I love this quote because you can just taste the bitterness from Patroclus despite the fact that he's usually portrayed as a rather mild mannered and sweet character. He still IS mild mannered and sweet most of the time. After all he gives a man he's known for like 48 hours tops his support whilst openly proclaiming that he doesn't even care about his name. But he still radiates this bitterness that's just so powerful.

i am very late to this discussion but there's a small distinction between motif and leitmotif that may be handy. motifs are just general recurrent themes, melodies, etc. shared between compositions, often done intentionally or otherwise to create a sense of continuity or familiarity in a soundtrack. leitmotifs on the other hand, are motifs that are specifically designed to invoke a certain feeling, thoughts of a character, scene, etc. Like how many characters will have their own "Theme" and parts of that theme are sprinkled into other compositions whenever that character becomes relevant. in this case, i'd say it's a motif.
This track left a pretty strong impression on me because I was so invested in Patroclus's story. Getting through Elysium was such a struggle but I just *had to* get to his chamber to advance the storyline (all those Kiss of Styx Premiums didn't hurt either...) One of the most fulfilling quests I've done in a video game, I was so moved when it was finished. I had to purchase the song from the contractor so I could play it back at the House, too.
I know right? Cause like, I think it's the only side quest I've ever played just because I genuinely love Achilles and Patroclus. Like, there is no real incentive do do this side quest, no big end goal reward you're given. It's just nice to see they get their happy ending

After about 60 runs, I've gotta say this is my favorite track in the game. The somber tone fits the area it plays in so perfectly. I always spend at least a few minutes appreciating the build-up
is it just me, or do the NPCs who you run into in every "world" get sadder as you get further? sisyphus is stuck in the worst place, tartarus, but he knows why he's there and still has a positive attitude. eurydice also knows why she's stuck in asphodel, but she's completely alone and feels bitter towards her former lover. patroclus is stuck in, arguably, the best possible place, but he's completely alone and doesn't know why (he doesn't know about achilles' pact with hades), so he feels abandoned. the worlds go from worst place possible to a lush green heaven, yet the characters go from optimistic to depressed.
I think the whole world was built for Zagreus to find that value of home, each character is a representation of that, Sys has bouldy, once you've accepted someones gone for good you can start over (eurydice), its just Pat cant. He was told if he lived with valor he'd have his eternity, his joy, but yeah hes just like Zag, infinitely separated, except at least Zagreus has direction. Pat, specifically this whole ass song. Its him searching every day, keep repeating it, act as if you are wandering the streets, but on repeat, cause thats what hes doing, the song drags his feet, it goes from each place looking, asking, but never finding. Cause he can't, no one cares cause they live in paradise, hes lost but they aint. The song builds up because Pats no loser, he looks and looks and looks, and its just anguish cause shits been going on forever and at this point its just... well the crash comes, the song starts to come back down, and then it starts again

Makes sense if it was planned to go somewhere else at first, but I literally can't not associate it with Pat and Achilles now. It's a good fit.

so ages ago I got an Indigo card for my birthday, and spent it on a handful of books, including Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. If you haven't read it, do so as soon as you can, it's a beautiful book and 100% worth like 10 reads. It made me weep like nothing else, and encountering Patroclus for the first time in game was just extra breathtaking for me because of that book, and I'm just 1000% invested in his and Achilles' storyline. (pls absolutely no spoilers in replies, I haven't gotten all the dialogue for the two of them yet and I'm still kind of in the middle of the game so I wanna uncover everything myself)
I feel a similar vibe to the Soulsborne atmosphere of fading hope. And with this soundtrack... we should prepare to die, and also prepare to lyre. Supergiant games. They made Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre. :D

It's a really pretty sound to end combat with, and I was wondering if it was a full song, or just something to round down the fighting music? Every time i catch it I just want it to keep going!

Have you ever noticed that some visual effects come with a deadening of the percussion? Or the music gets more intense right as certain other things happen? The first game I played where the designers use this technique was Super Mario World.
