I have to disagree with you there. First of all, I think he made equally great music solo and in the band. Sure, funk music lovers are more drawn to the Commodores stuff and that's cool. Second, when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he mentioned his former bandmates and said there wouldn't have been a Lionel Richie without them. Third, it's not fair to say, "He hasn't written a memorable song in over 30 years". If he hadn't released new music in 30 years, he still wrote memorable stuff in the 15 years before that.
