I’ve watched a lot of form breakdown videos, but the way you describe WHY and HOW staggering your plant foot engages your hips is better than I’ve ever heard. Thank you!
This is a good video Drew. You explain the form very well. I watched a video when you were a kid and you could throw it a mile, but you did not know how to explain it. That is changing, and you are becoming a really good teacher. Thanks.
I've watched about a hundred form videos, this is the best one I've seen that gets all the important points presented in good order without getting buried in too much detail, so following this for practicing form helps make real changes. Emphasizing the rear foot push for the follow through is clearly very important and that is so obvious when watching you throw. Exactly what you are preaching is exactly what I see when you throw, that is not always the case with others. Thanks Drew.
Drew is slowly becoming one of my favorite pros to watch, love these vlogs. The close up on the foot work to really helped illustrate lining up heel to toe idea when driving. Love ya drew, keep up the good work! Good luck on tour!
I can't wait to try this technique. I've doing everything wrong, I just started playing but I can't get any distance and the disc is all over the place. Today I skipped a hole because it was across a pond. I decided I needed to learn how to drive, this video is simple and corrects many issues. Thanks Drew.
this helped a ton, I've been playing ages 13-25 and recently picked the discs back up, realizing how much the game has changed in 6 years from where I was throwing fairway drivers on a tiny course to now, jumped too far in too quick and injured my shoulder trying to bomb a backhand. Spent the last week looking into form and trying to root cause analysis the issues in mine, and the big pointers here are all things I need to work on. Thanks Drew
I was literally rewatching and rewatching the video you did with Brodie today trying to get my hips involved. So glad you added this quicker break down!
I love those little tidbit tips that make me picture doing something. I can be on the course and just repeat "break down the door" to myself, and it makes the good form so easy to remember and visualize.
Might be one of your best videos so far man. I can’t wait to try it in the field. Definitely enjoy the explaining of where to start and finish. Good luck in the next tournament brother.
Keep this up man! I finally decided to break down my form to the basics after about a year of mediocre play. Stuff like this helps a ton. You and Schusterick have been by far my favorite people to learn from.
Something that helped my form was realizing on the reach back the disc should be on a bit of an angle in order to throw flat. It’s helped so much with the consistency of my drives over the last few rounds. You can see Drew demonstrating this at 4:49.
Thanks Drew. I found my low reach back was leading to a high/downward pull through as I tried to get myself level mid throw, the air bouncing was unreal! Highly suggest anyone to get some slo mo video of themself throwing, you'll be surprised just how much you may be moving your disc vertically in your form.
Great tips Drew! I'm sure this will help me with my game. Consistency is my biggest problem right now. I'd also love to see you do one on forehand sometime soon.
Nice work Drew! It's really hard to explain things that come naturally, but every point you made was spot on without going into too many details. People need to figure out their own bodies, and what they are capable of before going too crazy with things. Thanks for bringing up avoiding injuries. I think too many people try to go all out before they know what they are doing, and end up causing damage to their lower body because they NEED that extra 40' An extra 40' doesn't mean crap if you can't walk or play for 6 months.
Hey Drew, if I get agile and ready to move in the tee box, and someone is razzing me, am I still supposed to go ahead and throw, or should I stop and cry about it?
I’d love a video about the non throwing arm and when to punch it down and how to practice this, it seems to be a big part of the throw and is rarely covered thanks
I learned to play Disc Golf before there was RUclips and all you could do was try and was try and figure it out on your own. Back then, the "good" disc golfers rarely shared what to do and never let you play with them so you could watch. Really appreciate that Disc Golf has changed and people are willing to share. Of course, I learned all wrong and have to redo everything as I'm just now getting back into the sport. I've been struggling to relearn how to drive. While I feel like I have the timing down, I can see that people can throw 300ft with a putter and I struggle to get a driver that far. The difficult part for me to see is your release or the pull through. As most videos are only 24 frames a second, the end of the throw is the hardest to see. Where is your hit point? 10o'clock? When you pull through, do you continue to open up your shoulder or do you lock it at some point until you release? If you could do some high speed shots from different angles that would certainly be helpful.
New here to the sport and the bit about the footwork really helped me today, especially the deets about foot wt distribution and contact after the X-step. Thanks Drew!
Sup Drew! I’m from Sacramento and I’ve been playing for a year now. I can already throw sidearm 400’ and my backhand is at best 325’ but with no accuracy on either throws 😂 I can see from this video that I need to plant my right leg on the last step at 10 or 11 o’clock. Right now I have it at 12 o’clock and sometimes at 1. Could possibly mean more rotation and distance if done correctly. I don’t follow through either and I can see why my left arm sometimes hit my right arm after a backhand throw 😂 thanks for the tips and I’ll work on it. GL with the tour and keep at it with the videos

Newer player here but I have done that as well. One thing I learned that Drew likely does without thinking that helps with timing is ripping his off arm behind him in his form. I noticed he and a lot of players have slow walk ups to long shots cause they don't pull through the lead arm until their off arm activates hip rotation right before their last step is fully planted.
Thanks Drew im definitely gonna try and implement these tips in my game today. Im having alot of issues with rounding and a few others but hopefully this will help. Maybe you have some other pointers for me!
You're a really good coach and make the content easy to understand, Idk if you do clinics at all but if you did offer clinics or 1 on 1 lessons I'm sure you'd get tons of people signing up for those
This is the first form video I watch and I gotta say great video! To the point, good length and great that you compare with other sports as well. I've played several different sports and I have been getting along okay with just relying on that. But sports specific instruction will always be ideal.
Huge thanks for this video, Drew. I'm new to the sport and have become a big follower of your techniques and lessons. Took this video out on the frozen frigid practice yard today to get some slow and smooth reps in! Best of luck in 2021, will be watching.
The first step is to nail down the main points of the form like he presented in the video. The word snap is kind of a conceptual, over the top type of word. It’s not a easy thing to define. And it’s even harder to understand what it is in form. One thing is that your hand isn’t opening with the release of the disc. The disc rips out of the fingers. That is where you get the drew gibson snap noise from. But it’s not about hearing the noise, you have to have a lot of power to achieve that and that comes from good form. Then you just have a good grip and the disc will naturally (at the hit point or release point) rip out rather than you having to think about it. It’s just a thing that develops with good form. Build the essential pillars of good form up and other things will start to fall into place. One thing is people will be always be stuck in the slow form stage. You use “slowing down” to work on your form and develop the muscle memory and having your arm speed and legs speed be the same. But then you overall want to slowly ramp up the speed to get more distance. You don’t want to be slow the whole time. But you don’t want to start out like james conrad also. Or to have every distance of throw be the same runup and pull thru. sorry for the word dump.
@@micah_lee I get ya :) I would say that I have OK form but I never seem to get my discs to rotate/spin fast enough to achieve full flight. I've even seen people with funky form throw farther than me. And their discs are spinning more. Heck I've even played with 11-12 year old kids who throws farther than me just because they can generate more spin. And I can see the difference compared to my sidearm throws. I can generate way more spin with my sidearm :)
The main key to getting more spin/snap is to keep your hand on the outside of the disc (or even wrapped back behind it a bit) until the last millisecond of the throw. If you let your hand swing into this heavily wrist-cocked position late in the throw and then let your loose wrist swing open during the release, then the motion of your hand whipping around the disc will create the large amount of spin that gives the disc a smooth, carrying flight.
You know that scene in the Matrix where Neo is learning karate with the cable plugged into his head? I need the Drew Gibson disc golf cartridge injection lol
Interestingly, in the Forehand form the release of the disc IS the followthrough, and so you absolutely CAN come to a total halt at the release. In fact, it is preferable.
Great video. Any specific advice about how to transition the weight back to the heel to be able to pivot on that last step? Also, it's great to see someone not shaped like Simon and Eagle (Over 6' and 75 lbs) that has some serious distance. Trying to make that push to break 500'

Thank you Drew! This has helped me develop more consistent throws.
Great advice man
Great clip very helpful thank you.
Helpful stuff, much appreciated.
Interestingly, in the Forehand form the release of the disc IS the followthrough, and so you absolutely CAN come to a total halt at the release. In fact, it is preferable.
Love from Phoenix. Thanks for the tips! Ima get it!!!!! ❤ 💿 ⛳
Great video. Any specific advice about how to transition the weight back to the heel to be able to pivot on that last step? Also, it's great to see someone not shaped like Simon and Eagle (Over 6' and 75 lbs) that has some serious distance. Trying to make that push to break 500'
