  • Part 3 of the restoration of our 1973 Volkswagen Type 2. In this video we swap out the factory style headlights for new LED headlights with an RGB app controlled accent ring around them. The final clip does not show the actual headlights on and is just a demonstration of the RGB ring. With my new circuitry I only have standard lights (high beam circuit and switch were fried), and there is not connection to the running lights, so they are only blinkers for now.

These headlights fit all old Volkswagens (Thing, Bug, Gia, etc) and actually fit all vehicles from this era, and also fit in modern Jeep Wranglers and even some Miatas. @TechnologyConnections has a great video on it here: • Old car headlights wer... .
During this process we discovered more jerry rigged solutions on the bus from the previous owner. This includes the use of wood screws to hold the headlight covers on, and some very questionable wiring that resulted in a fire when testing the new lights.
This video also shows the widely available new headlight cans/mounts that you can buy off ebay or pretty much any VW supplier for about $50 if you cans/mounts look as bad as the ones we inherited.

I’ve been wanting to add these to mine but couldn’t find an image of how they look on the kombi. Looks wicked 🤙🏼

Noice! Short and sweet! Thise buckets look kinda janky...i would be inclined to refurbish the old ones and store them for a while...just to see how those buckets hold up. 4:05 When you went to install the trim ring the whole lamp assembly shifts. They look awesome though! Bummer about the fire and glad you were prepared! 😎 STOC

Thanks. The buckets are janky, and I will probably put in new ones (pending my welding success on the unseen areas first. Currently only have break lights, and no switch to turn on tail lights. So no driving at night yet, and only have the headlights for show. Plan on rewriting the whole bus once we get through paint using the rebel wire harness kit.

@@callalilycollective This is great! You are faced with and solving problems most of us find when we take on a project like a Vintage VW. Bad grounds, disintegrating connectors, chaffed wires, etc. Thanks for taking us along as you attack one problem/upgrade after another. So satisfying to see you making progress as you make it your own :). 😎 STOC

Ordered these ones from Amazon, but eBay is full of them too. The full RGB ones were about $100 on Amazon.

The prices have really been dropping! I remember when these things were $200 each! 😎 STOC
