Virginia, the #1 team in the nation nearly the entire season, the team that was heavily favored to win it all, gets creamed by the 16 seed in the first round by 20 points. This game just proved that anything can happen.
Chill out. Virginia wasn't heavily favored to win it all. The UCONN Women are an example of "heavily favored". There are a half dozen teams with similar odds as Virginia. And Virginia lost one of their best players right before the tournament.
@@willowandluka5302I mean, winning a championship happens every year. 16 seeds have only won twice. Ever. Idk how into it you are, but before this game, they absolutely only viewed these games as technicalities.
If you think about it ... that’s the only way that can actually go down, it has to be a blowout, in a close game the experience of the bigger program (Virginia) would’ve pull them thru
My favorite call from this game, one that captures this whole game is when the score is 58-44 and Virginia throws the ball away and the announcer says “what has happened to Virginia?” and then UMBC goes down and drains a three.

I will never forget watching this game. I literally couldn't believe what I was seeing. Any other game this lopsided I would have turned the TV off. It was like I just couldn't fathom that a 16 seed was blowing out a 1 seed. It seemed like any minute UVA would go on a run and come back. But every single time Virginia scored, UMBC would just got a 3. Incredible. It wasn't until like 4 minutes left that I realized it was really happening.
I vividly remember watching this game on TV and reminding myself not to get my hopes up. I’d seen so many 16v1 games where the 16 seed looked good for most of the game, but the 1 seed always won without fail. This was such a beat down tho, I couldn’t believe it.
In hindsight Virginia wasn’t built to “go on a run and come back.” This team played a style of basketball that they would slow the game down and control the clock, which depended on their ability to make stops on defense. Instead, UMBC exploited Virginia’s big, slow play and ran away with this game.
Be happy you watched this live, because this has a high chance of never happening again in our lifetimes. our grandkids will watch these highlights when making their brackets

Virginia is arguably on the wrong end of the 2 biggest upsets in modern NCAA basketball history - this one, and the loss to Chaminade in the early 80's when Virginia was ranked #1 with Ralph Sampson.
They've lost plenty of big games, but the one last night and the one to Chaminade (only #1 to ever lose to a non Division 1) are historic. I wish I could remember where I saw a UVA guy yapping about how Duke and UNC were over and UVA was now the top program in the ACC.
I was at the Creighton vs KState game before this....and left after it was over. Needless to say that was the dumbest sports decision EVER MADE. ! Had tickets to history and decided to go home instead 😭

As painful and horrible as that was, though, I want to say thank you to UMBC. You guys taught us just how fleeting success is, to hold it, as Bennett says, "with open hands." You taught us how to handle that level of devestation, you gave us about the most motivation anybody could give, and here we are in the Final 4. Man, what happened there? Virginia got off to a good start but at the end UMBC was killing them in the paint and killing them on the outside and shooting right past them on every play. Not only is it the biggest upset in tournament history, but I have never seen a game go so bad so quickly for the loser.
If any coach can handle this loss, it's Tony Bennett. He is a man of God. He is positive all the time. He's the reason I respect Virginia. God will bless that coach in due time.

You taught us how to handle that level of devestation, you gave us about the most motivation anybody could give, and here we are in the Final 4. We went from the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history to winning maybe the greatest game in NCAA Tournament history. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Anna Heetderks Finals here we come
This is one of those games where you remember exactly where you were when you watched it. Still gives me goosebumps 5 years later.
Exactly, I was visiting my parents for spring break and had just gotten engaged.
That was so beautiful. I almost cried. I love the Cinderella stories and this was the greatest of them all. Even if they lose their next game, they still are legends.
At least Virginia learned from this and will never get upset again.
RIDING THE BANDWAGON! 16 SEED TO THE FINAL FOUR!
Hey, the Loyola upset has already happened.
This and the falcons Super Bowl loss. These are two games that just show you never to give up , it’s never over over until it’s over. Nothing is impossible when you’re heart is in it.
Yeah, the New England patriots really had to overcome a lot to win that game. No one had ever heard of them before it.
Well, EVERYONE will be rooting for UMBC now to win it all. It would be the greatest Cinderella story of all time. If they play like that every game, it could very well happen. Congratulations on making history UMBC!! You EARNED IT!! NOBODY can take that away from you.
It was the first and it is no longer the last. There will be many more to come. The MADNESS is great
When Purdue lost as a 1 seed it wasn't crazy because they were clearly overrated and it was a close game.
But Virginia were future NCAA champs and got blown out. Truly impressive stuff.
I hope they go far, this could be movie worthy
I don’t even remember who UVA beat to win the National Chanpionship, but I’ll always remember this game.
Exactly
Yepp.
6:20 My favorite moment. When we all realized we were watching something incredible.
Still one of most incredible games I have seen in my lifetime. This was March Madness in its finest
5th year anniversary of the game that put my alma mater on the map. Retriever forever
this is the biggest upset in the history of college sports. even bigger than Michigan vs app state in football
Spartan 99 I wouldn’t got that far considering UMBC were Div 1 conference champs
App state was div 2
Yes given this was the tourney and that was first game of season. I think. Apostate was 1AA but I still think this was bigger given a 16 has never lost. We could live the rest of our lives and not see this again
Liam Mcelroy App State is a Division 1 school. And this is a bigger upset than that game anyway.
UNCtarheels71 I live an hour away from App they're D1 now but weren't until 2014
I can honestly say this is the 1st year that my bracket has not been busted. It's also the first year that I didn't fill out a bracket.
Pablo Torre finally gets redemption....He been saying that a 16 was gonna beat a 1 for years
youngrizzle2003 pabloooo. Lol but that’s like getting a scratcher everyday and when u finally win saying “see i won”. Lol
I like pablo but all he proved is that analytics are only valuable to a small degree. He uses analytical data every year to pick a 16 on around the horn, and hes wrong 99% of the time so he gets no credit here
Your not the only one any more UMBC, FBU has joined you.
I remember watching this unfold live like it was yesterday. Will never forget it.
5 years later and I still cant believe this happened
Free pizza for everyone! Thx UMBC

This is why we love march madness!
Gotta love #35 on the UMBC bench with the fortnite celebrations keeping the boys hyped all night.
And it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving team lol thanks UMBC you’ve scarred Virginia forever! 🙌👍
Umbc gave them the energy to win it all this year
I watched this whole game, one of the most exciting things I’ve ever seen in sports
Top 5 sporting event I’ve ever witnessed for sure
Edit: others include game 6 of the 2011 World Series, Wisconsin v Kentucky final 4 rematch, the kick 6, and New England’s comeback against Atlanta
I always thought Nova winning it all in ‘85 (yes, I’m 42) was the biggest shock in college bball tournament history. This was just one game, but it still tops that
WHAT A GAME! I’m from Maryland, and I’m so glad to see UMBC win!! Those kids deserve it. UMBC is always referred to as the “backup” university of Maryland and it’s just cool to see the underdogs win!
Although it did bust all of my brackets😬
Everybody probably thinks this is a typo and Virginia won by 20, but nope
This will become the foundation for all future 16 seeds in March Madness to base thier upset runs on.
Furman checking in today. How's y'all doing, Virginia?
That casual pass and three at 7:29...just oof.. that just said to Virginia we ain't afraid of y'all
Update Fairleigh Dickinson has beat the Purdue
Man, what happened there? Virginia got off to a good start but at the end UMBC was killing them in the paint and killing them on the outside and shooting right past them on every play. Not only is it the biggest upset in tournament history, but I have never seen a game go so bad so quickly for the loser.
Witnessing this game was so amazing! Hats off to UMBC. They played an unbelievable game.
If any coach can handle this loss, it's Tony Bennett. He is a man of God. He is positive all the time. He's the reason I respect Virginia. God will bless that coach in due time.
The Greatest Upset in the History of Basketball
6:25 "What has happened to Virginia?" - Jim Nantz
How many are here after the 2019 ncaa tournament final ?
NCAA and Refs felt bad, so they gifted them a Natty the following year.
I live less than a mile from campus. There was an EXPLOSION of joy in Arbutus MD when time ran out! Congrats Retrievers!
I have seen UMBC play before, my team, UNH is in the America East as well. It is awesome to see them make history, especially because they are in the same underdog conference I have watched for years!
