    For me, you are so right on this one. Ripley is a jewel, a masterpiece streaming show, made with such precision and a true labor of love. It doesn't seem like it was made in our time. Andrew Scott is a rare, versatile talent. Ripley really does seem like a high art, great movie.

    I think that this series is a masterpiece, and every frame is a work of art. It does have so many cinematic references, that its essential viewing for film students. It adheres closely to the source material. Having said that, I do like the 1999 movie and this series, equally, even though they are very different. Part of the fun is comparing the two -one story that told so differently. This series many be tough going for some as its not "entertaining", or likable compared to the movie. The Damon and Juse Law version is an iconic fashion travelogue, and in that presentation Damon is much more likable, and the boat scene was not premeditated but an act of passion. The series shows how truly cold-blooded the character is, and the series is similar in tone in being measured, taut, foreboding.

    Andrew Scott is brilliant as always - and while I didn't wholly buy him as Ripley - he's so invested and nuanced in his approach, he pulls it off regardless. The cinematography is gorgeous and the direction is solid. BUT, Scott aside, the casting is pretty flat - a monotone, low energy Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles is especially a criminal choice and makes no sense within the parameters of the show. The writing also plods and too much time is spent on small details like packing a suitcase for 3 minutes - while the key character relationships that drive the story feel neglected and underdeveloped. The whole thing feels like a very beautiful, interesting, sadly wasted opportunity.

    • @GipJo
      @GipJo 5 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed, this show could benefit a lot if it cuts down to 6 episodes. I get that maybe those shoots are too beautiful to not be used, but sometimes you have to. This happens a lot in these ''artsy'' media.

  • @PowerDiva
    @PowerDiva 5 месяцев назад +1

    I think the character of Freddie is just supposed to be a male. I'm not sure where it was suggested he is trans, unless there is something I missed. I don't think it would make sense for him to be trans, as you pointed out. If the character of Freddie was trans, you are right it would be a much bigger deal at that time... and considering the care they put into every other aspect of this show, it's odd they would not explore that.... Freddie was only in 2 episodes and only briefly in one of those. Also, after Freddie's death... the newspapers kept referring to him as a man in their reporting. That definitely wouldn't be the case after the coroner examined the body.
    I personally didn't know who Eliot Sumner was, so I went into the show without that knowledge of their background. Maybe that's why I didn't get the vibe that the character was trans? I'm thinking maybe they just cast a non-binary actor in the role because... why not? I don't think NB actors should only ever be offered NB roles. Maybe this was their line of thinking also.

    I have been a fan of Patricia Highsmith and her Ripley books since I first read The Talented Mr Ripley in 1971 and have watched both film versions by Alain Delon and Matt Damon. I didn't find Andrew Scott as a very convincing Tom Ripley. First, he is 48 years old and looks every bit of it in the series. Tom is 25 years old when he meets up with Mr Greenleaf, as is his son Richard. That's almost 20 years difference! And to make matters worse, Johnny Flynn, who plays the part of Dickie, is 41! I watched all 8 episodes and in many ways enjoyed it as I did with Cine Noir films in the very distant past. But as a version of the original book, not for me.

    Totally agree with you on just about everything. It’s a masterpiece, loved it, and I too am jealous of anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. I thought Sumner, however, was perfectly cast in the role as Freddie. The way he saw through Tom’s lies about Dickie thus adding such a cool extra layer of suspense was epic. Although perhaps not as masterful an actor as the others, Sumner still did an amazing job.
    Thanks for an excellent review!

    Haven't had a chance to watch the show yet (It's my binge for tonight), but regarding the trans stuff. It was actually relatively common for people to transition, enter into a new social circle, and never have a problem back in the day. You needed the money to transition convincingly, of course, and for trans guys you couldn't really have a sex life, but if you did that and kept everything pre-transition hush-hush, then you could easily come off as just a new person in the room. Lots of money required to pull it off, but not impossible.

    I'm glad the show is good because I want Andrew Scott to succed. That said I'm not that interested in watching this show. When Showtime announced it they said they planned to adapt all the novels so I was willing to revisit this first story. But now that Netflix has rebranded it as a mini-series I'm like "Why should I watch it then?". I'm sorry but for me Matt Damon's adaptation is excellent so I don't care to watch another version of it that doesn't lead to anything. Especially because I'm not really a tv-show kind of guy to begin with.

    Great review. On the topic of Freddie Miles and the non binary actor: I count it as one of the few flaws (if not the only one) of the show. In the sense that it takes you out of the story. I think it makes sense that it was brushed over, in terms of the story, as it’s of no implication to the character. I suspect Eliot was taken onboard of the show based on Netflix’s quota for diversity.

    Just watched the first episode. I share the enthusiasm for the cinematography and the direction, but I must address the elephant in the room: there are some really bad casting choices here, the leads are way too old for the characters they're playing. Supposedly they're in their twenties, and Andrew Scott is 47!He's an outstanding talent but noone can turn back time, they should've cast a younger actor for this role. Or they should have adapted a sequel to the original, where the character is actually older...

  • @andrewb-e8l

    It was not bad . Acting by the lead was top notch and convincing as a sociopath . A good take on Freddie Miles . But I felt it did not offer any new big bang over the original . The boat thing was kind of ridiculous and unnecessary . The original boat scene was 10x more powerful and dramatic . Some other nonsensical points also . Overall the original was not beaten here .

      @@Crossword131There is no comparison between helpful notes asked for and offered by an expert vs. complaints from some random viewer concerning personal discomfort about free and informative content...

      @@yubantwo2086 You keep mentioning *_free_* like that's some kind of real selling point. Every video on here is free. Were it "top-notch," I'd have remained quiet. After 20+ years in broadcast media, from talent selection to final audio design, I will take my random, unhelpful comments elsewhere. Have a nice lunch.
      Then put the cans back on and get to work.
