If she really wanted to regain standing with him, she should not apologize, but tell him she'll do anything he wants no strings attached, and show real humility, even submission. That would open a fair few male hearts. The dumbest thing for a woman in that position is to say 'I want to go back to where we were', because that means: "I want everything back with zero consequences", and not only that, likely the woman was already sabotaging quite a bit in the marriage, unopposed by her too busy husband, and that's why going submissive, at least for a while, is really a good opening.
