- 0:00 - Introduction
Did you recently treat yourself to a double kick pedal for the first time? Or have you had one on your kit for a while but the slave pedal has been gathering dust? Get your feet flying with these five songs even a beginner can learn!
All of these patterns are relatively straight forward while still sounding cool, and they're fun to play, even if you're starting at a slower tempo. And that's the key: start slow. You'll be able to improve your control and lock in the muscle memory you'll need to play faster tempos.
1. 0:36 - "Red Hot" - Motley Crue
238 BPM sounds really fast, but it's just 8th notes on the kick. If you start slow, you'll be able to pull it off, no problem. It's a simple right left on the feet with a basic rock backbeat on your hands.
2. 1:46 - "The Four Horsemen" - Metallica
Imagine taking the famous double bass triplet pattern from "One" and cutting it in half. This gallop-style burst is an 8th note triplet on the kicks, followed by a snare hit.
3. 3:15 - "Down With The Sickness" - Disturbed
This interesting syncopated double kick pattern has a cool offbeat snare drum shot at the end. Try it yourself!
4. 04:32 - "Domination" - Pantera
With big open quarter notes on the hands, the double bass pattern consists of syncopated 16th notes. It's a four bar phrase with a fun variation in the final bar. Learning this will help you work on endurance and nail those off-beat shots.
5. 6:18 - "Under A Glass Moon" - Dream Theater
Here's another cool syncopated 16th note rhythm. Your hands aren't just doing a standard backbeat this time; it's got a little more creativity to it.

If you're just starting with double kick I would recommend anything from Meshuggah.
Lol
How dare you
I think that would be too fast for beginning double bass players, but I get your point 😂
Totally agree, War and Bleed is the perfect example
@@anandafitriananshary3312 nah, clockworks and the demons name is surveillance are the perfect beginner songs
Usually, I don't care about double bass. This guy makes me want invest in a double pedal. Great video!
Double bass pedal is almost mandatory for a wide-range drummer, you can do a lot of accentuation, fills, blast-beats and nice power solo parts within a song, even far out of the metal-area of genres.
@@MagicChris86 I'm definitely going to start checking out double pedals now. I'm a little bit tight on money right now but Christmas is coming up so who knows
I didn't get a double bass pedal for over 10 years because i was always into punk and smelly from NOFX doesn't use a double kick... I regret not getting it sooner. I've been rocking the double for about 13 years now and my left foot still can't quite keep up with my right. On the other hand I think if I would have got a double pedal right away I probably wouldn't have learned to do doubles with my feet
Def not mandatory. There’s a guy on RUclips I think his name is estifano or something like that. He plays songs like Dance of eternity with a single pedal.
@@larrytate1657 It’s not “mandatory.” But it’s an advantage. He still uses double pedals, even in his band.
Well. Those *parts* certainly are easy, but at least Domination and Under a Glass Moon have some other parts that are way harder for a beginner.
Yeah I agree, I play those and was kinda hurt at the label of "easy" with two songs I originally had to put a lot of effort into learning.
@@timb4351 No need to be so formal with me friend, I agree he is an excellent motivational tutor, forgive me if it had appeared that my opinion may be otherwise. I wish you the best on your learning endeavors.
Ohhh yeah!!! meter changes and everything..
I know most people know Metallica's The Four Horsemen, but Megadeth's Mechanix is also great if you want to attempt the same song at a much faster tempo.
It doesn’t have the original bass drum pattern tho
Shepherd of fire by Avenged Sevenfold is also a great song to start with!!!
I was surprised that one didn’t make it, that’s what I was planning on learning when I get my double bass pedal because it seemed easy
The first thing that came to mind was under a glass moon, glad it was there! Great instructional video, keep it up!
What a great song. Thanks, Bruno!
That was a hard I was only able to play the inteo
I love Aaron's Lessons. Firstly cuz my name is also Aaron haha.
He moves quick and doesnt waste time. Just shows the beat, explains it real quick and we dive on in. Too many instructors overcomplicate things by over explaining, and not just at drumeo, so many RUclips teachers are guilty of it
I hear you. But maybe you guilty of being impatience? watch it, impatience is the enemy of drumming progress. Real progress requires time. The world is much more faster now, but you still have a 24hs day, 2 hands and feets and one brain...
@@pacmanlp8876 ain't nobody got time for that
I hope to see more of Aaron's stuff in this channel, he has a great way of explaining concepts, as a begginer, its really valuable for me. Thanks Drumeo!
You have a teaching gift! I bought a double bass pedal for giggles many months ago but haven't really used it yet! Makes we want to go try these songs.
So great to be here one of the first people of the public to watch this amazing lesson from Drumeo
Thanks so much, Vince!

Under the glass moon is super fun, prog music + double bass is just so much fun to play
Please bring more such videos.
These videos are really helpful for beginner drummers to understand and dissect complex songs in an easier way.
Such a sick kit!!!! Great choices as well!
Love it! Can't wait for more.
I remember one of the very double bass songs I ever heard was Judas Rising and after listening to it I fell in love with double bass. Even if I can't play too fast lmao. The fastest song I can play on double bass is Ov Fire and the Void by Behemoth but I still like listening to crazy fast bands especially of the deathcore genre. This class kind of reignited my love for double bass as I haven't played in a while, gonna keep practicing. Thanks for the video!
I loved this. Thank you!
I think you have a great teaching ability
Yo i loved it so much!! 🔥🔥
Thank you!! Great stuff
Perfect timing.
I just started a band as a hobby.
Thank you.
Right on! 🥁
Dude that kit is SICK!!!
Under a glass moon is a great pick - it's the song that got me into Dream Theater!
Excellent lesson really got to lean a lot and I can definitely implement this on my drum set drumeo has the best drum community and the best teachers. Keep rocking 🥁🥁🥁🥁
Thanks so much! 🥁
I just recently purchased a Yamaha stage custom drum set 5 days ago that came with a single bass pedal. I've never played drums before other than playing air drums for as long as I can remember. This past year I started playing Rock Band on drums I can play almost all songs on hard and about 15 on expert. I beat the **** out of that drum set it died 6 days ago. I'll turn 54 this month and for Father's day my son bought me a double bass pedal for my set. ThanQ to all of you at Drumeo you all ROCK
Great job, dude! Excellent lesson
Thanks! 🤘
Super helpful video man! This year I want to get really good at double bass drumming
I thought I'd see Death on this list. Great video! Thanks
I saved this video. I've got a double bass pedal on my Christmas list 🎄. I hope I get it so I can play along with this video
Awesome! I hope Santa drops one off for you 😎
I love this channel. Great video as usual. 🙂😉
Thanks!
Great video. I always love playing under a glass moon! Cant play the whole thing but that beat is awesome!
Great video!!! 🤘👍
I'm a total newb at double bass, so I enjoy nice and easy starting points like this.
Soooo dope! Thanks
Very welcome, Dmitry!
Hearts burst into fire by bullet for my Valentine was the first song I learned on double bass.
Me too I just started a couple months ago
This was helpful. Thank you.
Great video guys. You are posting videos more often now, keep it !
Paradise Lost's "The Enemy" is the perfect song to first learn about triplet double bass. If you want to practice your endurance, go for something like Batushka's "Dziewiatyj czas" or Skogen's "Skuggorna Kalla" (the song, not the album). Both have fairly long, continuous, but slow double bass passages with easy patterns over top.
Rainbow - Kill the King, the instrumental section. Some nice hits and a simple but cool fill.
Literally just finished putting my double pedal back on then seen this
nice video , I can learn ,thank for share
That's a gorgeous drumset
Thanks for the video,, Grttings from Colombia
For me, waking the demon by bullet for my valentine was huge in helping me learn double bass. It's not super slow and it's steady. A good amount of their stuff is like that.
Love playing that song
Super informative! Hard to decide which song to start practicing with, but I loved the groove of "Under The Glass Moon" a lot and tbh Dream Theatre is one of my favorite bands of all time. So I think we are good to go, haha. Thanks for this crazy video.
Great teacher!! More please
Over the hills and far away from Nightwish has a pretty fun and straight forward double bass triplets. It's easier than it looks at first sight
I'd recommend Chevelle - Brainiac. This song has pretty simple but interesting double bass line.
Thanks for the suggestion!
It’s a blast, I highly recommend it!!!
Honestly Chevelles whole catalog is a great starting point for anyone learning double bass
I always played Down With The sickness as a single pedal, didnt even know it was double!
Super surprised overkill by Motörhead isn’t on here. One of the first songs that I learned on double bass
Me to
Cool... Thanks guys
The ending section of “my name is mud” is a pretty easy but the most kickass part of the song
Very cool! old Dream Theater rules!
One song that have a beautiful double bass drum is Cold feet of spark7 with Thomas Lang on drums. Thank you for your very interest lesson.
Conceived Into Emslavement by Fying Fetus is a good start for some double bass!
That setup looks like a good time
Funny, I was actually about to play some double bass practice today for the first time. I had to actually exercise my legs separately for several months before I even wanted to attempt it as an actual practice, my left leg was just way too weak and out of sync with my right, which I worked like ridiculously hard in my early practice days because of that one Eric Moore video on this channel haha
Thanks dude
Glad to see Under a Glass Moon get some love. I was wondering why Drumeo keeps missing that one when talking about double bass.
Cheers Matthew!
Wow! That was really easy! I could play all of those in a about 5 minutes! Up to speed and faster! And now, I'm going into traction...
Mike Portnoy/Mangini throwing in crazy stuff? Shocking... 😂 My double bass struggles lie in consistent notes. I can do ok with broken patterns, but straight eighths are difficult for me to sustain past 3 or 4 bars
I'd recommend Vice Grip- Parkway Drive
It's not too complicated with your hands so you can focus on learning the easy double bass parts!
Also Blue Monday by New Order for building endurance and consistency!
If you're looking for the next step up to these examples, try Doomsday- Architects
daamm this is good.
Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks!
Sooooo gooooood! 😱😱😱😱
Great List! I think Laid To Rest and Pursuit of Vikings are great ones too
Great suggestions Eric!
There are a lot of great songs with not too hard double bass patterns from *Trivium* !
True, great suggestion thanks!
That's a really good video, what in ears are you using?
I really wanna get a second bass drum eventually. I really like how Ginger Baker used his
Red Hot. Nice!
Bad ass 👍
cool video
Very good dable kik👍
I like to play Amon Amarth - Pursuit of the Vikings. Really cool sounding easy beat.
Cristina Aguilera's "Fighter" could be on this list! It has a nice double bass drum
Down with the sickness was one of the first songs I learned that had double bass. Very cool to see it still being taught after all of these years. Great video!
Thanks!
Man great video, I also recommend anything by DAUGHTERS
Sonor kits are just incredible, wish I could afford one. Sonor are almost the same price as DW’s, but are so much better quality and sound wise, imo. Sonor, TAMA, & Ludwig are my 3 favorite drum manufacturers right now as of 2020.
I learned double bass on avenged’s waking the fallen album and all that remains’s album The darkened heart. Both are fun but more beginner double bass which really helped me get ready for avenged’s City of Evil album and all that remains’s The Fall of Ideals album.
Honor thy father by dream theater is a good beginner double bass song
Ill be watching this video again...
When I actually get a double kick 😁
Thank you!! I needed this. Sounds great. Do you know of Alfonso Mocerino ? another great drummer I watch. I prbly dont know of as many super drummers as many here. Please leave suggestions for great vids here👍🥁
You can play "Mechanix" by Megadeth for a faster version of "The Four Horsemen." Great video btw!
More Edgar!!! MORE!!!!!!
Need to play more Pantera drum beats, Vinnie Paul's double bass beats are among the best.
I think the disturbed one was played differently than what was written out. Still a great video!
Tell me about it..I always played that song with a previous cover band with one kick..
You need to do a collab with Yoyoka!❤️
Just got my double bass pedal yesterday (DW 2000) and I’ve found Dissident Aggressor by Slayer (or Judas Priest) has been great to get the hang of keeping a steady rhythm. And telling myself I can play a Slayer song is a nice little ego boost hahaha
I used to practice to King of the Kill by Annihilator, not to fast, steady singles and some cool flairs and details with the hands on top.
Watch anything by Aquiles Priester and you will toss your double pedal into the trash. This guy is an athlete!!
First time I see a drum set up similar to Jimmy Chamberlin drummer from Smashing Pumpkins. You should cover - Geek U.S.A. amazing drums
A kinda easy beat that I like to learn double kick is Puritania from Dimmu Borgir!
I was really hoping for number five to be "Bleed" 😆
Songs on my list right now: Fuel & Bad Seed & Master of Puppets by Metallica, Indestructible by Disturbed, Sweating Bullets by Megadeth, Come Clarity by In Flames.
hansha by oceans ate alaska is a perfect song for beginner drummers to play
I would recommend the verse pattern of Laid To Rest by Lamb of God, to learn triplets
i'd say beast and the harlot, super easy song for beginners. definitely no poly rhythms or a drum solo or any of that
Nacho Scocco doppelganger 🤘🏼
I love Aaron
Thomas Lang or Virgil Donati have many easy beginner double bass songs to start with.
Si bien recuerdo horsemen save con 1 bass :) ojo
I've been getting discouraged while learning Silvera by Gojira. I don't know if it's considered hard, but I kinda manage to get the beats down, it's just that my feet don't move the way I want them to.
