not just a 42 year old backup quarterback but a CFL grey cup winning quarterback! flutie was a great QB! in his day! and if the buffalo bills had let doug play in the super bowl in the season he carried the Bills all the way to the big game when jim "captain choke" kelly got injured they would have won the superbowl that year! but NOOOOOO!! the coach decided that their million dollar quarter back should play because he had made a full recovery from his "injury" so in goes the king of choke jim "captain choke" kelly, aaannndd the bills lost!!!! that move would go on to be one of the dumbest coaching moves in the history of the NFL
Calling Doug Flutie " a 42 year old backup quarterback" should be a crime. He played 12 years in the nfl, won three grey cups, and is in both the college football and canadian football hall of fame.
@@-theislander-5888he’s not saying he was offended or Flutie wasn’t a 42 year old back up quarterback at the time he’s saying it lessens the significance of the player. Say Tom Brady did something when he was 60 and it was reported as “a 60 year old former college football player did this” it’s not innacuracy enough, no one claimed to be offended but more detail could be offered
It, the football, didn't take its current shape until the 1930s. The forward pass became legal in 1906. They used to throw the "bloated" shape ball well enough. See (Charles) “Gus” Dorais vs. Army 1913.
Technically, in terms of rules, drop kick and place kick are the same way to kick the ball: the ball is snapped from LOS, touches the ground and then is being kicked. The only difference is that in one case there's a holder that ensures that the ball touches the ground and doesn't leave it and in the other case the kicker himself tosses the ball to the ground and tries to kick it as quickly as possible before it bounces too far
yeah they took the skill out of it. Being able to do this in a game with people running at you was great to see. Youll see it in rugby league here in australia. If you nail a drop kick over the cross bar AT ANY point of the game and from anywhere its 1 point. Youll see it when the games are close, but no one just goes for a 1 point shot .. although.. It would be an interesting dynamic to see. as when you score a point/try etc -- you get the ball back. from the kick off.
I went to the Patriots home games during Flutie's first stint with the Patriots. I also watched him do the drop kick. I think the last attempt before Flutie was done in 1942.
they also are a type of kick that goes further than any other kick. I ve been doing this kick here in Australia for 30 odd years -- when I was playing rugby league.
Belichick is a legend man, cherish him while we still have him. He cheated against my Eagles and I still love the guy. One of a kind, and the last of that kind
Fun fact, this entire short is wrong! The most recent drop kick was done by Tom Tupa, and is in fact in the pro football hall of fame with his own exhibit for being the last drop kicker. I know this because he was also one of my high school football coaches
Guess if it doesn’t bounce first it is a punt. Like the tush push, someone will innovate. Some punter somewhere will be able to hit these with say 20% chance of making a FG. Remember when 50+ yard FGs were rare? Now being able to hit a 50 yarder (under end of game be the GOAT or on waivers pressure) seems a must. End of game, clock stopped with seconds left, 4th & forever, need 3 points, 65 yard FG, what does the team have to lose? Send the punter out. If he makes it you win. If he is bumped or roughed you still have the ball further downfield with one more play the FG like 60 or less yards.
A dropkick will not go as far as a placekick, so this wouldn’t work. Remember, you have to kick it as the ball is touching the ground or very shortly after. You can’t bounce it high off the ground and then boot it. For instance, the Justin Tucker clip used here was actually a penalty on an attempted onside kick because he let it bounce way too high before kicking it.
It’s the British occupiers’ fault - had they broken India up into ten smaller nations, they’d be more easily managed, and the Crown could have kept indirect control over them to save Indians from themselves in exactly this type of situation. India has proven it simply cannot govern itself without assistance from more established nations. God Save the King
The exact point was that it wasn’t new. That’s why it hasn’t been done in 60 years at the the time. Also Rugby balls are shaped more round (cause there’s no throwing) so they’re way easier to kick in various ways.
@@purplepidginnfl is derived from rugby - even rugby league (not union) has 6 attempts to go the length of the pitch (4 to go 10 in football) the posts are almost identical - try and conversion in rugby, td and Pat football. What an awesome way to go as a player

doesn’t change the facts that he was 42 and a backup quarterback.
not sure how this can offend you.

How fitting that a 42 year old Flutie successfully converted the last drop kick?
Son, Doug Flutie wasn’t just some backup QB…
That's his CFL history coming out.

Drop kicks are still very common juat in rugby. It's a great skill to have because if you're good at it, you're going to end up on the field.

Fr, that's a harder achievement on it's own

Justin Tucker being a kicker and a punter
It didn't matter where you put him. Doug Flutie was a PROVEN WINNER.
And imo could have been the GOAT of the nfl.
It was fun watching him play
16 years old. I was working as a volunteer at the McDonalds in Gillette. I was there for this game. Remember the crowd going wild.
Doug Flutie is a legend.
Imagine if all field goals had to be done this way today.
Its still a very useful scoring method in rugby
fun fact, a drop kick can go a LOT further than any other type of kick.. even a torpedo.
I'm not surprised. We are talking about Doug Flutie here. Now he just hangs with "The BIG HURT" selling Total T
There was a drop kick in the Vikings falcons game
There’s no reason to remove it. It will likely stay in the rule book forever.
If Josh Allen gets in to hall of fame Doug Flutie should
Dropkicks are still a normal (if slightly rare) play in Rugby.

Bro in rugby it's done at least once every game
Fucken oath it is mate 👌
How dare you call him “a backup” it’s fucking Doug Flutie for god sake!
Add the cfl rule that a drop kick is a live ball for the kicking team
So basically it’s just a drop kick from rugby
"Boston College Legend" and not CFL or NFL legend doug flutie is craaazy
Of course a rule will remain until someone takes the time to take it out. That’s how any rule removal goes.
No kidding it will be there till someone does something about it 🤯lol
Rugby players do drop kicks all the time
They ought to do away with the place kick and go back to bounce kicking. Far more entertaining
Flutie
You mean Bills LEGEND Doug Flutie???
Talk about uh bomb
This guy doesn't know who Doug Flutie is.
This dude just disrespected Doug Flutie. Gen Z doesn’t do their research on a heisman winning QB.

Since Pearl Harbor
That was stolen from Rugby 🏉 a drop kick was stolen from rugby in 1887 or something
The whole of gridiron was basically just rugby with forward passes. Indeed, they still used rugby posts for decades after
Should change the point system to include this kick and make the game more interesting. Maybe make it a 5 point score.
Let's go yankees

Well rugby does it that way too soooo. But there ball bounces better
