I always suspected, as backstory, that Morbius could not have explored the entire 20 miles square Krell machine on his own, as it would take more than a human lifetime. Robby must have done some exploring, mapping, and cataloging. Did Morbius really visit all the 400 shafts and other areas? And for what purpose? Did Robby find the rooms with the view of the nuclear generators? The jeep idea fits into that imaginative scenario.
