  • Edit: This was one of my first published video critiques, so if you think the quality is trashy I totally agree. If you're interested enough to check out my more recent posts I think you'll find a much higher quality product, but I'll most likely go back to remake this video later down the line when I can find some more free time.
A video essay critique on the original Dungeon Siege game as well as the Legends of Aranna expansion, Multiplayer campaign, and the Yesterhaven/Return to Arhok demo's. This is a pre-warning that there will be spoilers as I unceremoniously summarize the plots of every campaign.
Thank you for watching and if you have any feedback please leave a comment on the video letting me know what you liked or disliked about the video. This is my first real video essay so i'm more concerned with making a better product than actually making any money on it, so any recomendations are helpful.

My father taught me even the potion drinking anim could be cancelled.
He played this game up to the days before his sudden passing.
    I miss him.

This game is a treasure, as I'm sure that is how you feel about your father since you miss him, lamenting his passing. May this game be a heart-warming monument to his memory. Peace be with you.

    Holy shit!
I loved this game as a kid.
I still remember talking to my friends in the schoolyard about how the heck we found our way through those endless dungeons.
Especially Wesrin Cross or the swamp :D And then there were those hidden bosses like the dragon in the cliffs!
God, I miss those times. This feeling when after hours of terror fighting hordes of terrifying creatures you finally find a small, completely wrecked town with only a few survivers or a camp of merchants out in the nowhere. I wanted to stay in Glacern. I was too afraid going on, didn't want to leave the citizens alone. I took me hours to brace myself and continue the journey.
What a masterpiece this game was. Never found something like Dungeon Siege 1 again.
I truly doubt there is one.
Thank you so much for this video.

I watched the whole thing and am really blown away by the thoughtfulness of your commentary. You've gracefully put into words some of the feelings I've had after playing this game for hundreds of hours across almost two decades, and even pointed out some things I never considered. Especially as a meme/masochist playthrough enjoyer, I think you really hit the nail on the head about Dungeon Siege's difficulty and rewards being largely self-moderated and self-fulfilling, like the developers really respected the variety of approaches players could have to their fantasy experience and focused on making a consistent and engaging (yet linear) world. I think you could have also mentioned how the physics engine provides some creative uses of projectile attacks, and how you can either essentially let the game play itself inefficiently or hyper-focus on kiting and dodging attack animations for extreme minmax (calling back to the "self-serve" difficulty). I'm unfortunately not familiar with most of the other games you've covered on your channel, but am looking forward to watching your WoW:SL analysis. Your video was in the related section for another Dungeon Siege review, and I'm really happy to have found it.
    A few small notes:
    1) You can cancel the potion-drinking animation with the pick-up-nearby-items command, though this is obviously a bug and doesn't invalidate what you said about the surrounding design decisions
    2) The game "crashing" after the final boss is apparently specific to the Steam version. As I remember, the end cut-scene essentially just says "good job" and then lets you keep running around the beaten game
    3) re: 1:08:50 oh man, if you wanted your Dungeon Siege experience to really come full circle, you should have opened that last door
And if you're taking suggestions, you might really enjoy playing and writing a script about the original Guild Wars.

Came back to watch this review, very nicely structured. Wanted to say I've always hated the LoA expansion because of the item pool. The original item pool had a sort of natural visual progression in terms of how tough weapons and armor actually looked (both in the inventory and on the character model) and always with some ground in reality, which very few games have ever got right. LoA gives you clock hammers, fishbone swords and leaf armors, which is great for variety, but throws that natural progression out the window. I'll always remember equipping my character with a crusader plate (256 defense IIRC) which came in clutch against the Droog rebel army. Man I loved the images of the weapons and armor in the original.

This game was so unique, playing this with a childhood friend. We had several playthroughs, a returning prank was to stand on the elevators, waiting for your mate, and just right before he stepped on the elevator you would press the lever, this way he would have to wait until the elevator came back :D
Hammerwatch 2 a recent game gives me somewhat same vibes. Different art style, really good.

The music, the ambience, the addiction of kill monster after monster, with a linear story which is here just an excuse to maintain us exploring that immense world without loading screens. I remember stop my travels to just admire those 3D landscapes, so deep and live, by that time was incredible, and even today still difficult to make such kind of games, in fact, they are mostly the exception.

I remember going through the multi-player mode and people would always accuse me of using cheats because of the chicken spell and pimp hat. Then I'd walk them to the Disco Room.
I don't know how many times I went through both games in multi-player. It was a great time.

One thing that nobody mentions is that Dungeon Siege (both 1 and 2) has one of the best spells in gaming: Transmute, which turns an item into gold roughly around the its sell value.

God, what do I have to do to get a modern Remaster of this and, especially, Dungeon Siege 2? DS 2 is one of my all time favorites. Content you produced here is very good, the quality of sound and such ... you understand. Don't matter. I am not here to check the quality of a Marantz, am I? Also, you should really do a DS 2 critique video. Seems odd that the way you review franchises(basically) and to leave that one off(DS 3 is ... eh, whatever).

@@goransekulic3671 Its one of the lines pertaining to like XP gain per cast in the spell file. Each spell gives its own amount of XP per cast. You can increase it to give more XP per cast. It works in really small numbers lol. It wouldnt be hard to make it suuuuper OP.

Is there a guide on how to play solo in multiplayer?

  • @secondentertainment5897
    @secondentertainment5897 2 года назад

I released a 2-hour Dungeon Siege series video just a month after you released yours, and I'm seeing this video just now! Looks like we were both influenced by figures like Joe Anderson and ended up shooting a DS video over the Covid quarantine:) We even have the same robo-gear intro! I cannot thank you enough for this video as I had been itching to see Dungeon Siege critiqued this way (in a video essay). Not only do we make similar points but yours are far more articulate and compact. I never played multiplayer as a kid because I hated not having companions so my knowledge was a bit more limited on certain aspects. I also did analysis on DS2, and 1 hour of my analysis is dedicated to Dungeon Siege 4 or how to craft a good sequel, but it is very challenging to find someone who has both the love for this party-based hack and slash bonanza with no teleporters in a seamless world, and has the knowledge to comment on game design. Dungeon Siege 1 had so many cool ideas but it is hard to assess their feasibility today when thinking solo. As you have said, the game evolves into such a unique adventure game that there are virtually no other games like this in many aspects. So if you ever would like to talk about Dungeon Siege 1 PLEASE let me know and we'll chat over Discord! (Jinglemisk#7682)
A terrific video as a channel starter, great work!
