creepy.

Faa has done a good job so far imo. This is good technology and I believe only the beginning of machines with gyros to enable on the fly motion as opposed to limited pre engendered motion controls. I have been trying to shuck this idea out of my head about using a couple cc3d flight controllers to make prosthetic limbs that "bounce" with your natural movement. I think it will help efficiency while giving amputees a more natural movement. For example releasing the forearm at the apex to let it drop based on g forces more then pre defined endpoints. Also exoskeletons for als. Als is a messed up thing.
Thanks, D-Ray. Everybody needs to know about the regs. The drones are an entirely different way to fly. Basically you have perfect control of the absolute position of the bird, being a chopper, versus non helicopter birds. This allows everybody to send the birds where none have ever gone before. OOOPS!!! Backyards, commercial flight paths, school yards, playgrounds, high tension wires, hood of a Mercielago and the list goes on and on.

Nice Post! I've been into RC since 90. Club required AMA. And yes, I put my first plane into the ground! (Along with many that followed...) You are right about thee learning curve as I've instructed many new rc pilots. I purchased my first quad copter and have been awe struck by how simple it is to fly! My 12 year old granddaughter picked the remote up and just me telling her, "up, down, left, right" she was up and flying!The FAA wants me to register my Telemaster & Kadet, balsa/stick/ply airplanes. I only hope someone successfully challenges them and over turns, or at least modify this rule to exempt RC planes.
Well D-Ray, I have a phantom 2 Vision plus . It's registered . It is much larger that that one you showed and as it weighs almost 10 lb's if not flown correctly it can cause property damage or even kill a person ! That's one reason RC Clubs require AMA Registration and insurance which at the time was 70.00 a year or something like that and gives you $1,600,000.00 coverage because they can cause real damage to a car or a home or a person. So I get that. Why they were so concerned about your drone I have no idea ! ... This is a cool video !! well done ! Happy Flying !!
create a folder in Google Drive, put those PDFs in it, make it public, then post the link to that folder and everyone will have access to the PDFs without having to do anything more or mess with emails.
Our base has rules but they keep buzzing the top of the trees in our backyard, which I'm sure is below the altitude they are supposed to be flying over civilian houses. I can hear the rotor wash easily.

I used to live next to an airport and called the FAA regarding the planes turning at too low of an altitude after takeoff. The FAA said they don't enforce rules at small airports and I would have to take it up with the airport. So if the FAA refuses to enforce rules on small airports they sure won't mess with a guy flying his drone around.
+gs1260cc We've had our houses buzzed by the Blue Angels when we are nowhere near Seafair where they usually fly in summer. One dude was so low I could see his face and everything wasn't that far above my neighbors roof either. Reminded me of when I was in Utah, we used to sit in the backyard and the pilots would wave to us coming in for a landing because they were so low to begin with. Not to mention the choppers that are not supposed to fly below 400 feet above civilian houses and they buzz our trees all the time you can hear the rotor wash. One even made a night time landing where I used to work and dropped a dude off in the parking lot, I watched as he barely made it over the power lines after takeoff which were across the street from a truck stop.
FYI. All the rules can be seen at the FAA web site. It's regulation 107. Has to do with small unmanned aircraft.
I'm 57, and have been flying R/C aircraft for 40 years. I belong to a local club, and we have our own field, with a runway, work tables, even grandstand style seats for spectators. Members fly everything from small inexpensive electric powered planes to large jets costing $10,000 or more. However, there is one huge difference between R/C aircraft and "drones" Drones have cameras, which should make them illegal. There is a specific part of our club rules that prohibits the use of cameras on ANY radio controlled aircraft. We fly for the fun of flying, not to spy on people. I don't have a problem with R/C aircraft, no matter what the configuration, but I do have a serious problem with having cameras on them. The whole world has gone camera crazy, you can't step outside your front door these days without winding up on somebody's camera.
Gerald Scott just because it has a camera, doesn't mean it's to spy with. that's such a tiny part of people using it for such.
After watching all the videos including yours I have totally changed my mind about getting a drone I have a RUclips channel and I've have seen other RUclipsrs photograph and video trains I thought I'd be interesting something me and my son can get into but there's a lot involved I really appreciate people like you posting videos so we can be more informed thank you

That was the most basic and honest reason for all of this crap starting. I started flying RC helis about 12 years ago and that was about the time RC started to really hit the main stream. Flying planes or helis takes a LOT of skill, practice and MONEY. You also have to be an AMA member to fly at a club field.
NOW, any 13 year old kid can buy a $50 drone on eBay that practically flies itself. So, with no training or knowledge, throw it in the air and have at it.
Even as an RC enthusiast myself, I can fully understand why people hate drones and why they want them outlawed completely. The more I watch idiots posting videos of their drones doing stupid things, the more I hate drone myself.
Heard that a court overturned the FAA registration rules for UAV's, except for commercial applications.
Hahaha, for some reason the word drone when used to describe multirotors really makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I know that it does technically describe any UAV, but it just has bad connotations I guess. Any of you guys agree here?

The United States Army called me about my M1A2 Abrams tank. I'm required to register it before trying to drive it on the interstate again.
You seem to be a voice of reason on drones. If you, and people who think like you do, encourage all drone pilots to fly in a responsible manner, you can enjoy your hobby without government meddling. Drones seem to be getting more notice, both by the "shoot them down" guys, and the "I'll violate your privacy all that is legal" bunch.
In the end, drone pilots will get about as much respect as they show the public.
Just a thought: of all the drone incidents referenced to in the description, none of the drones were being operated safely or within FAA guidelines:
1. The drone was near or above people
2. bad link
3. Operating at a sports event, and above people
4. drone too large to be flown indoors
5. (Again) over a public event
If people just use common sense, this stuff wouldn't happen! Drones _can_ be used safely.
This video was informative. I understand the concerns that may be raised when the government is perceived as infringing on what individuals are doing. These same representatives of the government are unfortunately are mandating that individuals do not sniff glue, eat detergent pods, smoke bath salts, the negative effects of smoking, chewing tobacco and drinking causing labels to pop up everywhere. I believe that many of you would agree, it is natural selection. When irresponsible people to irresponsible things, tragedy is likely to occur. I plan on flying my drone as required because I love my freedom, my money right where it belongs (in my wallet/not paying fines), and do not want my hobby to infringe on safety.

Good message. I do believe you now have to register your drone with the FAA and they will send you a tail # to put on your drone. There is much more info on the FAA website. As for those who disagree with the FAA rules. Well if those before you didn't break the rules such as flying them in the vicinity of an active airport, above people, and many more then maybe the FAA would not be requiring such things. People you have to remember you sharing the sky with other aircraft and you must maintain situational awareness above, below, and around your drone.

I owned a hobby shop and went through the gambit about drones when they started to be sold to the public. Oh what a nightmare. Then up popped the FAA.....Needless to say, I stopped selling them.

I was asked by Time Warner "who did you buy your house from in 1985?" The answer was a multiple choice and one that I never set up as one of the three Security Questions. How and why did they have that information in 2014? My point is if your flying it on you own property and no one has complained or called the FAA why are they calling you? Will they be recording your conversation so they can use it against you if you are breaking the law?

Soon, they wont be calling anybody anymore. When the FAA's remote ID comes around, you'll just get a fine in the mail when your drone (or more specifically, a drone alleged to be barking your drone's unique ID) violates a rule.

I am not fond of drones myself. Kinda boring to me, however I have strapped a cam to the bottom of an RC Helicopter, which is definitely not something you want to fly over people or property. Folks it common sense, be aware of your surroundings, be respectful of other people property and physical well being.
I live in Texas and I purchased a Yuneec Q500 4K, which is a serious drone. Right now its sitting here on my kitchen table acting as my new center piece. So far I have not found anywhere where I can legally fly it. I only have a few acres to fly which is my own property. None of the state parks will allow drones so I feel like my idea of taking it on a cruise or to any public tourist attraction would be useless. Im feel certain they wont allow it either. As much as I like flying it, I might as well sell it because there is no where to fly.

Dumb for people to post their altitude drone videos and dumb stuff. Easier to just send them a copy. It's like posting video of the new pool you put in without a permit.
Is it just me or did he never tell us why the FAA called?
It's all fun until one comes through the windshield of my airplane. That's one of the things that the FAA is concerned about. The windshield of the plane I fly is not certified for bird strikes and a UAS (drone) has a lot more hard parts than a bird. At 115kts it would not be pretty.
I am always amazed at how many people don't follow the rules or even know the rules. I have had 3 drones and reg. them all with the FAA - I only wish the height restriction was higher - ever see the videos from China where they are like 1500-2000 feet up - great shots.

Yep, I'm waiting for that call too.. I'm also a club member which requires that I be an AMA member. Also, the AMA is basically insurance in the event you cause physical/property damage. Your quad there does not look like it meets the 250 grams limit. I also don't fly around my neighborhood anymore. Funny, I started in this hobby 40 years ago with fixed wing. Only in the last couple years with quad technology you get the idiots flying over stadiums, people in local parks or within 5 miles of an airport.. I think this government guy was bored. Glad the $30,000 I paid in Federal Income taxes is going to a good cause.
I don't own a drone. I don't fly a drone. So the FAA isn't going to be able to kick my butt around and therefore I can speak freely and provide truthful information. Public Law 1122-95, Section 336 provides a "Special Rule for Model Aircraft" that totally prohibits the FAA from regulating or attempting to enforce any rule or regulation against persons flying a drone for recreational or hobby use in accordance with the criteria set forth in that law. Mike and everyone else can read about it on the FAA's own website under the heading "Fly for Fun under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft. The FAA has no enforcement authority whatsoever against any recreational drone flying that is done under the guidelines set up by Congress. Therefore unless the FAA has or can get substantive proof that a recreational drone was flown improperly, the FAA has no course of action against D-ray or anyone else who flies as a hobby. There's already been a Federal court decision that put the FAA in its place over this very issue. The FAA wants badly to be able to regulate hobby flying but the Congress and the Courts won't let them do that. The courts won't even let the FAA require drone registration of recreational drones even though the FAA illegally tried to do just that. The proper way to handle a call from the FAA where someone has claimed a recreational drone flyer has violated an FAA law is to laugh, tell the FAA to "bring it if you have anything against me or go pee on yourself" and then hang up. If you broke the law and they have proof they will show up and arrest you and you deserve to be held accountable. But if you flew responsibly, you don't even need to waste your time flapping your gums with the FAA about what you did or did not do. Never incriminate yourself. Law enforcement must find evidence of wrong doing and be able to prove any violations. Make them do it if they can. It will be exceedingly tough to prove a hobby flyer violated an FAA regulation when the FAA has no legal authority to make any rule or regulation hobby flyers must follow. They can claim all day that you failed to fly safely based on the hearsay of what someone told them you did but unless they witnessed it, they will lose their case against you. Hearsay isn't admissible evidence in a court of law. Don't let bullies at the FAA intimidate or harass you. Just hang up the phone. They can't do a dang thing to make you talk to them about what you did. Know your rights!
I have not flown a RC aircraft in years. maybe about twenty years. They have had RC aircraft since the thirties. So why is the FAA bothering us now. I like your expiation why they do it. I think they want to grab more power.
I feel like there is so much information available you don't know what is right from wrong? Even the way the FAA interprets the rules could be different from what we interpret to an extent. Drone pilots are considered pilots now. Will they be forced to be insured in the future? They are pilots correct? If they could down an airliner, then how are they even legal to own? Yet RC pilots have been around for decades. This makes no sense to me. I used to fly RC, I'm also a private pilot. The drone guys call the local airport to report positions, start, stop times, but what about the 10 year old who doesn't? How do you know? Who? The fars for the drones are limited, but if someone really wants to fly one, they will. Regardless of the paperwork. It's the same as a criminal breaking a law on a piece of paper. They just don't care. Over 200k gave been registered, so at least a million have not or more. How do you combat this? It's nuts......................just my opinion. I'm glad they are booming on the commercial side, but even then local law enforcement is uneducated when someone calls in a complaint about one. Errrrrrrrrr.............someday

A simple solution, don't post drone footage on social media.
I know there's a lot of people and especially teenagers who have NO idea about any rules or regulations about drones...they just want to go out and fly them anywhere and everywhere they want...I got one costed 129.99 and I've tried to fly it in my backyard but haven't been anywhere else like a park or wherever but my son in law flies the hell out of it...heck I'm not even sure if he knows the regulations or anything...
I got a call fron the SC FAA because a church whined about it flying over saying i was taking pictures of their kids.
