im fixing my car and it has pinholes at the top caused by rust and this dude explains how to fix everything and make it look like a professional did it to.
Gt video. I had a fight w a boulder...and lost. I have a tiny leak in my steel long ranger tank. It is diesel. I have tried everything whilst not removing the tank. Quick steel potties. Failed in 2 days. Jb tank weld...lasted 2 wks. So far hard soap has worked best...lasted 14 days without further attention. Now I re plug with soap daily. Tank removal is awkward and time consuming but everything I have tried has eventually failed. Soooooooo looks like I am up for tank removal. I intend to get it welded by a pro. Enjoyed yr vid. Thankyou.
I really enjoyed this video and your attention to detail. I'm currently sorting out a gas tank with similar issues so this video was a great reference. Thanks!
I don't know if I would have the patience ! But still, as usual, a really informative video think I will give my garage the task on my E38 !!! Thanks, regards Andrew
Thank you Andrew! You can always do a spot fix too instead of redoing the whole tank. I've heard this can be a common problem for E38s. I had to do this on my E32 years ago.
@@4DIYers I also had the problem on my E32 ! The Blic tank(Half the price of BMW !) has arrived and is being fitted Friday. The car is on 184k so deserves the new tank investment. regards Andrew.
Nice video. Moves fast, presumably because it's long. Would be good if we could see a thumbnail pic of each product can for maybe 10 secs as we go along, because it's hard to write down the names when you say them fast. Links to suppliers would also be handy. Very much appreciate the good filming and explanation.
Wish I'd seen this before getting my fuel pump replaced. would have tackled all the cosmetic/preventative stuff you detailed here. And in SW Ontario, gas tank repair is very expensive, distant, and you have a very long downtime. And as you point out, a new tank can be cost prohibitive.
Especially if the person has rusted brakelines... The mechanic wouldnt want to work on the task because they are scared they will create more problems.
many years ago I fix my tank using JB weld putting in a coin 25 cents and press the coin in the hole wait for 5 minutes and than just cover the coin until disappear with more jb well in one hour was dry refill the tank with gasoline and the 25 cents were there forever
Thank you :) There are rust removing chemicals that are available on the market which you dump into a tank, then let it soak for a period of time. I haven't used any, so unfortunately I can't specify which products would be the best.
I have a 79 Cutlass leaking gas from the tank Pretty sure its from the seams on the side Leaks when half full ...wondering if i should just buy a new tank Any suggestions? Gee...wish you could fix it for me...how much to fix?
i went in for a wof, and did not expect this to be my failure, iv had my car taken from me by the garage, for the last 3 weeks due to leak at the top of my tank, turns out its similar to yours in this video, i told the guy to scrape and weld or surely there is a resin or putty, anything that can be done, he refused for the sake of explosion and insisted on a second hand replacement, he has had three tanks delivered all unable to be fitted. and the guys at the garage wont let me drive it away. no tanks around new zealand, they now talking about sourcing one from south korea. before it gets pricey why wont anyone fix it like you just did? the car is a 2011 hyundai elantra, its been good to me and still has low miles.
Not sure why they'd refuse a used tank other than having possible rust if it's a common issue. Some shops just rather replace parts instead of fixing what's there. At times it can be cheaper to replace than repair, but in other situations they just don't want to be bothered.
@@4DIYers I just need it for work for the time being then I may sell it to an old timer who loves these cars if I haven't fallen in love with it yet. I'm excited about it now
Well you shouldn't have sparks coming out of your tailpipe. A muffler and a resonator, along with the long length of exhaust works like a spark arrester. If you start having any of those components missing or if your vehicle backfires, then it's something I wouldn't recommend. Instead fill the tank with an inert gas.
Out of about the 12yrs I've owned this car, I've never seen one in a wrecking yard and I've only seen a couple people offering parts, but they were easily a couple hours away driving. I could order a tank from the US, but it would cost me $200 just for shipping. A new tank is probably around $1000 and a dealer item only, I can't imagine too many aftermarket companies offering a replacement. The same method was used on a newer 7 series I had, that was over 12yrs ago and I couldn't find a used tank for it either.

Thank you! Ranger diesel, it must be the old Perkins version?
Nice work man! Very clear and concise.
Thank you!
Very professional work man! This tank will outlast the car.
Thank you :)
This is amazing. I came to look for a video regarding fuel tank repair and it just so happens to be for my 1986 BMW L7 hahaha!

Is the fix still holding? Any leaks?
No issues at all, still holding up great.
Well done
You can weld it safely by filling the tank completely with water or sand. You remove the air from inside and space it cant explode
Nice repair and refinish project . Thumbs Up!
Thank you and I appreciate the support :)
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.

What about the interior? If mine looks very old, is there a mixture to treat the interior as well? Great video!!

I second the question, Where's the name or link to the patch compound? it's not in the video description above.
In the video description under the tools/material list.

Man all BMW tanks are leaking lol im redoing a 82 5 series. How long did it take?
How do I get rid of existing surface rust?

Somebody gave me a 1966 Rambler classic the other day with the leaking gas tank, I'm going to drop the tank this week or so, boy I'm scared
Best of luck! Might be able to find a reproduction tank for that too. Not sure what extent of a restoration you're doing.
@@4DIYers I just need it for work for the time being then I may sell it to an old timer who loves these cars if I haven't fallen in love with it yet. I'm excited about it now
So a spark might ignite the fumes in the tank, but it is ok to hook it up to a car's exhaust to "dry" it out?!?!

If you start having any of those components missing or if your vehicle backfires, then it's something I wouldn't recommend. Instead fill the tank with an inert gas.
this may work for my 96 discovery, but i may rubberizing paints.
I would avoid rubberized paints on metal. It may dissolve from fuel and can trap in moisture causing more rust eventually.
Nice when can you do my car . Lol
Not exactly sure but , oh it was by the buck saw right when I got here the second time this stayed sentence
always pour from the side when its a rectangular can.....dont pour from the front
Nobleton John deere
Such an overkill you do realize this goes underneath the car right?
Should I start recording every step of my ways of daze.or video to show the deaf can hear anytime needed to compare my path
Boom
OMG. I’d go buy a new car. :)
Well if you'd like to contribute financially, I'd be more than happy to buy myself a new car. I'm still keeping this one though ;)
geezous.. after all that or you could just buy a new tank for around 200 bucks and be done with it.
