My favourite part of this series is Christopher making a enthused declaration about a movie and Joyce saying “No.”

2000 was a great year for film!
    My top 10 would include:
    10. Traffic
    9. The Virgin Suicides
    8. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    7. Almost Famous
    6. American Psycho
    5. Amores Perros
    4. Yi Yi
    3. Requiem for a Dream
    2. In the Mood for Love
    1. Gladiator
Gladiator actually seems like a pretty generic choice when compared to the rest of these, but I can’t help it. Ridley directed the heck out of it (and would’ve been my pick for Best Director). I would’ve gone with Burstyn in Actress and inserted Christian Bale for Actor.

      5. Brother 2
      6. Requiem for a dream

I still remember the surprise look on her face when Marcia won! I miss those surprise winners faces! Everything is a given now.

I actually think the last part of Castaway is very good. The scene between him and Helen Hunt at the end is well played.

It helps that Marcia's role is honestly a leading one and is playing the Academy's favorite role of a long suffering wife. It's definitely the juiciest role of the five.

I went into Gladiator not wanting to like it but how could one ever not. So great!!! Though #3 of the year, Crouching Tiger, 2, Mood For Love #1.

UNBREAKABLE AND DANCER IN THE Dark make this a great year

    1. *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon*
    2. *Center Stage* (one of my favorite comfort movies, the beauty of dance and the unfairness of the industry and other similar athlete/artistic pursuits; expertly edited, keenly directed and photographed, great music, charming cast with Donna Murphy and Zoe Saldana being nomination worthy)
    3. *Chocolat* (another comfort movie, gave me great guidance as a young person to stand up against conservative family and society, brilliant music and production design and acting)
    4. *Erin Brockovich*
    5. *You Can Count On Me*
    6. *Almost Famous*
    7. *Requiem for a Dream*
    8. *Little Otik*
    9. *Traffic*
    10. *In the Mood for Love*
I loved Gladiator when I was young, and still appreciate it, but there are definitely flaws, trying too hard at times to be frenetically stylized, and some overearnestness and clunky CGI.

Chris- please tell your wife that I was invited to MacArthur Genius Award winner, Paul Taylor’s home for the weekend. He is one of the Masters of modern dance. And I made him watch, Bring It Own. My favorite movie of the day. He loathed it. I was dating one of his principal dancers, whom promptly broke up with me shortly thereafter. True story!
