  • "It was horrible. Like watching a bug die on a window sill." Kevin's gym coach Ed Cutlip (Robert Picardo) loses it on the last day of the school year. See Cutlip's first Wonder Years pilot scene (great!) on RUclips at 3:37 of • The Wonder Years Pilot... You'll notice that in the series pilot the kids all wore "Kennedy Indians" gym shirts (being a Native American was 'in' during the late '60s) but in all the later shows--including this one--they are the "Kennedy Wildcats." This clip was originally recorded from KOMO-TV Seattle on VHS in May 1989.

      You damn right we do!! I call that a life’s lesson those boys learned that day. One guy blows his lunch on the gym floor, the class does Six-Oh laps. Notice that he didn’t excuse Joey Putnam from those Six-Oh laps either. That’s how America became the nation that kicked ass and took names back in the day. I guarantee you when those guys wound up in Nam in a damn rice paddy, they harkened back to the words of Coach Edward Tiberius Cutlip, went in guns blazing, and took no prisoners.

      @@kgreene104that is true about turning those boys from being softies into MEN! However, when Cutlip taught sex ed, that explained why he didn’t get married. You do have a point when it comes to Putnam, I’m pretty sure he didn’t lose his lunch when he went to Nam since he had to do more than 6-oh laps in order to fry them and take no prisoners.

    I never realized how versatile Robert Picardo’s acting skills can be. In his feature film debut, he played the very scary Eddie Quist in 1981’s The Howling. Here he’s just a hilarious clown.

    it scares me at the fact how much Mr Cutclip reminds me of my PE teacher when i was in high school.. like for example:
    he always made you say the entire thing of Physical Education and not PE.
    he was hard on you, not because he was an asshole, just because he wants the best from you.
    he talks to the class like you are an adult and not like a bunch of kids.
    he doesnt like whining and soft people.
    alot of people didnt like him, but i got along with him because i got him and always gave him a banter. Lol

    I think I always hated gym class. My father was stunned "What do you mean you hate gym? It's a chance to get out and jump around!" I never really did want to go outside either, I loved video games and indoor stuff and he liked sports, he had to throw me out sometimes. First of all, I didn't like the activities. I signed up for basketball to try it (unlike gym I did like baseball, however) and he wouldn't let me quit because he paid a whole $5 for it! "I paid good money for that, you should stick to your commitments!" What commitment?! I signed up to try it and I hated it, and you want to save a whole 5 dollars
    The other thing thing with gym was the teacher like this. Why do they act like it's some kind of para-military "I've had to push, sometimes yell.............shutup, it's just physical education, not combat training!" And, speaking of military what's with the last name basis thing, should I start calling them "Drill sergeant?"

      Sounds like you don’t know how to follow through on things. Being able to finish what you started is a huge attribute to have as an adult. If you quit everything you try, then you’ll end up being another shlub who coasts through life not doing anything productive. Is that what you really want to do with your life?
      As for the last name thing, I remember pretty much all of my male teachers called us by our last name. Wasn’t a big deal. Seems like you might also have an issue with authority.

    • @thesnare100
      @thesnare100 3 года назад

      @@sherbaum1985 Basketball was recreational activity for cripes sake! Not a job or school, I never said I quit everything I try, don't pull that BS on me, sounds like YOU are the one making assumptions.I can't make myself like something I don't. I'm not the only one who doesn't like being called by their last name, I will if I join/joined the military not school.

      Cutlip is something of a sad character. He has a clear inferiority complex and hides it behind how acts like an angry dictator. The tough makes drops however in the episode where Kevin learns that he's working at the local shopping mall as Santa Claus, and you see a more vulnerable side to him. You do end up feeling pity for him because he's clearly a sad, lonely guy who knows people don't like him.

    Pretty sure that didn't need to be said. These guy's were gym teachers, who did little more than watch kids burn energy on a field or court. These days master degrees are not uncommon. Physical education and health are taken very serious in teenage development.

    I always loved gym, but now that I’m an adult I know that my middle school gym teacher was a pedo. Just one example, he had an office near the lockers and the shower was around the corner. He could have just left a pile of towels on a chair outside the shower while he stayed in his office or maybe he could have stayed near the shower just to make sure no shenanigans went on in there, but he would sit on a chair right outside the shower and personally hand each of us a towel. I didn’t think it was weird at the time, but I was just a kid.
