It's good fun to see this on RUclips and as a member of the Shake Shakes at the time, I'd like to say Thanks to Frank Miller, FlametopFred, cmmab657 and ummerrahh for the comments and kind words...
The tom slides, sounds like concert toms, open bottom, minus resonate heads..Sounds fantastic. I could be wrong but it does sound like it. BTW in addition to the delayed sustain and duh louder volume of open bottom toms let alone true concert toms of the time, they were all mked up into the tom thanks to the open bottom. Awesome sound in any variation.
I played bass & back up vocals on this recording at the Kitchen Sync. It was great fun. I joined the band under the name Motel Ritz. Then, It was changed to the Dave Musick Set. I used a 4001 Rickenbacker bass on this recording. We rehearsed in an enclosed garage in San Gabriel, CA.
I'm pretty sure the Shake Shakes played at my high school dance in about 1979, La Canada High near Los Angeles. They were very good, my friend Tim French knew a lot of hip bands and got them to play. I had a long conversation with the bass player.
1. When was this track laid down? 2. Who wrote the material? 3. Given the tremendous quality, did this get any airplay? 4. Did you get a record contract?
wait - why are they mirror-image on the TV screen? If they were really watching themselves on TV their image would be opposite (the guy on the left would be on the right side of the TV image). I won't be able to sleep at night until this is corrected. Please speak to their manager and simply have them reshoot this photo. I don't care if they have to invent a time machine and go back. I want this done.

Greg your bass playing is a much appreciated and major contribution to the recording which earned you the nickname "Badness"!

The bass player Rick Snyder later was picked to be guitar and marimba player in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band on his last two albums and tours
The album cover says it all. Flametop Fred, you're a funny guy.
Didn't you guys do an acapella song? I would love to hear that again.

I uploaded the second song, it's also great, but more to rockabilly: ruclips.net/video/m0rkfa1gxJ0/видео.html
This song was recorded the same night at the Kitchen Sync. If I remember correctly, we did about 5 tunes. I wonder who has the cassette on this?
