Shiv Aroor, Gaurav Sawant, Stratnews ,Snehesh Phllip of Print are the only really few avaiable but highly committed journalists covering Defence and Strategic affairs. We owe them especally Shiv ( he is my favourite) a debt of gratitude since they are badly overworked & involved in briging us uptodate stuff despite their heavy , other assignments. We need media houses to invest in trained experts and get us dedicated reportage. For a nation of our size, the common people are badly underinformed. We have a pathetic record in teaching our own marvelous and ancient military history buried under the weight of colonial caprice and an ingrained lack of self worth. Mercifully we are emerging into a new incarnation of confident people. Thank you Shiv.
Shiv Aroor is absolutely right regarding the number of squadrons. I hv myself written about illogicality of 45 squadrons on vatious platforms. I am really happy to see it coming from international defence expert Shiv. I hope people who matter will listen to what Shiv says. Thanks Mr Shuv. IAF shouod work out the concept if equvalence. How many Mig 21 are equal to Tejas 1A. How many Miraj are equal to Tejas Mk2 etc etc. What about availibility of missiles. When a fighter is used as bomber, can be think of missiles replacing bimbs. Can we think if Akash, MRSAM etc in airdefence role which us performed by fighter in interceptor role. What about drones doing reconssianc job of the fighter. I am not saying that fighters can be completely replcaed by these systems. What I say these are excellent alternatives which csn perform similar job and these were not available when this magic number 45 was worked out. Let me talk litle hard. Turks and Iranuans have excellent YAVs, drines, UCAVs flying not only their dkies but skies of other countries. I am not comparing Undia with USA, France, Russia or Israel, bro we even don't stand infront of Iran ir Turkey. Our IAF has been putting huge energy in lobbying for imports. IAF has been lobbying at times to prove their own research institutions incapable. It is the lack of vision on part of IAF. Actually, IAF too can not be single handedly blaned. Certain powerfy people un Defence bureaucracy,, forces, lack of political leadership coupled eith the intense intetests of foreign wespon makets have brought India to this state of affair. PM Midi in one of his address to forces opened his mind against importing weapons. However, our degence bureacracy and forces have so much gravity that a leader like Modi mat find diffucult to fight out this love for foreign weapons.
Complex topics of defense procurement and fighter aircraft developments brilliantly explained by Shiv Aroor. Looking forward to more of these podcasts.
Amazing podcast. No masala. No drama. Clear and crisp information. I am very impressed by the knowledge of the guest. Best of luck with this podcast series. Jai Hind.
Amazing insights, keep doing such podcasts more often. Some topics which would love to hear 1. Are aircraft carriers really worth it 2. Ballistic Missile program and Indua's reason for success 3. Satellite wars
Great insights by Shiv on the Indian fighter aircraft story. The other key area which would need a discussion by itself is the lack of support aircraft assets that need looking into by the air force top brass and the goverrnment from indegenisation perspective - like refuellers, AWACS etc.
TEJAS is a very potent platform,it has flown almost 5000hours till date & not a single aircraft has faced any problem till now & that speaks volumes about this platform,& the amount of top of the line weapons it can carry thats good enough to give a scare to any adversory, its BVR missiles are top notch & best in every category,& once an indegenous ASEA radar gets incorporated then it will be the hound in the sky, with versatile weapons & sensors for any & every mission thrown at it
Small correction shiv F22 was sent to shoot down a Chinese ballon because it’s is flying at 65000 feet which cannot be ID by any other fighter class they have….
Lot of loop holes in our too defence expert’s views. We don’t need 42 Squadrons? He is probably doing brainwashing and dont want to question govt which has failed completely
Shiv Aroor, Gaurav Sawant is always worth listening on India Today. and two more defense journos from Rakhwala they are No nonsense news and information sharing.
Great discussion, always look forward to hearing Shiv , and any discussion on LCA Tejas is a magnet for attention .. as always Shiv gives insights that are very interesting. Great job guys , keep it coming! Btw . What was that at the end about “do not cross any borders without passport “ ? 🤣😇!
One point missed by Shiv is "Asking for a moon when it comes to Indigenous mil products". What Indian military officials see in evolved platforms in their foreign visits, order here to build in the developing aircraft/ platforms even extra to those agreed earlier. This takes more dirty turn because most of HALs are headed by Mil junk and as result it succumb to military. These intention sometimes seems to be out of malafied intention including monetary, foreign posting/visits etc to either reject or delay atleast so build the case of urgent foreign procurement. Now GOI is such that it is not heeding to old tactics n few appointments are taking approach to Indigenous products into account, hence the change. Many have rose in echolon by just fixing the aircraft generators on wooden planks in labs, dipicted as enormous achievements n got rewarded, it is Shiv who has taken out skin of TOT today in public whereas I m crying for calling it a " Assembly Rights" for decades. You know in name of this fake TOT billions are swallowed n under performance of assembled systems is guaranteed. This was the main clause which delayed Rafael because French were ready guarraty the performance of individual system but not of HAL integrated aircraft but only in French assembled. Imagine a case of HT-2 etc (abinitio flying) after building maintaining it for 60/70 yrs, HAL couldn't make such type, this can be understand by a fool by just knowing HTT-40 story that it takes yrs for left spine Ist n and another yrs for right. Disgusting it was. Enough for the day.... Now rot is slowly clearing. Regards.
There may be good logic in having many different aircraft platforms. When in war no one country could squeeze the airforce /supplies completely due to multiple suppliers. Unfortunately, we have not built indigenous aircraft yet.
The Indian fighter procurement has been shambles, India completely needs to rethink it's strategy. If you look at the current IAF inventory of fighters, none of them are any good except Rafales. SU30MKI - As also mentioned in the video, it's huge and bulky with a massive radar cross section. It can't give IAF air superiority or be on the front line. It will constantly be going on defensive dodging BVR missiles like we saw during Balakaot episode. We also saw IAF planes didn't even get a missile firing solution and they were outgunned by PAF in BVR exchange. Tejas isn't ready for front line, nobody knows when it will be if ever. Recently it got technical issues in Dubai airshow. It will remain a work in progress for a long time. IAF is just procuring it to save face for HAL as they are forced to do. The aircraft has a lot of potential but requires a lot of rework, it's not a finished product as it is. Rest of the inventory is old and useless aircraft, the likes on Mig 21, Mig 29, Jaguars. IAF got a shock in Feb 2019 and they had to order Rafales in urgency. Modi claimed himself that "Rafale ke kami mehsoos hovi hai". Anybody wondered why? Why weren't the SU30MKIs enough to take on PAF F16s? Why did the IAF miss Rafales during the conflict. Rafale is the only potent fighter plane in inventory and that's it. Rest, IAF will have to depend on swarm strategy to overcome PAF during a full blown conflict and will take huge losses during the process. In limited conflict which is much more likely than the former, IAF will stay handicapped for a long time to come and will find PAF more than their equal match with planes like J10Cs, F16s, JF17s and not much in the distant future, the J31s. Against China, IAF in its current form has no chance to go on offence and will always be on defense.
Good show! Informative, Interesting Maybe we can explore and talk more about the future things happening in aviation like the electronic warfare and how it is used in warring strategies.. or what makes a state of the art stealth aircraft etc etc

Shiv Aroor is so much more better when he is non-political. Although I strongly disagree that the number of 42 is merely cookie cutting. Simply because if our technologies are upgrading, so is our enemies. A rafale is as good as 3 migs but so is an an f16. We need to get to 42. Also I would not be very secure with a 4th gen Tejas because Pakistan might one day get its hands over a J20 and get a tactical advantage.
It's absolutely the Mistake of all Other Prime Ministers who were ever ruled this nation,if Modiji would had been our 1 st Prime Minister, Things would had been totally different. With Modiji every thing is possible,Had Modiji been icon before his Birth, things would have been totally different,Shiv Aroo U should be made defence Minister, really.u R an ultimate research person, Nehru, Indira, Rajeev, Vajpayee,Rao,MN Singh, VP, All were incomplete in knowledge Shiv Aroo U and Modiji r the best
Ignorant blah , blah bhajan . Just check up the developments in indigenous arms and weapons development history during Congress , especially ,Indira Gandhi’s rule . And also how India became a space power during Congress time . Stop your meaningless bhajans .
Without indigenous engine, Tejas will not reach full potential as a platform. GE can make only 20 F-404 engines for India as their main priority is USAF who order hundreds of engines each year.
Could we not create another organisation for R&D & manufacturing fighter aircraft’s at different location ( not in Bangalore) that may serve two purposes: 1. A different design philosophy that may be more useful. 2. Competition would encourage improvements both in speed and quality.
Shiv aur Dev aapka welcome hai. Abhi abhi main gana short program mein lieutenant general mister Shukla ko Sun Raha tha . Jismein unhone artificial intelligence ke bare mein warning dete hue kahan ki agar humne is feald main kuchh nahin Kiya to China humse bahut aage nikal jaega. Aur iska sidha asar hamare defence per padega . Aap is per ek conversation Karen. Shukriya.
Sir, what you said on the need for 42 no. of aircraft squadrons, what you said is one aspect only comparing the technological differences between the different generations of aircraft. You also need to look into the fact that there has been an advancement in air defence capabilities in our neighbourhood and also the capabilities of the neighbouring countries airforces also. On broad terms and with all due respect, I think your point regarding the requirement of no. of squadrons in Indian Airforce is not entirely correct.
Shiv's support for MFRA with respect to Tejas mk 2 is largely based on unpredictability. Mr Aroor no where says that Tejas Mk2 is technically inferior. I don't agree with the argument based in unpredictability of Tejas Mk2. We are already flying Tejas for many years, snd Tejas mk 2 is built on that. Major factor against MRFA is that today India does not have a sitution that there is no fighter as good as MRFA on horizon. Tejas mk 2 is already there. India has proved its capacity to develop top clsss fighter control aero dynamics as is already proved in Tejas mk 1. It is only an issue of 1-2 years. We have to see whether Modi Govt would unnecessarily give a chance to opposition political parties to fly charges if corruption? Which country would buy our Tejas once they see India running after foreign fighters. It puts a question mark before the capability of ourbfughter aircraft designing, developing and manufacturing ecosystem. When a private indidn player put a fighter manufacturing line in collaboration with French, American or Swedish company, then you create another powerful lobby within the country to counter indigenous systems. PM Modi is not always around to fight the import living lobbies. Risk is huge. If pressure too much it is better to import 2 more squadrons of fighter aircraft rather then allowing them to setup their shop in India. Except the engine, there is no technology which needed for a works class aircraft us not available un India. Best way is to handover all the developed technologies to sn indian private company and let them manyfacture Tejas mk 2. Let ADA help them. At this stage, when ADA and other agencies have worked so much for many decades and now give the cake to a foreign company makes no sense.
no offense to India today but Sukhoi - Is expensive to be built in India as they have India-specific changes like Israeli avionics and more and i agree it did not make an addition to our expertise in building our expertise in aviation industry
People don't realize the extent of bureacracy and inefficiency in government run HALs. Many people in HALs are busy running labour unions and throwing fake promises to their customers when they have little technical competence. No redemption unless private corporates are involved in some capacity, though not entirely! Today HAL are being fed with orders from government as a monopoly, rather they should earn their orders with their competence!
Unless we continuously work on tech. Nobody gives any tech, even for high price, better invest in R&D shall be pumped up to very high levels. There is no point in constant talks, its the dos which is important.
Kudos to Modi for pushing the program, reducing the red tape and making drdo hal more independant .. that is why things are speeding for make in bharat Also bringing private sector in play which will be game changer and bring us in par with usa, france in next 10 to 15 years
I guess when technology and manufacturing catches up in India, it would, in the future, just be Tejas and its variants, Amcas (replace Su30), and Rafaels. Mig29, Jags and others will just retire. I would simply blame Congress and its money-making racket through defence procurement for this conundrum.
Protracted negotiations are going on and there is enough progress happening. Critical supplies like engine will be held as a blackmail weapon. The leader nations decide how much to let developing one's progress. We have to live with that reality and also plan accordingly.
This was the only objective podcast I saw in this series. The rest were all about glorifying Shiv's journalists career. Most disappointing was regarding the Balakot episode. Shiv should either come out with intelligence data to counter the Air Forces's signal intelligence claims, or like he advised the Air Force, keep his mouth shut.
What a stupid argument by Shiv and he is called international and India’s top defense expert. If India doesn’t need 42 Squadrons? So worldwide specially China expanding its Inventory and we should be just sitting with 30?
Please don't be so stingy about saving electricity or insufficient air conditioning; the guy is sweating!!!!! If you guys want to be world-class, then please be one!!!!
@@nithinkoshy8647 He is absolutely right. The whole shift in defence atmanirbharta is all due to Modi, especially ex DM Manohar Parrikar, ofcourse things can move much quicker and the scope of improvement is huge but we have moved far from UPA era DM in the Parliament saying "we don't have money for fighter aircrafts".
Okay, this is a podcast, I understand; but when it has India Today's name attached to it, one tends to take it seriously. It is with this expectation, hence, that one does not expect that the host of the show is so unprepared and ignorant about the subject matter at hand. One simply does not mix up a Sukhoi with a MIG-29, say that America will sell the F22 to India, and call the MRFA deal as MMRFA. PLEASE.....DO......YOUR.....HOMEWORK. We Indians get a bad name precisely because of the blatant unprofessionalism that is practiced, celebrated and accepted in this country. We talk about meeting international standards and expectations; not in a million years with this quality of work we produce. Charity begins at home; please set higher standards for yourself and others. The Indian (and International) audience is very discerning. Please make an effort to be thorough. Thank you to Shiv for spending time explaining the challenges of our Air force and reinforcing the faith in our homegrown fighter aircraft, Tejas.

A very Genuine Podcast, Both Shiv Aroor and Abhijit Iyer-Mitra have similar view points... making this podcast more credible.
Thanks for this podcast! Love the level at which specifics were discussed. As a military aviation enthusiast, I savored every second.
Amazing podcast. No masala. No drama. Clear and crisp information. I am very impressed by the knowledge of the guest. Best of luck with this podcast series. Jai Hind.
Shiv Aroor - thanks for providing so much information on fighter aircrafts through a short interview.
Fantabulous. Easy to understand language and minimal interference. Loved it. Thanks Dev and Shiv
Atal Ji was a poet and Tejas is poet’s imagination, really beautiful!
Wow...Astonishing to hear insights from Shiv and Dev...Keep Producing Original Stuff...Big Shout Out to all Team..!!!🎉🎉
Awesome Podcast with very good insight!!! Shiv Aroor is one of the few good defence jurnos!!!
Amazing insights, keep doing such podcasts more often.
Some topics which would love to hear
1. Are aircraft carriers really worth it
2. Ballistic Missile program and Indua's reason for success
3. Satellite wars
An insightful, scholarly and amazingly knowledgeable discussion. Now I understand what is *Tejas*
Shiv Aroor has brought out what the Tejas program achieved, what hurdles it overcame and why it took the time it did.Congrats.
Most important thing about the Tejas is it has kickstarted the development of an aviation ecosystem.
Yes
Get started now
Great episode Shiv, loved it.
Enjoyed the conversations
Great insights by Shiv on the Indian fighter aircraft story. The other key area which would need a discussion by itself is the lack of support aircraft assets that need looking into by the air force top brass and the goverrnment from indegenisation perspective - like refuellers, AWACS etc.
Shiva, thanks for providing so much of deep insight into our Tejas.
Looking for a similar insight about Brahmos.
Nice, very detailed and interesting insights. Thanks for the video keep up the good work 🙏

The balloon was at an altitude of 65000 feet. F-22 is the only operational aircraft in the US that has the kill capability.
Great discussion, always look forward to hearing Shiv , and any discussion on LCA Tejas is a magnet for attention .. as always Shiv gives insights that are very interesting. Great job guys , keep it coming!

There may be good logic in having many different aircraft platforms. When in war no one country could squeeze the airforce /supplies completely due to multiple suppliers. Unfortunately, we have not built indigenous aircraft yet.
Excellent content.... Really enjoyed it
The Indian fighter procurement has been shambles, India completely needs to rethink it's strategy.
Good show!
Informative, Interesting
Maybe we can explore and talk more about the future things happening in aviation like the electronic warfare and how it is used in warring strategies.. or what makes a state of the art stealth aircraft etc etc
Excellent podcast
Wonderful show. Looking forward to more such podcasts.
Bharat need to be stronger in Defence. Make Bharat economically big and have big Defence force.

*Havings balls to land in Pakistan😅
*Assuming it was Pm`s firat term , was it naive of him to do something like this
* The action plan if anything went wrong
And any other pointers you can think of.
Not much in extreme detail is supposedly available on the internet about this .
Great conversation! It is time we develop a private fighter aircraft manufacturer indtead of depending solely on psu HAL.
Wonderful.
Because of that Sardesai I used to avoid India Today. But I opened this one by my luck 😔🤞.
There are more long range rockets with Air Force which were not in the inventory when 42 squadron number initially came about.
This guy is doing brainwashing. We don’t need 42 Squadron then why upa time they wanted 126 Rafale? Upa had better numbers of Squadrons then now.
Really good podcast
Tejas Mark - 1 meets all original specs. But Airforce keep adding new which are added into new versions like MK1A

Many decades ago, I had the opportunity to meet Krishna Menon, and he said, "Defence Factories ' are mine (government). So was he wrong.
Unless we continuously work on tech. Nobody gives any tech, even for high price, better invest in R&D shall be pumped up to very high levels. There is no point in constant talks, its the dos which is important.

They will sleep on the laurels of Tejas mk1
They are like Russian T 34 just build as much u can
Without any engine how will Mk2 be made?
Protracted negotiations are going on and there is enough progress happening. Critical supplies like engine will be held as a blackmail weapon. The leader nations decide how much to let developing one's progress. We have to live with that reality and also plan accordingly.
What is the status on the Kaveri engine ? Is that scrapped?
Nope
mark 2 has better engine but at the same time mark 2 is heavier so its going to be pretty much underpowered like mark 1a
Pappu supporter are crying. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣lol
why r u dumb
How Indian is Indian if we don't have fighter engine technology yet.
We’ll have that soon as well.
Jai Bharat 🇮🇳🇮🇳🙏🙏🤟
@@SoniSingh-fl8cfuntil then it’s all talk 😂
@@billshun3963 Nevertheless Bharat is a rising power, as GDP rises so does the ability to purchase and manufacture defense equipment.
Repeating it millionth time: Without a home grown engine, Tejas will remain a hostage to western interests.
But some rumour say... Tejas mark 2 powered by Eurojet engine due uncle sam non assisstance. They delay the engine delivery
Make in Bharat us first time in Independent India is getting boost. All the year’s Politician were busy having commission cut from Defence deals.
How about the Jet engine?
by ww2 standards india needs more than fifty (50) thousand military aircraft. theory behind the magic number 42 should be explained, if anyone knows.
You need private companies which has huge pockets to develop something.
F117 is a 5th Gen first.
In Pak, military decides what to buy.
Pls do podcasts in Hindi
What a stupid argument by Shiv and he is called international and India’s top defense expert. If India doesn’t need 42 Squadrons? So worldwide specially China expanding its Inventory and we should be just sitting with 30?
Please don't be so stingy about saving electricity or insufficient air conditioning; the guy is sweating!!!!! If you guys want to be world-class, then please be one!!!!
So according to him tejas is better than becoming a nuclear power
need 1week show on this or different chnnel
Credit of Tejas induction goes to BJP, especially Manohar Parikkar forced Airforce to induct Tejas and exposed their fake objections.
Retire Jaguars, Mirrage, MiG 29 and Su 30 With Tejas2, Airforce version of TEDBF and AMCA.
Why retire SU30? They still have 20 yrs left
airforce version of Deck based Fighter ?
😂
@@ranjitnair3702 Twin engine Tejas
@@abansalify AMCA will come up in 15 years, so dnt worry
AMCA FIRST FLIGHT NEXT DECADE? 😱😱😱
In the same time it took Indians to make teja without the engine and razor China developed several planes and 5th gen fighters with it own engine 😂
But russia was playing with price hikes spares overpricing and was not giving technology etcetc
Rafale is 4.5 gen not 4 gen
Make in India the right slogan. Modiji 🙏👍🌷
These guys have never heard of serviceability state
Tejas cant fly more then 3 minutes in Dubai airshow 2023
Have u talked with Airforce personnels why can’t they have only few type that is logical?
Kidhar hai MK2 😡😡😡😡😡
Lol! Stop fooling Shiv! Only thing which happened was BJP/Modi. It would have have been work as usual if Congress was in power
@@nithinkoshy8647 You're correct, anyone can do it... but they chose not to do it, and Modi chose to do it...
@@nithinkoshy8647 did you even understand what I wrote? 😂😂😂😂
