    Scholz‘s Comeback?
Woidke refused any appearance of Scholz in SPD‘s Brandenburg. The SPD got good results in Brandenburg despite Scholz‘s lack of popularity.
Local elections are NOT a voting on the popularity of the federal administration.

in some federal states they are, in others they are less so. NRW Landtagswahl is very much a kleine Bundestagswahl. Brandenburg has always been way different and continues to be a peculiar state among the east german states, with demographics being wildly different from the rest of the east (and the whole of Brandenburg becoming more and more of a suburbia for Berlin).

@@mahuhude but political trends from the federal level very much do trickle down into Landtagswahlen. As I said, in some states more than others. if you like it, look at the system in the federal state of Hamburg. It has direct election districts with 3-5 parliament seats. So smaller parties can grab also directly elected parliament seats. The balancing between proportional vote and direct candidate vote is less a hassle that way.

I saw that too... 'Protestwähler' has gotten a whole new meaning.
It shows how thin the arguments are on behalf of the SPD. This is remarkable, since they are in power and could simply deal with perceived problems. Action would speak for itself....
just a few examples: Massive building programs for housing and infrastucture would be a classic SPD action (lending money to spark economic growth), reducing regulations on local and federal level, compulsory language courses and tests (directly connected to payments, work permits, residency status), positive incentives for change instead of negative incentives (where are the electric charging stations needed? Same idea as mentioned above regarding building programs), giving schools the tools to ensure discipline (no, not Prügelstrafe... but why can't constant troublemakers parents be fined for the destructive behaviour of their kids by the schools themselves without lengthy trials?... out of the box, but why not?), Reformation of the legal system and quicker trials (young people with multiple convictions of violent crimes should be tried within days and not get more and more opportunities for mischief), reducing criminal age to 12, ... all these things could be done without being undemocratic, racist, fascist or whatever. Some are actually classical leftist policies.

You combat the AfD not by forming hair-brained coalitions, but by listening to the reasons people vote for them and giving them at least some of what they want. You have to govern the whole country, and that includes people who want things that you might not, ignore them, and they'll move to the extremes. I fear this lesson won't be learned in time.

Germanies coalition has actually become much more anti-immigration. Yet this has actually lead the AfD to gain because these voters dont vote on policy but their percieve anti-establishment credentials. If anything it has only hurt their base which is now also less likely to vote for them.

    • @MarcSiegert
      @MarcSiegert 4 дня назад +5

No, absolutely not. This "listening to the concerned citizens" is what brought us into this mess. When other parties try to do something like that, it only validates and strengthens the AfD. This is downward spiral into right extremism, and that is what we are experiencing right now. What you should instead do is to ignore them, follow your plan, modernise the country, create opportunities and the problem will fix itself.

@@MarcSiegertThis will be a long one because I want you to think about this.
Yes - political parties need to argue and try to convince people of their views, but they must do so with open visor. I remember very well how party officials and subsequently state financed media handled the silvester incidents (eine Armlänge, passiert auf jedem Okoberfest, etc.) and the denial that took place regarding gender and age distribution of the refugees (young males vastly overrepresented) as well as their primary migration motives (making money) and subsequently the logical implications that follow... until this year. The only party that openly adressed this from the beginning was the AfD.
Immigration, as it has been taking place in Germany, is (rightfully or not) perceived as 'the mother of all troubles' by large parts of the population. One may argue against that... but that has barely been done. Instead it was simply denied that immigration had anything to do with any problem Germany is facing such as lack of housing, deteriorating education system, violent crimes, massive spendings on social welfare, ... to name a few. Denial does not substitute arguments. Denouncement does not convince the denounced.
The AfD would not be as strong had the ruling parties not opted to simply denounce public perception as faulty (or worse) instead of taking care of the problems associated with immigration by many. -> i.e. where are the millions of new appartements needed? ...
      .....,.
...and this is just about that crucial one... there are more issues, that add up to it-> cum-ex as standout example for massive corruption amongst the political elite, complete incompetence on highest levels (prime examples being ministry of health and until recently the ministry of defense), handling of Covid 19 (Arroganz der Macht), media policy/GEZ, perceived lenient handling of criminals vs strict enforcement of slights, people living better on social welfare (plus some illegal activity) than the working poor ... ... all this sums up to a perception of them up there against us down here and a feeling of a highly unjust society. I have a mixed circle of friends - all who are in blue collar jobs sympathize with AfD positions... ( they may not vote them, I won t either.. but I see why they gain. They adress something real - they promise change. That is enough for many voters)
sorry for my awkward style... hope to get my point across. nice day 8:24

In Hungary we have a similar system, and I think this German method is the best. The district are directly represented, and give the major winner a plus weight, while the list mandates ensure, that the minor parties also receive some seats. Counterexamples: Great Britain, where Labour won almost two third of the seats with 1/3 of popularity; or Netherland, where it is very hard to make coalitions due to many parties.

The table cannot properly capture how this thing works.
29.2% is 30 seats and 30.9% is 32 seats. AfD already got 25 seats from the first vote, so they got 5 extra. Meanwhile, SPD got 19 seats from the 1st vote, which gave them 13 more seats.
      SPD = 19 + 13 = 32 (30.9%)
      AfD = 25 + 5 = 30 (29.2%)
      BSW = 0 + 14 = 14 (13.5%)
      and so on
The 2nd vote determines the overall proportion and the 1st vote determines which person gets directly elected.

Overall a good video, just some points to add.
As you figured out, the victory for the SPD was because of Dietmar Woidke and the wish to have a party to win against the AfD, not because everybody loves the SPD. Iam also not completely sure how much this success of the SPD will help Olaf Scholz, because Woidke didnt want Scholz to participate in the Brandenburg election campaign. After all of this, the campaign without Scholz seems to be more succesfull, and Scholz also lives in theBrandenburg capitol Potsdam, so he was also a voter in this election.
Another important point to talk about, are the percentages. If you count the 4 parties who will be in the parliament, then you see they having around 85%. So whats with the other 15%?
In Brandenburg there are two ways for a party to get into the parliament.
The first one ist to get at least 5% of the 2nd votes.
The second one is to get one of the 1st votes (direct mandate), then the percentages from the second voted will counted proportionate.
So the 15% are the parties who failed both, not 5% and no direct mandate from 1st votes.
But what happens now with the missing 15%?
These 15% will be split proportionate to the parties who successfully went into the parliament.
Means in the end the parties who were successfull also getting rewarded on top.
Its because otherwise 85% from 88 seats would result into only around 75 seats would be occupied.
So after thinking about that, many people in Brandenburg and Saxony wanted to vote "tactical'" against the far right AfD.
To add something - I grew up in Brandenburg and now living in Saxony, so Iam all in into these two elections.
Both - the CDU in Saxony and the SPD in Brandenburg, which both having the function of minister president in their federal state,
told everybody its just between them and the far right AfD and it tactical to vote CDU in Saxony and SPD in Brandenburg to prevent
the AfD becoming the strongest party in parliament.
Iam sorry to say but thats just bullshit in my opinion.
That only leads to the result, that smaller parties maybe dont make it into the parliament and giving many % away, also to the far right AfD.
In Saxony you having the same election rules as in Brandenburg, with one addition - you need two direct mandates (1st vote winners) instead of only one.
Thats the reason why the left-wing party "Die Linke" made it into the parliament, they won 2 direct mandates from the first votes in Leipzig.
Otherwise they would be out, because the only got 4,5% of the needed 5%.
Nearly the same with our green party "Bündnis90/Die Grünen". They got 2 direct mandates - one in Leipzig, one in Dresden, so that they are in.
They didnt needed the first vote direct mandates in the end, because they got 5,1% of the needed 5% but it seemed like they would be below 5% for long time while counting the votes.
This leads to the point that in Saxoy we still having 6 parties in the parliament and only around 9% to divide from the parties which didnt made it in.
    In Brandenburg the opposite happend.
The left-wind party "Die Linke" (3%) and the green party "Bündnis90/Die Grünen" (4,1%) were not successfull in reaching the 5% and nobody won a direct mandate from the firste votes besides the SPD and the AfD, so they also failed to get in with the direct mandate rule.
There was also another party "BVB/Freie Wähler" - they are a liberal-conversative party which was part of the last parliaments.
They won 2014 and 2019 a direct mandate (first votes) and managed to get in. In 2019 they even reached the 5% of the 2nd votes.
All 3 of them are out now.
Tactical election would be to try to get more of them to 5% or to try to get them a direct mandate.
This would have had helped the winnig party to have more possibility to form a government and the AfD would have gotten a far lower share from the parties who didnt made it in.
Ah and to add another point: the FDP ("liberal party" - but more liberal-conversative) was nether a big thing in eastern Germany, even if they are part of the national government at the moment.

    • @nijuga
      @nijuga 5 дней назад +1

Iam not sure what to think about the 3 elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia.
Its shocking how many people voting the AfD even if its known that their federal parties in the 3 named federal states are proved far-right extremists, even the candidates in Thuringia and Brandenburg are proved far-right extremists.....
We shouldnt forget that also many topics were related to national government topics.
The biggest topics in the Brandenburg election were social safety (20%), economical development (19%), migration/refugees (17%), education (12% - Brandenburg is ranked low in the federal state comparison. Each federal state can do their own education program and many people want to have the same education plan in whole Germany (89% in 2020)), criminality/inner safety (12%), climate protection (9%) and the Russian war in Ukraine (9%).
Many people are disappointed in east Germany about the national government (SPD, FDP, Bündnis90/Die Grünen). Also many remember ther 16 years of Merkel (CDU) and are still disappointed. Then there are already 4 "big parties" out. The left-wing party "Die Linke" was once strong in Germany but their internal affairs ruining their party at the moment. The secession of the BSW from Die Linke also made it more difficult, espacially if the secession party BSW was very successfull in each of the 3 elections.
Talking about the BSW, we dont really know what they want at all. Its a new party, doesnt even exist for a year now and got that much success.
Till now we only know that they want strong restriction in terms of refugees and they want to cancel the help for Ukraine, especially the military one.
Its also like a one (wo-)man show with Sarah Wagenknecht (love to call her Zarenknecht), the federal BSW parties dont even having 100 members and the ones who are in came from like every party (exception AfD as much as I know). So so political line is the line of the one person - Sarah Wagenknecht.
If you hear them talking about the Russian war, you will become sick! Its like she repeats Putin and it scares me that she gained that much strength.
But to be honest, she is a charismatic person, but hearing her say dumb stuff, knowing that she is intelligent enough to know that what she says is bullshit makes it even harder.
At least the BSW was the answer if you was disappointed with the existing older parties and you didnt wanted to vote the far-right AfD.
But in the end they only had the two topics refugees and Russian war which both cant be solved by a federal state government...
These 3 election were the last ones, with the exception of the city-state Hamburg, till the next national election for whole Germany.
To see that all parties in the Bundestag (national level government) integrate phrases from the AfD, in the hope to get some voters from them makes me sad (exception the left-wing "Die Linke" but they having internal problems as already said).
Also that they keep saying, "Die Parteien der Mitte / Die Parteien des demokratischen Spektrums" - the parties of the political center / the parties of democratic spectrum which includes CDU, SPD, FDP, the green party and some count them in, some out - the left-wing "Die Linke" against the AfD.
I also want to add that there isnt a big "party-binding" in eastern Germany. If you are a 70 year old man or woman, then you only know the "western parties" since a bit more than 30 years. Before hat, there was the socialist dictatorship of the SED. So the voters also tend to change the party they want to vote. So if they think the party they elected did a bad job, then they will try another party in the next election. There are other effects in western Germany - there a 70 years old person already know at least the SPD, CDU and FDP for their whole life and many stick to one party since many many many years, doesnt mind if they do good or bad in their opinions. But thats especially a phenomenon for the older people.
And now instead of the parties solving problems they keep saying, we need to fight the far-right or the problems with education, rooming and more only appeared because of refugees is bullshit.
The people arent interested in major morality, they are interested in fixing existing problems.
The refugess/migration quastion is a big one since 9 years now and its still not solved.
The infrastructure is desolate in many parts of Germany.
The prices for rooming in cities cant be payed.
The wish for many people to own an own little house is also nearly impossible at the moment, its far too expensive - you will need to work your whole life off if you want to buy one, especially in more populated areas. A big point here are taxes and increased prices for building materials.
The digitalisation is not really here - government offices say their processes are digital if you can request something online and then they print everything out and then putting it into a folder and answer with a letter instead of an email or a online-portal for the answers.
Also we pay the the highest prices for the fewest performance to get internet access. There fiber-cable building up is also way way way too slow - you pay over 40€ for 50Mbit/s download...
Additional, like every office application takes longer than building pyramids in Egypt, if you can get an appointmant at all.
Prices for food increased, taxes on staple foods even increases them more.
The transformation from the economy and the electricity to renewable energy is way too slow.
The quesation of climate protection is also very difficult, because the parties before slept on invest into renewables and climate friendly building and prefered to give the money to the fossil ressourece companies. That lead the national government party of "Die Grünen" (green party) to want to make very quick changes but most of the people cant afford them, they just dont have enough money for quick and radical changes... that lead to a huge decrease in the popularity of the green party, alongside the eternal conflicts in the government coalition.
The question about public trafic, especially the train situationm with the DB is horrible. Many trains are too late and sometimes you are happy if the trains arrives at all and on top of this great service they make the ticket prices more expensive for like every year...
These are all topics the people want to get solved.
Many arent interesed in moral debates - they just want change, so they seek for somebody who promises this to them, even if they cant really solve the problems...
The future will show which way the federal states and the whole country will walk on.

    • @VillaDish

The direct constituency is meant to ensure that local voices get represented, its not meant to be a form of proportionality, so once constituency votes are elected, the rest of the seats are distributed by the vote of the state, ie the Brandenburg one rather than the constituency one. Since SPD won in %, the seats are distributed so that proportionality is clear.

The reason it is split up in the graphic is bc direct mandate seats are handed out first, then seats for people from party lists get added until the distribution of the 2nd vote is reached. The seats gained via winning local elections (1st vote) are not added, but included in that number. If you add the two, you will notice that the percentages add up.

The AfD is populist. They promise that everything will get better by setting up scapegoats and blaming policies/parties or people. This is why they are obviously way more voted in the poorer east than in the west. Just like how the left party used to be very popular in the East. Poorer people want their problems solved and will quickly follow a strong figurehead who blamed someone (immigrants rn btw). Another reason is that the current german government is terrible. Bad policies most of the time, not putting Germany first etc. Bunch of factors. So overall : because they value the promise of better conditions for themselves more than the laws in place that the AfD want to remove. While unimaginable for a majority of Germans to vote the AfD we need to remember every voter is a person who had their reasons.

Its a system used to try to ensure small parties from specific constituencies get representation. First each constituency sends a seat decided by the most voted candidate of that constituency through the 1st type of vote. Then, with the remaining seats of parliament, they look at the proportional representation that they would receive from the 2nd vote and match it. This way they ensure direct representation with still proportionality. I hope that explains it!

Let me tell you as a German living in Brandenburg who voted for the SPD, that the SPD didn't win because of Scholz and the policies of the traffic light coalition, but because Minister President Woidke deliberately avoided any appearances with Scholz and any association with his policies. The SPD would do well not to see this "strong" election result as an endorsement of their own policies, but for what it really is: a rallying of support from all sides to prevent the AfD from becoming the strongest party in Brandenburg, because right-wing extremists should not come to power. I am extremely dissatisfied with the current policies, but I cannot vote for right-wing extremists and idiots like the AfD and BSW.
In state elections, the focus should be on state policies and not on federal politics, but unfortunately, many people cannot separate the two and vote solely based on federal politics.

In my opinion it was a shame that BVB didn't get a constituency. I was hoping for an SPD BVB CDU coalition. SPD CDU were only 1 seat away from forming coalition! Truly a shame :/

On one end I wish AFD and BSW would put aside their economical views and make compromise for the greater good, however BSW is essentially forcing the the “mainstream” parties to work with them, and through this we’ll never the less get some of AFD’s social policies.

Let's be honest, Nazis and Afd are not the same thing and people who claim that they're same are ignorant people who closes eyes to illegal migration crisis. None of the greens or sdp wants to find a solution for migration crisis therefore media agencies blame afd for being nazi while there is a no clear evidence on it.

It feels like anything that isn't left-leaning is considered far right since the last few years. While Leftextremist ideologies like Marxism and other forms of authoritarian Communism and even Anarchism are suddenly ok and nothing to be worried about.
Universities have become breeding-grounds for Leftextremists, those radicalised Students moved up into Politics in recent years and moved the bar further and further to the left. Legends like Chancellor Helmut Schmidt (SPD), are considered far-right by many of them today.

Political parties in Germany are very hard to outlaw, because they are protected by the insitution for very good reasons. The AfD can and will be outlawed only if they pose an actual, immediate, threat to the basic democratic order.

Afd is a right wing party with the same legality of existing like die Linke. Just because you don't like this party doesn't mean that it should be illegal. And given how many voters are voting for tgem, it seems the problems that mainstream parties made are a big ones.
