He has so much good music that it's hard for me to say. He did a similar performance for The Needle and the Damage Done. "But every junkie's like a setting sun." It always hits me like a ton of bricks.
I was 18 and now 64. How can one play a ballad so subliminally and then turn around and knock it out of the park with _"Powderfinger"_ or _"Cinnamon Girl"_ with such emotive note bending. And to think George Harrison dissed his guitar playing.
@@benjira Well, for me, now at 72. Having switched ends of the song and am the old man now it gives me understanding of my Father, which when I was 20 I really did not understand him. It is just perspective I guess.
"24, and there's so much more." I never thought I would make it past 24, in the world that I grew up in! And now, I am an old man, in that same world's eyes. It is like a mystery, and a beauty, and an indefinable, interminable loss. Not many regrets, I must say. It could have been better, but it was not - And that, is entirely okay.
I believe this to be a song about deep loneliness. At the end of the day, the old man is all he has. And I find it phenomenal that Neil Young was able to buy a ranch at 24 years old.
Keep in mind he had just finished this song three days before and this was his first time playing it live. It remains the best performance he's ever done!
I love it when younger people discover musical treasures that older Fowlkes grew up with. The 50's, 60's and 70's were the best music ever recorded - and it was everywhere. Keep on exploring those musical treasures and broadening your perspective.
I’m in my mid 60s and I absolutely agree with you as far as the music we grew up with being so much better than what is currently being produced.. The music industry has become a cookie cutter product anymore where looks and songs that sound the same are more important than talent and songs that have long lasting staying power. Look up Johnny Bravo on the Brady Bunch, it doesn’t matter if they’re talented or not, they fit the suit😆
It sure slipped by faster than we thought didn’t it brother, being young wasn’t always great but I’ll be dammed if it wasn’t way better than these days.
I'm 75 and grew up in CA. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young was one of my favorite groups in the late 60's and all during the 70's and 80's. Each musician was a great talent individually. Together they made some of the most memorable songs of those decades.
🎼Hello there! I’m the 70 year old whose brother was born with cerebral palsy. My sister was the last one of us 6 kids to take care of our brother. When she died, her funeral was a tear-jerker. We played her favorite song by Neil Young. “Heart of Gold” and yes… she had one.
🎼Neil Young is 78 years old now. He’s got a Heart of Gold. His son was born with a very involved case of cerebral palsy and he’s poured his heart into him. I love the guy and truly identify with him because my brother was born with the same. I am 70 years old and have been listening to Neil for years now. In fact, my whole adult life. Dig into his work. The man is gifted.❤️❤️
I first heard this song when I was 8 years old in 1972. My brother had a cassette of this album. I put it in the player and pressed PLAY and even back at the time this song touched me. I didn't know why . Now I do.
Today’s music lacks artists showing their vulnerability, especially men. That’s what Neil Young was so great at doing when he was “younger“. You can still be strong yet acknowledge and share your vulnerability. Thank you for showing this video on your channel.
I really enjoyed this reaction. I’ve been watching music reactions for several years and yours made me cry❤ thank you. Neil Young is very important to me and my family🇨🇦
So right, so much amazing music and all we get on reaction channel's is the same old restricted selection Mostly from Harvest, which is so overrated, he has so many better album's out there
@@jameswiglesworth5004 True, but Harvest is still helluva an album, but that's one of the things with a so creative and experimental artist as mr. Young, I think he has an album for everyone. I guess I have most of his albums and they have a great span of different music, from country and 50's rock to acoustic music and really heavy rock. There is even a "synth album", which I also love by the way. =) And I agree, I too always wish that reaction channels would dig a little deeper in Neil Young's song treasure.
@@jameswiglesworth5004 A few observations by critics: ...most of Harvest reduced the lean power of After the Gold Rush to elementary formula. If Young had stuck to the Harvest approach (country-flavored soft-rock), he could have had more hits, but as he famously proclaimed, the middle of the road was a bore, so he headed for the ditch... [Tonight's the Night is] one of Young's staggering achievements... one of the bravest and most moving albums of the decade... On the Beach was savage and ultimately triumphant... a consummate album and a crucial turning point in Young's career.
The reason why we love Neil Young is that he's never been complicated by others people's ideas or culture or whatever, even when he was young. Neil has always just been Neil, and if he decides to write a song about something, it sticks to you.
I played this for my son on his 24th birthday. He, too is a wise young man and he ‘got’ it, as I knew he would. He’s 33 now and soon to be a father - truly, there is “so much more”… I hope I’m still around to play this for my grandson on his 24th birthday, but if I’m not, maybe my son will remember…🙏💕 I love your heartfelt reactions. You always make my day… 💕
Yeah, chills. I still get them after all these years and I'm tearing up too. I love this guy. Our Neil is a proud Canadian and we are very proud of his contribution to music history.
The simplest songs are always the most meaningful🎶 We are all living the human condition, and it just comes down to truth. I'm a guitarist and the 2 songs I love to play at an open mic are, Harvest Moon and Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Neil Young. I don't know if you have reacted to these 2 songs. They are Gems 😊
beautiful reaction. I love that you got it right away. So many of his songs have an emotion beyond just the words he uses. I hope you react to more from Neil Young, or his bands Buffalo Springfield or Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young.
It’s always such a pleasure to see a young woman or man succumb to this main artist’s music , music that changed my life fifty years ago. Welcome in our emotional tribe . Maybe will you try to go further and will discover also the golden treasure that Crosby Stills Nash and Young left us with their music .
Beautiful song, lady and reaction...thank you so much! This beautiful and moving song touches on what we all need and seek in the form of home, stability and love. Both the Old Man and Neil are drawn to the same property in paradise yet they're from opposite situations. Such a simple yet beautiful message.
Sarah, the irony in listening to this version of 'Old Man' is that Neil IS the young man at the point in time that this video was made. But such vision! He is now 78 years old and still performing. I've been a fan of his throughout his career, from my own youth to my present age of 70. I truly enjoy watching your channel. Thank you.
Quite possibly he is. I recall watching a documentary many years ago and I can’t recall if it was Crosby, Stills or Nash speaking, but Neil saw the news reports about the Kent State shootings, grabbed his guitar and locked himself in another room. It was something crazy like 20 minutes later he’s re-emerges from the private room and has the lyrics and chords the timeless, classic song “Ohio” Straight from his heart to the guitar to our ears (and hearts).
Wonderful reaction to this beautiful song! I love you truly take into account the meaning behind the words and not just the sound...both equally flawless of course. It is strange the first time I heard this I was a kid and I am now the same age he sung this...funny how the time goes past

This song moves me as deeply as it did the first time I heard it, more than 50 years ago. Your reaction was so sincere and seeing the effect that it had on you. The same effect it has on me. It causes me to think about different people and different periods of my life that have come and gone. Goals I once had, but never met. Same with me. Well I’m just past the half century mark.
Some reaction videos remind you that great art should sometimes be appreciated with silence.
That episode is the finest acoustic performance by a solo artist in TV history.
Agreed
He has so much good music that it's hard for me to say. He did a similar performance for The Needle and the Damage Done. "But every junkie's like a setting sun." It always hits me like a ton of bricks.
Just a young man sitting on a chair with his guitar... Neil Young at his best :)
I was 20 when I heard this. I'm 72 now. I've kind of seen both sides of this song now. It always touches me.
